Your Cricket Fast Bowling Thread

I'm 6'1", I think I could get up near to that pace if required. Though, my runup is 11 paces of pure sprinting and my length is usually overpitched and in the end I think it's easier for the batsman facing.

By the sounds of things this evertonfan sounds sort of like a guy in my club team who gets allot of pace on the bowl.

Ok cool, would you give any tips for aspiring fast bowlers?

Some advice is that if you are tall make the most of it.... have a high action as there no point being tall and being a low and skiddy bowler. I have a veyr high action i go both my arms as high as possbile and get a lot of bounce... ask that purple blob on hondeyhos arm :p.

Well I couldn't really give any advice that i haven't said previously but i'll give it a go;

1. It's NOT just pace that you need; Pace is handy to have but accuracy is far more important. Take a look at Mohammad Sami, he has pace but doesn't know to use it properly which is why he has an average of over 40.

2.Slower balls are important; As I said at teh start of the thread, as long as your bouncers and yorkers, you need a slower ball to keep the batsman guessing.

3.Keep fit; It really is important to be fit as a fast bowler and if you want to gain some short term fitness I suggest putting 2 cones 22 yards apart from each other and running back and forth at full pelt for about 2-3 minutes.

Sorry for sounding cheesy but you asked. :p

perhaps match fitness? one of the english commentators made the comment that no matter how much cardio you do, you will only get match-fit by playing matches

I don't see what the difference would be.

running in a circle lines whatever won't prepare you for what its like in a game.

Yes, because with match practice. Adrenilin is running through your body so you work harder and can push yourself more. Also, cricket is a very strange mix of start and stop physical activities.

It is important to have good stomach and leg muscles in order to support the fast motion in your back. A lot of good players (like myself :p ) come undone from stress fractures in the back due to an excess load of pressure being placed on the back. Although it seems like a waste of time, you should always do back stretches before bowling fast as it is crucial to whether you will be able to last the distance as a fast bowler. If this isnt done it could also have some ramifications on your normal everyday life, stress fractures on the back could occur doing every day things due to cricket wearing you down. Just remember, if you want to bowl fast, you have to have the body to support the speed.

How important are the knee and thigh muscles because I am doing lots of stretches for them (my physio told me to), and I do 3 sets knee stretches which stretch them well and two sets of thigh stretches...by the summer they will be very well toned hopefully.

Will this help my fast bowling?

Well i'd say that depends if you have a big leap in your delivery stride. If you do have a big leap, then yes, what your doing will help you but if your a tight to the stumps bowler like myself, then it isn't that important because a big powerful leap isn't needed much.

extremely important, its all about your body being able to support the motions. When you think about it, your knee and thigh would probably be in the most stressed positions, like when your front leg hits the crease, you would need to have a strong body to support it. Will it help your fast bowling though, your bowling wont improve, but you wear and tear on your body will reduce, which in the long run arguably is improving your body.
