England's tour of India - 2021

Did any journalist manage to ask Kohli why he categorically said Rohit would open and then suddenly was rested?

Mostly the manager would have asked journalist in prior to not ask such questions.

I think something happened in the dressing room which isn't out in the open.

I predict kohli being rested after a few games and Rohit jumps in to captain. Also, giving india caps to sky and/or kishan

May be Rohit wanted sky to play yesterday and Kohli wanted to go with Iyer which led Rohit to back out from the game?

I don't know, but could be plausible

It was weird that Rohit posed for pictures in the India retro jersey with the likes of Ishan, Saini, Pant, Axar, etc. and suddenly next day, he does not play in the XI. Cant say they planned to throw England off the track, but England is not a team that reacts to such tactics. They have a pretty strong side for T20's that they dont need to care for this.

The mind can just go on a rampage, thinking of all possible conspiracy theories. Well.... hope Rohit gets back to play a crucial role for us in the T20 WC.

Even if this is a well thought out plan there are a lot of issues with it.

1) It's bull sh!t to indulge in such nonsense mind games with world champions when we have issues of our own.

2) Even after the 2019 World Cup we haven't learned our lesson. 4 games left for the world t20 and as usual, experimentation is in full swing. On the other hand, England are simulating the WC by playing the XI and squad they would in the World Cup like it's actually now.

3) Our visionary captain is not some Imran Khan or MS Dhoni who knows his side and will walk into the WC knowing exactly who's meant to do what and when. Before this T20, Rahul had been designated our "wicketkeeper batsman" for the foreseeable future. If you see the last 12-18 months, Rahul has been the best white ball player. Suddenly, he might be out of the side. It just goes to show that there is no consistency, planning or organisation. The wealth of our talent produces the results and two clowns keep adding to their stats and success. I am in no way trying to show any sympathy for Rahul. These days, you get to see your favourite player enough thanks to the IPL and other leagues. I care less if Rahul and Rohit make 5 ducks in this series. They deserve to and should be our openers in the WC with Pant taking the gloves.

I suspect that today Navdeep Saini will play in an attempt to copy the English. This "aggressive" intent is good but the more I look at T20 cricket these days, the more I am assured that you just play as per the merit of the ball for the power play. From there, you can just plan your target that you want to set and go about it.

England's mantra works because of their depth and power but make no mistake, they are themselves vulnerable to being bowled out for 120 going for 200 on a 160 track and getting knocked out in a World Cup. No team is perfect.

I feel that instead of copying other's style and play, we just need to refine our own way. I am convinced that India has the best bowling attack in the world at the moment in limited overs cricket. I think Rohit and Rahul should be left alone at the top uncluttered. They'll find a way. Kohli just needs to play the merits. It's what took him to the top and if he plays as per the merit of a ball without premeditating I am dead certain he can match the best in the world. For example, Kohli is capable of going 180-200 on a flat track and capable of 120-130 on a tough track but a lot of "big hitters" will not be able to make runs on a 120-130 track like he can. The problem is in his head.

Captaincy and team selection aside. Wouldn't it be a good idea to rest Rohit & Rahul just to make the side realise the importance of other players in the line-up? This gives players in the middle order an opportunity to handle pressure and give out their best and in turn feel confident about themselves. I feel any sane Captain wouldn't want to go without Rohit, Rahul or Pant since these are the players who make Indian batting line-up destructive in this format. Not too sure to what extent Kohli fits in that sane category but how much would you buy the idea of resting your key players for a bilateral before an ICC tournament to give opportunities to the players who are going to be the part of playing XI in the World T20 along with the backups who are not getting enough match exposure?

I wanted to agree to this statement but then there are few issues that pop out which I would like list below
  1. Bumrah hasn't got wickets for a considerable time in white ball Cricket
  2. Bhuvi hasn't played for a while
  3. Lack of clarity on Hardik's bowling
  4. Chahal have been inconsistent for a while now
  5. Kuldeep in limited opportunities haven't performed well
  6. Shami leaks runs like anything
  7. Natarajan is struggling with fitness for quite a while now
  8. Shardul struggles to handle pressure when he is taken on the attack
  9. Saini is struggling with his lengths and so as Siraj
  10. Umesh looks completely ineffective and worn out
  11. In terms of bowling average and economy India has been really very average since the start of 2019 when it comes to limited overs Cricket.

I just had a look and was surprised how expensive Chahal is. He has a similar strike rate to Adil Rashid (since the World Cup) but is more than 1 run per over more expensive. Almost 1.5 runs per over more expensive than him in T20s.

Interestingly, in T20Is between the two sides if you picked the two most economical bowlers, the two with the best average and the two with the best strike rate you'd only get one Englishman. (Jadeja, Bumrah, Saini, Chahar, Thakur, Stokes)

If Kohli is so benevolent to care about all of this, the first person to be rested would be himself. Except the only times he misses out on games is when it is announced well before or is a defined period such as an entire series or tournament.

I get that the nature of the captaincy job and being a high profile player means that it isn't as easy for him to rest himself but I've never seen him make an attempt either. I can't count the number of times where he has played utterly meaningless games and dead rubbers, all in his favoured position (with the exception of a small fancy with the number four role, only because he wanted to do it himself even with many disagreeing) whilst players who are supposed to play are suddenly dropped or subjected to an alternate change of plans.

I'm inclined to disagree with you here. It sounds like you're nitpicking on any off-day or a lean patch these bowlers went through. When you adjudge whether "India has the best bowling attack in LO's", it doesn't just refer to the form of these bowlers, but the resources that the team has to pick from. And that too, which is rich with variety that makes India's bowling attack one of the best in the world given the talents you can exploit to win a game of cricket. And if you were to look at any other team in the same regard, you could make many of the same arguments (eg. Moeen Ali has been inconsistent with bat and ball for England in LO's, or Starc looking ineffective or Hazlewood getting very limited opportunities in LO). But, at the end of the day these guys are considered world class players who can win games for their team.

Also, more often than not even when Bumrah was going through a lean patch and Bhuvi was out for so long, so many other players have stepped up too. Chahar picked up 6 for 7 in a T20 game, Sundar has kept it tight, Saini has impressed with his pace at times and Shami had one of the best strike rates in WC19. Nattu did really well in his debut series against Australia a few months ago as well. I can't think of any other team that has got these resources in check, although Australia and England have formidable attacks in LO's as well.

I should've specified Kohli included. :p
