Generation Draft - COMPLETED!!

Possibly a good move to grab that keeper. Quite a few of us are still yet to pick one.

And geez that Joey Palmer must have been quite a player - hands up who didn't try to pick him this round? :D I think most people went for bowlers in these old timers rounds. I guess it's understandable, the bowling stats from that time do look pretty good.

Oh and just in case anyone's forgotten - and I kinda did... - 2 left handers/armers are required in your XI. I currently have zero :( I'd say most of you are OK thus far, but there's probably a couple like me who haven't been thinking about it thus far.

Crew of Black to finish off this round, and then Swacker to start round 5. In fact Swacker if you're on, just make your picks I say, you shouldn't have to wait. Plenty of good players still out there from where I'm sitting :thumbs

And for those that haven't been writing about their picks - get on it. Otherwise I'll assume you just trawled those statguru links and didn't even read about your players :p

Already got my 2 lefties- Johnny Briggs and Adam Gilchrist. Didn't even realize it.

Here are my picks.

Arthur Shrewsbury

A batsman to rival W G Grace both in skill and average, Shrewbury was an accomplished batsman, who when Grace was asked to choose a player he would most like in his side, he simply said Arthur. A big reason for selection in my XI is his ability to bat on what were deemed unplayable pitches. A great example of this is his highest score of 164 at Lords, where he got a hundred on a pitch deemed "impossible" to bat on. In regards to his selection in my XI, with his cricketing mindset, if he were to play today especially with the standard modern skill set, he would be a nightmare to get out. His ability to grind out and score even on the infamous sticky wickets, he would provide even more steel to my top order to deal with the best bowlers in the history of the game.

My next pick is

Bill O'Reilly

Considered one part of "the trinity" of great Australian Wrist Spinners with Grimmett and Warne, Bill "Tiger" O'Reilly was an unorthodox bowler who delivered wrist spin at times at a brisk medium pace, in a flailing fashion with a seemingly unorthodox seam bowlers grip. One could easily say presume he was a wannabe paceman who just didn't have the pace, however it was purposeful and highly regard, especially by Bradman who considered him the finest and therefore, presumably, the most testing bowler he played against, an accolade backed up by Compton and Hutton, with the later stating he would be the first person he selected in his personal XI. His partnership with Grimmett provided a great plethora of wickets, that became the greatest spin bowling partnership ever. This partnership is the basis for my selection, who would presumably be bowling with a better partner in Warne, add to the fact that O'Reilly could get up to that medium pace, he sits in there as a hybrid third paceman of sorts, which provides a real ace up the sleeve, that would work well with an of my bowling attack.

I've got my left handed players in Andy Flower and Colin Blythe as well. But, top 3 out of the remaining rounds looks pretty difficult to get.

Bill O'Reilly's excellent value for an end of round pick. He was my 2nd choice if Alec Bedser had already been taken. That's a fairly awesome bowling lineup you have there :thumbs

And I'm glad someone took Rod Marsh - that takes away one option of how I was going to get my keeper and left handers.

Nice picks guys. And thanks Jason for keeping things running. If you want, we can both keep editing the first post whenever each of us is online. Makes things run a lot smoother :) And I see that there are quite a few write-ups that need doing (*cough swacker, AP, send2yaari *cough). Come on guys, this as much a selection exercise as it is about learning the history of the game. Like I said before, they don't have to be long-worded essays. Just 2 sentences explaing why you chose a certain player is enough.

Great pick in Shrewsbury Crew :thumbs I was really tempted to pick him, but his stats as an opener weren't that great. And that is a brilliant attack. You've got 2 brilliant fast bowlers - one the greatest of his generation, the other greatest his country's ever produced, and 2 of the most profilic leggies in history. And that's what I'm missing, a good leggie. Don't think I'll get one either, as I've got some specific names in mind for the up-coming round to balance my team out.

And yeah, forgot to remind people, you need atleast 2 left-handers. Got about 3 so far, and if I get the picks I want, there will be a few more in there.

Yah that's cool.

And I think I know one of the guys who you're targetting this round Papa - there's a perfect spot left for him in your XI ;)

I was thinking of picking him. I still am, but have recently started to lean towards someone else. Plus, I've already got a few quality left-handers. Could be greedy though.

Billie Barnes.
058362.player.jpg

He was a Brilliant Fast Medium bowler as well as a more than handy batsman down the order. If conditions were apt he was deadly to say the least. Australia tasted that on two separate occasions. Once he took 6/31 and a couple of years later he took 6/28 in a match which England managed to win even after getting bowled out for 45. With the bat his finest innings ought to be the first test match in Adelaide where he scored 134 in a rain struck match. After he retired he became owner of a pub. That was probably the biggest factor for his inclusion in my team :p

Eddie Paynter.
21520.player.jpg

I think he'll always be remembered for his bradmanesque average in his first 7 test matches where he avg 84.42 vs Australia. He finished with a remarkable average of almost 60. He was one of the most gutsy player ever to play for England. In 1932-33, in the fourth Test at Brisbane, he was taken to hospital with tonsillitis and doubtless, had all gone well with England, would not have batted. But all did not go well, and at 216 for 6 he emerged from the pavilion, refused Woodfull's offer of a runner, was still there at the close, and returned to bed in hospital. Next morning, he was not out until he had scored 83 in nearly four hours. On this occasion he and Verity put on 92 for the ninth wicket. Normally quick on his feet and a fine driver, he had conserved energy by waiting for opportunities to hit the ball to leg, preferably to the boundary. Few innings in history have so captivated the imagination of the public. Moreover, Paynter insisted on fielding for a couple of hours before retiring and then, as if to show that he was none the worse, in a brief second innings he finished the match with a 6.

Good write-ups. I wouldn't worry about the fast bowlers - there's plenty in this round, and you're next after Aditya anyway :p

Isnt there a typo in first page? It says this round is 1971-1900

Damn... I have a pretty long tail and my top order is shaping up nicely too.... And i have two lefties too ;) :p

----------

What i need now is a Genuine fast bowler as i already have two Fast medium bowlers and 2 different type of spinners. So that sums up variety for the attack. Then i'll need a keeper to play at 6 and a decent opener and number 3 player.
