India tour of England 2018

Its been 24 hrs so far since the series was lost, and the reactions are pretty muted back home in India. I am not expecting reactions from the general public, but I am expecting some reactions from importantly the BCCI and the guys who run cricket in India right now (COA). For a so-called world beating team, India have lost to both SA in SA, and now England in England. If this was 20 years back, the captain would have been sacked by now. It seems like this generation gives immunity to the captain (even Dhoni got that immunity despite those horror shows in 2011-14 where India hit massive lows overseas) and moulds the team around the image of the captain.

I am really hoping we hear something soon from the BCCI on what they plan to do with Virat Kohli. Winning overseas was so very important to us and if we have not achieved it, reactions should be really strong and leaders should face the heat.

Cook retiring after the final test and I really hope he finishes off with a century.. Great player , always enjoyed watching him play.. His defensive game was top quality and the way he scored loads of runs with the way he played was really something to watch..:thumbs

That No.6 slot needa fixing according to me. A reliable batsman there will free up Rahane and Pujara. We are entering test matches with just 3 batsmen effectively. This bravado has to stop at some point.

The thing is we have had one good inning from both Pujara and Rahane but apart from that it's only Kohli who has showed up in this series. I was very excited by KL Rahul but he has been very disappointing. He has been found out by the deliveries that comes in to him. Murli Vijay's game has declined and looks like it is the end of the road for him. I have never considered Dhawan as a test match player especially outside Asia. It's very early to judge Pant as of now but hopefully he comes good because he has talent and age on his side. I would like to see both Prithvi Shaw and Karun Nair in the next match. We have lost the series already so why not try someone new to see what we have got as the bench strength. I am not a fan of Karun Nair from what i have seen so far from him. However, they already have him as the back-up batsman so might as well give him a go.

Hardik is someone who is a confidence player. He needs his bowling to fire for it to translate into his batting form. As we saw in Trent Bridge test match where he bowled well and brought that confidence into his batting. However, this is defiantly not good enough from him. He has to improve and he is lucky that we do not have much luxury of seam bowling all-rounders in India otherwise he would have been out of the side by now.

Bowlers however deserve all the credit for being amazing so far in the series. They do lack that killer instinct because we did allow their tail to score a lot of runs but hopefully they can improve on that.

Ashwin was amazing in the first test match but this match was disappointing for him. I am not even sure if he was 100% fit or not. If he was not 100%, he should have never played.

No....you were beaten.......
Hahaha, alright, whatever you say. I thought it was obvious that I was trying to get on Zimrahil's nerve with that comment but seems like I was wrong.

I realised but didn't have time to bite :p

I disagree with this confidence thing of Pandya. If anything, he is the only player who has been given all the confidence in the world by this team management. Have we not won tests in the past with 4 bowlers? Its not what Pandya will become in 2 years time. Its what he is right now, or rather what he is not which is the problem. He is not good enough to be a test No.6 and definitely not a good enough 3rd seamer in tests or ODIs. Yet, you keep picking him with the hope that he will fire. The knowledge of having no regular No.6 batsman places immense pressure on the Nos.3,4 and 5, especially with the horrible starts that we are getting in this series. Look at how the middle order fared the moment our openers played out more than 15 overs. Its never about that one slot in a team. Its what Pandya is doing to the team balance. If this team management could drop Bhuvi after a 5er at Cape Town citing this 'horses for courses' theory, why was it such a tough decision to drop Pandya at Southampton? This side has dropped guys like Pujara, Rahane and Bhuvi who are all proven test match performers. Yet, Pandya has been given such an extended run for hardly anything.

You need to give some cushion to your middle order which is the meat of this batting lineup. There is nothing that precedes them and there is nothing that follows them. Lets just look at the last 2 tests. We've had two 100 run partnerships between Kohli and Rahane, as well as two of them between Kohli and Pujara. If you look at these two tests, these 100 run partnerships have been hard to come by. The difference between the sides is not these three but what follows and precedes them. However, I`m worried that they might try and tinker in areas where we must not. Pandya must go for now. The truth is that even if he had not got that 5er at Trent Bridge, someone else would have. Same goes with that 50 in the second innings which was essentially just a few free runs. Sometimes you can have a really good team but one slot could ruin the balance. It happened during the Australia tour of 2008 where we tried so hard to fit in Yuvraj into the test XI and therefore forced Dravid to open in the first two tests. It was only after the Sydney test that Yuvraj was dropped and Sehwag came in. It was just 1 change but those 40 runs at the start in the Perth test changed the series and therefore the tour.

This side has one of the best resources ever available to an Indian side in test history. We had so many occasions to just kill the opposition. What we did at Nottingham was kill the opposition challenge in that one session. Lets not mince words. This series loss is not purely due to performances but equally due to repeated tactical blunders.

Even a cricketing novice would tell you that when an opposition is down 86/6 and 150/6 in just over one session, a captain must not be looking at a 90-over bowling day. Yet, in both innings of this test, we bowled Pandya in those crucial phases. We did not just try Pandya but kept bowling him long spells even when he was giving away runs at a fast clip. Our best bowler in the 2nd innings, Shami bowled just 14 overs. The captain could surely have demanded his premier fast bowlers, all of whom have been really incisive in this series to bowl 5 overs more than what they did. There was an even weaker case for Pandya to bowl because Ashwin had already covered up for his overs with an economical 35-over spell. All this seems like the team management is trying to justify his selection over and over and over again. The fact that we overlook such basic tactical points which are not nuances but as glaring as a street sign is what is so sad.

This series is reminiscent of Australia's tour of England in 2015. England were second best for long spells of that series but managed to triumph because they were more clinical in game-changing moments; partly aided by luck, partly by conditions, partly by bad decisions from opponents and of course their own skill. The same has happened here too. If anything, England have more questions to answer than India at this point in time. India are just a minor tweaks away from a fully settled XI.

Pant looks too raw for the time being, in front of and behind the stumps. He might be better served playing overseas with A teams rather than the senior team for the sake of his confidence. Pandya has displayed incredible potential and is perhaps worth persisting with, especially with an upcoming tour of Australia where the conditions will perfectly suit him. He may not be a Stokes-esque player just yet but he isn't so raw that he can't survive at this level of the game. The only player who needs to be immediately dropped is Dhawan, he's simply not reliable enough and is the kind of player who'll score a meaningless century that'll buy him more time to waste. Team rating in the first four matches - 7.5/10 (batting 6.5/10, bowling 8.5/10, fielding 7.5/10).

England's top 3 spots are an absolute shambles, they're sitting ducks against virtually every kind of attack. Root in theory should be a world class batsman but he's so irresponsible that he'd be nothing more than a sideshow Bob (like Rahane or Warner) for India/Australia/South Africa/New Zealand. Bairstow - Stokes - Buttler is an elite middle order that will fully blossom with time, they just require patience. Curran has shown a lot of promise but it still remains to be seen how effective he'll be in fast/bouncy conditions. His batting and bowling techniques seem tailor-made for swinging and spinning conditions but he has shown an once-in-a-generation level of maturity in all aspects of his game. That being said, England's bowling attack seems sorely lacking. It's not often that two sub-continental pace attacks outshine England's in the same summer, it's a huge danger sign. Anderson is showing clear signs of decline in terms of pace and Broad in terms of control. They desperately need to try fresher options before their two legends become complete liabilities. The transition between eras must be as smooth as possible. Their spin attack is nothing to write home about either although in Leach they have a very good option waiting in the wings. Team rating in the first four matches - 7.5/10. (batting 7/10, bowling 8/10, fielding 7.5/10)

I can't understand how come you say 'Hardik Pandya will suit Australian conditions'. His bowling is medium pace at best and as he showed in the Trent Bridge test, he relies on conditions to get the swing that he got. If my knowledge/understanding of Aussie conditions is right, I don't think it will swing much there. Yes his batting could flourish a lot more there for the same reason (that it wont swing as much) but if we are picking him only for his batting, we'd rather pick a more specialist batsman who is sitting on the sidelines within the squad (like a Karun Nair who was part of the squad here in England).

India have potential to beat Aus in Aus but someone should take responsibility in batting front than carry entire burden on Kohlis shoulder

Pant suppose to play his NATURAL GAME than senior come to him and press him everyday how to adapt per test, when saha returns I am sure pant only remains in the team of 16 for long time.Srikar Bharat doing good in domestic in India but pant is okayed as keeper, he will learn

Cook is living after oval test: 12254 he is finest opener I ever seen from England besides Boycott but Cook's Stats better than SMG, Smith (SA),Haynes,SHEWAG and Boycott as OPENER.

SALUTE TO COOKY.WE WILL MISSED HIS SLIP CATHING IN SRILANKA IN OCT.2018.

Looks like Woakes will replace Rashid for the next test. That means proper batting till 9.

The last thing I would want now is India winning the 5th Test, thereby giving Shastri & Co. enough rope to hang onto for future tours - though I do think that even a scoreline of 1-4 will result in no repercussions.
