India Team Discussion

Is Ashwin better than Chahal/Kuldeep in ODIs?
No. But Ashwin is better than Sundar in every format. Sundar is part of the Indian T20 team but Ashwin isn't.

Sundar is a better batsman*
He has not done anything with the bat in T20I and IPL so far.

Does he deserve to be in the Indian team? On what basis was he selected in the Indian team?

His performance in the IPL has been ordinary.

In T20I
SundarKuldeep

Wickets2541

How is he still playing in the Indian team with this ordinary performance? Kuldeep's place is not fixed in the T20 team but Sundar will definitely play in the ICC WT20. Why? RCB Quota?

This was Virat's reply when a reporter asked about Ashwin's comeback in limited-over format.
"Washington has been doing really well for us. So you cannot have two players of the same discipline, playing in one spot. So (this will not happen) unless Washy has a drastically horrible season and things go south for him"

Maybe the Indian team wants to keep Ashwin fresh for the longer format of the game? We never know what goes behind the scene. He may be having some issues that we are not aware. So it could be the fact that they don't want him to breakdown in middle of a tour like he did on our England & Australia tour in 2018-19.

The one big thing that tilts things in complete favor for Sundar in the T20I format, is FITNESS! Ashwin's fitness is barely sufficient for test cricket. ODI moves at 5x speed and T20 moves at 20x speed. When the game moves that fast, importance of fitness becomes more crucial. Even if Sundar doesn't spin the ball as much as Ashwin or if his batting is just as good as Ashwin, Sundar will be preferred purely for his fitness/agility/mobility.

Unless Ashwin goes back to the drawing board and dramatically improves his physique and dramatically changes his mobility/agility, his limited overs career is likely to stay in a limbo until he calls it a day! And this is coming from someone who admires Ashwin for the most part!

I hope this isn't true. The last thing Indian cricket needs is another 'YES' man who has no say whatsoever. If Vikram Rathour becomes Head Coach, scores of 36, 78 will be quite normal for this side and they will make every effort to proudly defend this in press conferences.

Sundar is not fit and if he hasn't been considered, then he's out for the long haul. You definitely need an off spinner or someone that takes the ball away from the left hander which has been a big weakness with India with them playing Jadeja and Chahal. I for one like this selection only if Sundar isn't fit.

I don't get the Axar Patel selection and I would have definitely picked another quick instead. I don't care what sort of form Pandya and Jadeja are in but they play all games unless unfit. Axar should have been in the reserves. Ishan Kishan is a brilliant selection because he can basically do anything. Open, middle order or keep. I think Thakur should have been in the squad.

UAE and MSD! Our chances just improved vastly!

Has Pandya been cleared to bowl regularly now?

They are a fast bowler short if you consider Pandya will bowl. If he isn't bowling, then we are 1.5 quicks short.

For mine, Pandya doesn't make the XI if he doesn't bowl. I'll pick Ishan Kishan over him.

I think it's a fantastic decision to pick Ashwin. I really hope he isn't used as poorly as Sundar was. I don't see Jadeja and Axar playing any games together so I just don't get his selection. The thing is, Varun Chakravarthy and Ashwin won't play together either and that's why I feel 5 spinners is real overkill. What I think should happen is Chakravarthy should not play any games other than knockouts and the Pakistan game. This dual selection would make some sort of sense then but we are still a quick short. I would have 100% included both Thakur and Chahar to be honest. Humidity levels can reach ridiculous proportions in the Emirates and Chahar can run through sides in the first 6. He's one of the rare chaps that can hoop it around even in a T20 and he could alternate with Shami depending on conditions. If our batting really suffers, then a 6/7/8 combo of Pandya, Jadeja and Thakur isn't beyond the realms of understanding.

Overall though, a good side has been picked. Overkill of spin but it will be dry and the tracks will be worn and torn by the time fun and games begin. One of Varun/Ashwin for Chahar and Thakur for Axar would have been my side.

My thoughts on the team:

This team is imbalanced. I personally feel we have no chance of lifting the Cup. Forget the Cup, am a 100% sure that our team will mark its first ever loss vs Pakistan in a World Cup this time round.

1. Batting

With only 4 frontline batsmen, its going to be a challenge. I would have liked 2 more batsmen in the squad just to give extra depth. Iyer, who is a part of the reserves ought to have been in the main team.

2. Keeping

3 keepers! Reminds me of CWC19 where we had 4 in the team and all of them played. KLR has been the main one in LOIs of late. I thought our strategy was to continue with him in that position as it opens up a slot for a batsman/all-rounder. Clearly, this isnt the thinking. So, if Pant is your numero uno keeper, why select another backup in Kishan ,who has limited India exposure?

3. Spinners

Wow! Take a bow Virat and the selection committee! Take a bow! 5 F&***** spinners. Prepared to bet that Ashwin and Varun won;t get a game at all.

4. Fast Bowlers
Shardul and Chahar-notable exclusions. Especially wherein Hardik isn't bowling/hasn't bowled recently.

5. Mentor
Why does this team need a mentor? Are we a minnow like Bangladesh or so? Plus, what has MSD done that makes him so worthy. He single handedly screwed up the last CWC campaign for us. The audacity to appoint him as mentor, when you have a full support staff at your disposal really baffles me

Well fearsome tweak after the Tests in England are over , cricket won't be any fun anymore too much junk to consume IPL & WC.

So good luck to the folks.

The win record against Pakistan is the most overrated codswallop. I would gladly lose to them if it means winning the cup or losing both. One day we will lose to them. It's just life. People on both ends of the border are similar so I get the lust for stats. India is a better team regardless of that result and I had said the same thing after the CT final as well.

You can only select 15 and almost every batter who should have made the 18 has barring Dhawan and it was very clear that it would come down to him or Kishan and they have taken the more flexible option. I feel the decision with the batters is bang on.

England play 3/4 keepers in the same side and dominate white ball cricket. If someone is making the cut on the basis of their batting skill then it makes 0 sense to deny them a spot in the team just because they have an added skill i.e wicketkeeping.

I also feel spin is an overkill and it's a small error which can be rectified or we might be wrong? As for the mentor part- It's below my dignity to comment.
