India Team Discussion

I don’t like Thakur being a part of our T20I squad or even the ODI squad these days. It feels like his batting has regressed and his bowling has always been hit or miss.

What is the future of Ashwin in the T20I team? He was out of the limited over setup for four years and suddenly got selected for the WT20 2021. Since then, he has taken 12 wickets in 7 matches.

I think he hasn't put a foot wrong ever since his stint with the Delhi Capitals. He has been very accurate and hardly concedes runs. His height will give him a good advantage because of the bounce in Australian pitches. But now the question comes is would you keep Chahal out for him?

My answer would be a NO! We haven't played Kuldeep Yadav for a while now and Bishnoi is still too young. With every other team having atleast 1 leg-spinner Chahal over Ashwin makes sense.

Statistically Ashwin have done better but Chahal have got wickets in crucial stages of the game.

Since when has Dhawan been fluent in T20Is? The bloke can barely score in the mid 120s on half of his days. Rahul at the least strikes in the mid 130s on an decent day.

I should have been a bit more articulate there. Dhawan's ODI form scoring rate too isnt that fluent. When you compare that with KLR, they seem at par. Given Rohit's recent statement on how he wants India to attack more, I do not think KLR should walk in directly.
If anything he deserves to be dropped only if his fitness isn’t up to the mark. Otherwise he walks back into the side quite deservedly so.
Based on what? Form that he has displayed in the IPL over the years? In the last 6 months, the guy hasn't turned up for India- misses the Zimbabwe series and expects that he will walk back into the side? I think that it very very unfair on the likes of whosoever is dumped.

No matter how good a player has been, if the current setup has n o place for him ,one can't simply dump players to accommodate this fellow

He is the modern day version of Ajit Agarkar- gets you wickets, goes for runs- has enough batting potential but is unable to make a mark.

Ashwin has always been handy at keeping the scoring rate in check. He hasn;t been a penetrative wicket taker tbh. Stiffling the runs is one ting, but nowadays we need wickets. Also, his bating hasn;t improved by leaps and bounds that we can suddenly accommodate him.

Even after all the hate I have for Rahul's captaincy, KL walks into the side for T20 and ODI's over Shreyas Iyer for sure. Iyer has got a nice long rope and has not set things on fire by his standard. I am a bigger fan of Iyer compared to KL and saddens me but that is the truth. Our XI for the WC will be

1. Rohit
2. KL Rahul
3. Virat Kohli
4. SKY
5. Rishbh Pant
6. Hardik Pandya
7. Ravindra Jadeja
8. Bhuvi
9. Chahal
10. Harshal Patel
11. Jasprit Bumrah

Other squad members : Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik,Mohammad Shami, Shardul Thakur

Unfortunately even with Kohli out of form, he is making the XI just like KL.
Iyer doesnt fit in the T20 setup unless they sack Kohli. He tends to take his time to settle in and then playout an innings- still believe he is the ideal #4 in ODIs after Kohli or can even be considered for the CWC2023. The only way he might make the squad is based off his 'off-spin bowling 'abilities- something that Dravid and Rohit made a mention of earlier.

I like the look of this squad- still have questions over KLR for the reasons mentioned above. That apart, led by Rohit with Hardik as a long term deputy, this is a fascinating team. The reserves- I'd drop Axar. It also seems that Shami and Thakur are no longer in the scheme of things for the T20 format. The rest all are fine.

In terms of the playin XI- might want to open with Kishan-Rohit and have Hooda in place of VK.

I’m sorry but there is no way Rahul is on the same plane as Dhawan when it comes to their scoring rates in T20s. Dhawan’s best is often Rahul’s fairly average day when comparing their aggression.

Based on the form he has displayed both internationally and in domestic cricket. He has for the most part been more aggressive for India. Also I do not think he is ’missing’ the Zimbabwe series. You’re expecting him to justify his selection based on form whilst most others here, on social media and over in the Indian setup want him to justify it based on fitness. I do not think the former is applicable to a bloke who is a clear first-team player. As for the latter, it is up to the board to select him if they deem him fit for the Zimbabwe series. IMO it makes little sense to pick a bloke who is just returning from a long injury layoff which includes a surgery and then a bout of COVID for an ODI series and then immediately for a T20I tournament and then multiple further series before the eventual WC. The Asia Cup squad will also have very less overlap with the Zimbabwe squad and for good reason, anyone playing these back to back as a regular will get burnt out easily. Not sure why you’re lumping that on an injury prone player who’s just returning for no real benefit other than to get him into touch which he inevitably will during the Asia Cup.

With regards to Rohit’s statement, Rahul has shown that he has the skills to play aggressive cricket on a consistent basis. It is a mentality problem with him. I feel he is too self absorbed to accept meaningful criticism of his play and has a tendency to block it all out until he realises it himself or is forced to. The former is a trait that many great batters over history have shown and has led them to great heights but it can also lead to instances like Rahul‘s travails in tests four years ago. And you’re asking for him to be replaced by Kishan who himself has shown in multiple instances that he can be easily tied down and rendered a complete liability. What has Kishan done to even merit selection in the first place?

There's no reason why Rahul wouldn't be reinstated back at the top. Since his injury, Kishan, SKY and Pant have opened with Rohit, the latter two who were only stop gap solutions for other players to get chances. Kishan hasn't done anything extrordinary to warrant a place at the top ahead of Rahul. And it's been pretty obvious that Rahul's IPL SR has dipped since he was made the captain of his franchises. In this Indian side, that's not the case. If the Indian side is still sticking with the whole "go all out" approach, then KL is the best candidate, he's shown that in past IPL's and even in the recent one, he did score a brisk hundred or two as well. And being up there consistently as the Orange Cap holder over the last few seasons strengthens his case in a first choice lineup. The fact that no other player has staked a claim to be a first choice opener with lukewarm form doesn't really strengthen your argument here.

And on the topic of India's 15 for the T20 WC, Iyer has really fallen behind over the last few series. Hooda looks more likely to seal a place in the 15 ahead of him here. Also if Chahar is fit, I'd prefer him over Thakur. Thakur had a pretty meh IPL and hasn't been in the scheme of things internationally ever since. Chahar can bat as well as Thakur and his new ball exploits would be a bigger asset. And I'd take Axar over Ashwin too, Ashwin's batting hasn't drastically improved to a point where he can cover for Jadeja and Axar's batting has seemed to turn a corner recently.

India always like to have all rounders in team as in CWC 2011
They are repeating their same ancient strategy

Compare the strike rates of Kishan and Rahul, you will have a winner. Rahul is a stat-padder, more bothered about his personal records rather than the team's benefit. Point out even a single match that KLR won for India single-handedly? His stat=-padding has costed us in the past, costs us in terms of run scoring. If KLR can bat freely (say like Kishan) there's no reason why he shouldnt be in the side.

My concern right now- the team has done very well in his abscnece. Adding him to the squad (basically, they will play him in the XI)- this will mean the team has to adapt yet again. Now, compare this with the like of Australia or England, would they do so? Just cause KLR scored runs about a year ago?

KLR, even without the burden of captaincy is a pain to watch at times. I certainly do not wish to tune in to a match, where he keeps tapping the ball around and bulding himself in. For me, the new brand of cricket is all about attack. If KLR cannot, then he needs to go. Add to that, him and Kohli are guaranteed selections in the side. This, mark my words, will result in losses during the Asia Cup. I just hope it doesnt cost us the WT20 ,like the CWC2019 (that was Dhoni though)

Iyer- I agree, has fallen behind. I was quite surprising though that he is the leading run scorer in T20i for India. I still think Iyer has a mega role to play in the near future. However, he will, for the time being have to make do with ODIs. Once Kohli moves on, Iyer would probably end up being a mainstay in the team.

He hasn't opened for India in T20Is since 2017! How can we expect him to play at that spot? I think there's no way we are going to see Kohli open.

Pretty sure KLR's criticism is nothing more than recency bias.

I actually do not mind SKY opening. He did a decent job in WI.

@NILAYSHAH60 VK opening too might not be a bad idea. In fact, this was something that the ex-management under Shastri had been toying with. If VK needs more deliveries to settle (maybe try him for a game or two during the Asia Cup), maybe Rohit will have to go for his shot from the onset(something he has been doing). Remember, VK did open for RCB during the IPL as well.

And that would once again leave a hole in our middle order with hardly anyone to take the team through in case of a pressure situation. SKY should at all costs be playing between no.3 & no.5!

He has opened in atleast 5 innings every season since 2016 for RCB. So that doesn't give an idea whether he would get to do the same for India.
