One common thing I think that I've seem up over the years is often people choose to support a team only because of their striker, like you see with shravi. That's definitely a common way to 'choose' a team I guess.

I myself watched football for a few years before choosing Arsenal. Had to support them for their style of play, I just started watching them a lot more than other teams and before I knew it I was watching every single game of theirs. I'm pretty sure I was almost a Utd fan though, back when I was first getting into football, it was pretty much the only team I knew (another reason I think people support Utd). I just didn't like their system at all and didn't enjoy watching them very much, Arsenal on the other hand... The opposite.

The global popularity of both Wayne Rooney and David Beckham I think has a lot to do with the number of Utd fans. They know of no other players, so support Utd.

What's it like in other parts of the world? Here we have about 70% Man Utd fans, 20% Liverpool, 5% Arsenal and 5% Chelsea and Man City. A lot of the glory hunters are moving on from Liverpool now though, a mate who used to be a Liverpool fan 'supports' Everton now:facepalm.

It wasn't why I 'chose' Liverpool though. It's just what attracted me to them. I hadn't 'chosen' a team yet at that point, and wasn't a fan of Liverpool by any means. But I did become one as I started watching more of Liverpool's games, which eventually led me to support them.

i live in liverpool and it's a fairly even split for everton and liverpool between actual fans of football. liverpool have a huge edge in the people who don't actually care or like football though.

and there are very few people who support anyone else. get the odd tranmere fan and people who come here for university/work who support other teams.

I know, that's what I meant, having a great iconic forward is what attracts fans, obviously someone isn't going to support Crystal Palace for example only because they have Zaha.

So, but for some light blue, you could've easily been a Swan? :)

You said that City these days make you cringe - what was your reaction when the takeover was announced? Mine was probably 'it had to be City, didn't it'? Followed by 'nothing'll come of it' - that was a bit wide of the mark...

Yeah lol, Swansea will always have a special place in my heart, they represent everything that I wish City could be, 5% Swan for life. :p

Well, tbh with you I wasn't actually around for the whole takeover(only really got into footy after the 2010 CL and the 2010 WC), but I tell you what man, sometimes I genuinely wish the owners would've went about it the 'right' way... Like I'm grateful for what they've done for the club and the city in general, but just pumping ?500m into a team is something that I will never 'support'. With that said, I'm not totally unhappy with them, they've put quite a bit into the Youth system and hopefully(fingers crossed) we'll see the effects of that in the near future.

I have a dream that one day this club will rise up and put out a 100% homegrown XI, for the good of Football and the good of England! I have a dream...

Corny, I know. :p

My reason was Michael Owen. Needless to say I was distraught when he left. I didn't know much about football and didn't watch very much, but Owen was the reason I began supporting Liverpool.

Yeah that would be my story as well....

And I actually feel guilty of being a hypocrite for NOT portraying any signs of hatred or ill-feelings towards Owen right until this moment (I even tweeted him begging him to join us as a free agent earlier this summer!), in spite having played for Liverpool's biggest rivals, Man United. And yet I continually slate my then third favorite footballer in Fernando Torres for transferring to a rival club in Chelsea, and now he happens to be one of my most hated footballers!

I probably mind these glory hunters less than the annoying mugs that happen to live within spitting distance of old trafford and spend every waking moment boasting that they support manchester united more legitimately than anyone else.

Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini spark war of words - ESPN FC

Two standout quotes from Roberto Mancini from that article:

"I remember very well last year. When Young was swimming in the ... " he said, gesturing like a swimmer diving into the water.

And more sarcasm from Roberto:

"I think in the last 15 years there have been some penalties for them. Not a lot, but two or three in the last 15 years."

I thought everyone who lived in Manchester was a City fan.

Ha well having grown up in manchester, i'd say its 60-65% city fans & about 30-35 % united fans. You get alot a united fans from other area's of the country coming up to old trafford on match day i recall.

Shelvey as a false nine tomorrow. Sometimes, I fear that Rodgers thinks he's some sort of messiah of football and does things differently just because he thinks he's special or because he thinks he's changing the game. For example, when both Enrique and Downing are playing, why would you play Enrique on the wing and Downing at left-back? I understand giving both of them a chance in those positions, but it doesn't make much sense when they're both in the XI.
