Well I agree that we did not reach a score that would be defendable but we atleast reached a score. Jadeja definitely could be our solution if not Iyer in the team. However, Iyer has to be in our ODI lineup.
Oh trust me, I've always wanted him in the ODI lineup since 2018. It was very obvious that he had the perfect skill for the number four role with his ability to rotate strike, take on the spinners and keep the momentum going. Instead he was unfairly discarded after one tour of South Africa that did not have the best surfaces for batting.
And this is the reason why Buttler should be an opener. He gets his boundaries in the powerplay with fearless and aggressive strokes, rotates strike and punishes the few bad balls in the middle overs and then gears up for a big finish. Deprive him of that essential powerplay phase and he suddenly looks no better than your standard accumulator who might go on to have the odd big innings.
And this is also why I believe Kohli works best as an opener. Imagine a few extra boundaries that he could have got at the start to really polish off that total. Players like him work best as the opener.
I think Buttler plays the situation. I would never ever waste him as an opener. Bairstow is a quality opener and when you look at it from a team perspective, he is invaluable lower down the order. I am not saying he's not an opener, it's just that the team needs him more as a finisher.
The only other batsman who I feel is as destructive as Jos is AB!!
Always felt like a regression to the mean was inevitable with Malan. I don't think he'll be as bad as his domestic stats, something just seems to click for him in the English setup.

He's a good player and very experienced. He should really have had a chance in the T20 squad at least 5 years before his debut. These are his first international matches outside of SENA countries. He could do with getting a good run the IPL rather than ending up on the bench like a lot of English players do.
If Malan doesn't get a decent score in this series, this could put pressure on his place. Sure his T20I numbers are superb and he's ranked the #1 T20 batsman in the world, but if he can't play spin well Root will be seen as the better option at 3 and his off-spin gives him the edge. Still think Malan will be given the nod for the WT20, he's got the next two games and an IPL season to conjure some scores of note that prove he can play on Indian pitches.
By the way, why is Deepak Chahar sitting in the reserves while Shardul is playing? If Shardul aint gonna get batting chance, would rather play Deepak Chahar who is a better PP bowler than Shardul. Chahar does this job for CSK and can do it here too.

An opener for me is the most valuable player in a T20 game. The powerplay is the only part of a T20 where the bowlers are completely helpless given the lack of real bite with the new ball in this format. When they fire, most games can be decided by them on their own. I personally don't see Buttler being wasted as an opener in such a scenario when he clearly is England's best T20 batsman.
In addition, Buttler is really not a good finisher or middle order player in T20s and the sample size for that is significant enough to take into consideration. Watching him play also makes it obvious, the powerplay allows him to not play cautiously and target all areas of the ground with his range of shots.
Bairstow himself is not poor down the order too. He is extremely good versus spin and has a weakness versus the early swing that is both technical and mental. It just makes too much sense to play Buttler as the opener and Bairstow at four or five IMO.
As for Jos and AbD.. I still feel that you could tie down the former on his day with clever plans and good skill. I've never felt that would be possible with AbD on his day, he simply is too good and creative in addition to him also being the better player. Truly one of a kind.

The fast bowler who should be playing on these tracks is Saini. Neither Chahar and certainly not Thakur. Thakur should never have a white ball in his hand.
In Bengal, bowlers like him are given an adjective i.e "Maal"

I assume that they see him and Bhuvi being too similar which is why they haven't played him yet.
I think it was Stuart Broad who made the point today: Buttler at 4-6 might have the chance to win 2 matches out of 10. Opening he has the chance to win 10 out 10.
I feel Sundar could get Buttler out in the Powerplay itself. Buttler looked tentative against him when he failed to get any room to open his arms. And since it is a Powerplay the pressure could mount on him like anything if he is kept quite somehow. We could've been more competitive if Sundar bowled in the first 8-10 overs.
