End Of Day 1 Session 3
England continued the fightback. New Zelands bowlers appeared to grow weary and Vaughan was taking good advantage untill he got a little over confident, trying an on drive to a leg cutter, it cost him his wicket. But not before he dragged england back into the game with to vital partnerships, first with strauss and then with thorpe. As the new ball approached England looked to increase the scoring rate and did so. However Collingwood fell 2 overs before the new ball was due, he looked out of sorts after being out of the test team for some time and it showed. A lazy front foot drive resulted in an outside edge which was swallowed up at slip. Thorpe and Flintoff blocke out the remaining overs and saw off some of the new ball. No doubt the first 10-15 overs tomorrow will be crucial. If they can see off the new ball, then Flintoff can look to accelerate. With only Jones and Giles left to come as recognised batters its vital that England at least go for a total round the 300/350 mark. New Zeland can be fairly pleased with their performance today. Im sure if you had offerd them 250ish for 5 at the end of day one they would have taken it. Their top bowlers have been Bond, who was vastly under-used, and Styris. Vettori has yet to bowl, much to the delight of england.
