IGN preview for Don Bradman 14 (Looks cool)

Unfortunately a game like NBA 2k14 comes along with their next-gen graphics, and you get kids thinking that all games should look like that.

There's just no pleasing some people..

Pitty we couldn't have these previewers using the PC version and being able to capture 1080p video to post online.. just look at the hot spot demo from ages ago.. the one 'animation' is as smooth as fresh butter, crystal clean and spot on in every regards.

What's astounding is the folks don't even look at the main aspects of the game, i.e. gameplay and the longevity due to customizations, i.e. CA. Panning a game, especially a sports based game, purely on the basis of graphics has to be insane. Surely gameplay is the king and without gameplay, graphics and licenses are as useless as tits on a bull.

See: NBA Live/Elite for the last 5 years (but then again, they lost the plot visually too)

Actually the graphics is by no means shit, its on par with most games out there except the EA sponsored FIfa,NBA,madden, MLB. Anymore with the complexity of Cricket i would think the current gen will have issues with frame rate.

Maybe we can still do our part and just paste the link to the Planet Cricket videos page and tell them what to expect if they get the game on PC version..

Looking at those videos makes me a sad panda again at having to wait 2 months to play it on PC..

Umm...EA haven't made a baseball game in nearly 10 years, and NBA Live 14 is a next gen exclusive (which DBC14 arguably looks better than).

Yup, 2K Sports is not making MLB game this year, and MLB The Show is a Sony title exclusive to PS3/PS4.

The problem isn't the models, its often the animation and melding them together as Ross said above. Its a very hard thing to do; and the big reason why you shouldn't say that a game looks nice based on pictures - Ashes Cricket 2013 never looked good, but as soon as we got the first post-release videos we saw how bad it did look (yes; I'm counting the horrible animation messes in AC13 as graphics because that's what they are). It (and also trying to have the ball be its own thing in Football/Basketball type things) is the hardest part of coding sports games, and the attitude of past games has been "fish that, canned animations for everything" which is a big reason why they've been awful.

Gameplay and the more technical side of the graphics go hand in hand in cricket though. You need to have the animations there in order for the fancy ball physics required for a good game to work. There are certainly some games (JRPGs and adventure stuff IMO) where graphics certainly should take a back seat; but for sports titles they are important; not because of the models but because the animations you create directly work with the physics of the objects in the game and without one you wouldn't have the other. The reason why other cricket games have played bad is because they never addressed this problem of dealing with animations and instead pre canned stuff letting the ball leap into the middle of the bat if the right timing window is activated. The animation problem is certainly not a unique thing to DBC; Madden has been in development for countless years and there are lots of moments where it looks downright ugly because of the animations. The problem is that Mr NoNothingAboutGameDesign doesn't understand this and thinks "this looks worse than NBA; I'm not buying this"

People are noticing the genuinely good things in the game; the fact that the ball seems to be its own thing acting properly; the game and control mechanics and other similar things. And hey; its nice that the one bad things that's been noticed is being worked on; and its something that no one has solved yet!

I think the video quality on the ign one was poor on the ign website but it looks much better on their youtube has nearly 20k views already for a cricket game that's impressive.

* Apart from the Yanks trying to compare cricket to baseball... -_-

Glad to see real names and the game looks fantastic on screen, that too with a low budget compared to giants like GTA.

Isn't NBA Live 14 further proof of the importance of graphical elements in sports games though; the reviews of it pretty much said that it felt a lot less fluid and a lot more fixed and artificial than 2ks game; and a lot of that would be because of the lack of animations for some things making things that you'd want to do in real basketball impossible...
