India Team Discussion

Anyone else here feels that Laxman should be with the T20 setup?

He has been with the sunrisers setup for no. of years and recenty won the U19 WC as well.

Might be better for Dravid to focus & rebuild the team for Tests which I feel is in the transition phase.

I feel he shouldn't be with the team at all. While he has mentored SRH, the results haven't been spectacular. We all know Laxman was sidelined into the NCA as they didn't have options and also that VVS wanted the India coaching role. Without having credentials, its really tough to hand it over to him. The U19 win is wrongly credited to Laxman seeing as VVS only turned up during the business end of the tournament. The main work there was done by Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Munish Bali.

I like the theory of splitting coaching roles. However, Dravid needs to be Director of Cricket and needs to have the actual coaches reporting to him. BCCI can definitely spend in getting the likes of say a Trevor Bayliss/ Moody or even Langer(Tests) in to the setup.

Thank you so much @Bevab for your post. You put forward everything what I wanted to explain but was just not been able to comprehend it well into a post.

@PresidentEvil , those were the exact points I was trying to put forward. And apologies if I misunderstood your post.

Yeah, Bevab summed it up very nicely.

So we finally have a version 2 (15 for now)-
  1. Rohit Sharma :c::bat:
  2. KL Rahul v/:c: :bat:/:wkb:
  3. Virat Kohli :bat:
  4. Suryakumar Yadav :bat:
  5. Hardik Pandya :ar: (will be the 6th bowler)
  6. Ravindra Jadeja :ar: (2nd spinner and 5th bowler)
  7. Dinesh Karthik :wkb: (will mostly bat ahead of Jadeja unless there are more than 6-7 overs remaining)
  8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar :bwl:
  9. Mohammed Shami :bwl:
  10. Jasprit Bumrah :bwl:
  11. Yuzvendra Chahal :bwl:
Back-Ups

Ishan Kishan :bat:/:wkb: (Opener)
Kuldeep Yadav :bwl:
Deepak Chahar :bwl:
Rishabh Pant :wkb:

This is pretty much the squad we had for our last T20 WC with just DK's addition and couple of role changes.

Reserves:
Sanju Samson :bat:/:wkb:
Washington Sundar :ar:
Harshal Patel :bwl:
Ok time for Version 3!!!!

Openers
Rohit Sharma :c: :blueo:
KL Rahul v/:c: :redo:

Middle Order
Virat Kohli :redo:
Suryakumar Yadav :blueo:
Deepak Hooda :purpo:

Wicket Keepers
Rishabh Pant :redo:
Ishan Kishan :redo:
Dinesh Karthik :redo:

All-rounders
Hardik Pandya :blueo:
Ravindra Jadeja :blueo:

Bowlers
Harshal Patel :blueo:
Bhuvneshwar Kumar :blueo:
Jasprit Bumrah :blueo:
Yuzvendra Chahal :blueo:
Ravi Bishnoi :purpo:

Reserves
Axar Patel :ar:
Sanju Samson :wkb:

:blueo: - Confirmed
:redo: - Will most likely make the squad
:purpo: - Might miss out

  • Rohit Sharma is going to lead the side and plus his experience is going to be crucial so he is confirmed
  • Suryakumar Yadav's century in the last game makes him undropable now
  • Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya are the only genuine all-rounders we have right now so can't keep them out
  • Bhuvi-Bumrah pair should be our best bet both with the new ball and at the death
  • Chahal has not done too badly and is possibly the best spinner in the country as far as limited overs Cricket is concerned
  • I had my concerns with Harshal Patel before the recent England series, but he just proved himself that he can bowl on these hard surfaces. So that earns him rhe place
  • I can see what Kohli was trying to do in last 2 games and I would say let us be a little more patient with him and see what happens.
  • I believe India would try and look to have a like for like for SKY in the 15 itself and they have probably Shreyas Iyer in their plans and hence it looks tough for Hooda to make the 15
  • I hope Kuldeep Yadav gets some more games and if he does look to be more effective than Bishnoi, he must get a go.
  • KL Rahul has been injured for a while and all it depends upon is his availability if he misses out Sanju Samson should be the right choice considering his fearless power hitting prowess in the Powerplay.
Even though I was rooting for Shami, but he has not played for India for a while. With Harshal Patel performing well in England, he has made things difficult for Shami.

I would end this post with a more likely playing XI

  1. :bat:Rohit Sharma :c:
  2. :wkb: KL Rahul
  3. :bat: Virat Kohli
  4. :bat: Suryakumar Yadav
  5. :ar: Hardik Pandya
  6. :ar: Ravindra Jadeja
  7. :wkb: Dinesh Karthik :wk:
  8. :bwl: Harshal Patel
  9. :bwl: Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  10. :bwl: Jasprit Bumrah
  11. :bwl: Yuzvendra Chahal

I don't understand this! Shami hasn't played for a while. Hence, he misses out!

Has KLR played? No! then why n earth should he walk into the side? Based on reputation alone? I'd still go to the WT20 without KLR and Kohli. With these two stat-padders in the side, the Indian team will face the same concerns as they used to in previous editions. Samson has proven that he is more than a handful in such cases.

Wicket Keepers
Rishabh Pant :redo:
Ishan Kishan :redo:
Dinesh Karthik :redo:

3!

If you consider KLR at the top, then it becomes 4! Not another repeat of the 2019 CWC. Ideally, you do not need Pant-given the mannerism of his play. Kishan is similar in that respect. However, with proven credentials at the top, my pick would be him. The ideal one to replace KLR. A slightly off-field selection could be Prithvi Shaw- he is another Sehwag-esque player who can get you off to fliers without a care in the world.

DK is my 1st choice as far as keeping goes for the WT20. Hard to see a side without him in it.

When I look for openers, I generally look for an opening pair. And I guess the Rohit-KLR combo is a settled pair and they both get India off to good starts in T20Is. So my bet would be KLR despite his underwhelming individual stats.

These are the opening pairs of India in T20Is that have played since the end of 2019 ODI World Cup. These numbers clearly show the impact Rohit & KLR have created at the top.

The BCCI must enforce the current crop of players to play at least 2 domestic 4 day games+ 3 Limited over games.
Wasn't there something like this during Kumble the coach era? Something along of lines of playing domestic cricket (if you've been out of team due to injury) to be considered again for selection? I remember reading that the players weren't a fan of this approach.

It certainly was. And that's the way it ought be as opposed to people simply walking into the team.

Can’t have Dhoni there. Because we might then accidentally win.
