India tour of England 2018

If rumors are to be believed, MSD might call time on his ODI career soon. Although I do not think he will do it so close to the WC, I wouldn't be surprised if he does it too. The amount of negativity he has had to endure over the past week is baffling. I'm not oblivious to the decline in his batting prowess, but I also believe that if he thinks he is not fit to be in the playing XI, he will be the first person to make that tough call.

I'm not really a superfan of MSD but I think he has earned a right to decide when it's time to move on. He did that with his Test career and that in itself should be enough to make us realize that he knows what's he is doing. But if Raina is able to find a place in the team, I certainly place MSD miles above him.

With respect to the series, I stand by what I had said earlier. A series win in the Tests is a distant dream. The ODI series proved just that. What say @zimrahil ?

I also can't seem to find a valid reason to go in without attacking bowlers in ODIs. One of Umesh or Shami should always be a certainty in the limited overs format (in Tests, I would play them both at all times). Yes, they go runs more often than not but they also give you wicket taking options.

Agree with everything.
If Dhoni retires there won't be anyone guiding Kohli on the field in WC and we won't even make it to semis, surely.

Guess what ? Bhuvi is not fit. He aggravated the injury in last match and misses the Test series or atleast some matches. Stupid management. Why did they have to select Bhuvi if he is not fully fit ? Not only will we miss his bowling but his handy runs down the order will be missed. Bumrah is in the squad but won't play the first match.

Honestly, not a big fan of the idea of playing Bumrah in Tests. Pant is a good inclusion but I'm sure DK will be preferred and rightly so. I'm still not sure if Pant is ready for Tests. Bhuvi is a big blow. In English conditions, he can be quite lethal and his batting abilities would have helped.

This is something which was apparent straight away in the CT of 2017. Kohli and Shastri are high on meaningless bilateral wins, in addition to some high quality stuff they smoke. No team is remembered for bilateral series wins. Several sides have used the last 2 years to look at options and arrive at a settled side while we were happy just cashing in and not taking risks. If not in bilateral series, when would you take risks? We all know what Raina and Dhoni can do. What harm would it have done if Pant, Iyer, Karthik and Rahul had played through the whole ODI series? At least we would've known where they stand in English conditions. Now, we have no answers but only more questions. Also, we won`t know how these guys would fare in England before the WC. No matter how much Sai and Co. try to defend Raina and Dhoni, they are way past their prime. Raina's callback is no different to the attempt at getting Yuvraj back. We have a wealth of new talent.

Also, what has Hardik Pandya done to be a certainty in the side? When was his last meaningful contribution to a winning cause, maybe the ODI series at home against Australia. Why should guys be considered indispensible? If Pant or Karthik are good enough to be the keeper, so be it. Lets not care if its close to the WC. Dhoni himself took harsh moves in the leadup to the 2011 WC and look at the results. Lets not obsess with having an allrounder for the sake of it. More often than not, genuine batsmen and bowlers will win you matches. Look at the Aussie sides of the past who had no allrounders and depended on specialists to win you games. ODIs are not extended T20s. We must stop treating them that way. Pandya might be a key part of the T20 lineup but we cannot trust him (at least at this stage) to bowl 10 overs or bat 25 overs to rescue us. His very limited utility is to slog in the last 5 overs and give us about 5-7 overs of bowling. This is where we are not picking our best batsmen and rather playing guys like Raina just because he can bowl a little. Lets pick 5 genuine bowlers who are certainties to give you 10 overs more often than not and 6 batsmen who can fire consistently. Lets not have an allrounder for the sake of it.

My XI for the next ODI series (and not for the WC for now)

Dhawan/Sharma
Rahul/Dhawan
Kohli
Rahul/Iyer
Karthik
Pant
Bhuvi
Ashwin/Chahal/Jadeja
Kuldeep
Umesh/Shami
Bumrah

Rumors have been circulating on Social media that MSD would be retiring soon. Some of them have even come to a conclusion that he might announce his retirement within next couple of days. Dhoni taking the match ball from umpire after the match might be due to one reason among these 2:
1) Last series played against England in England.
2) Retirement.

And also he was seen gifting his gloves to one of his fans before getting into the bus. I don't know what this indicates from MSD career prospective but it surely shows his fine gesture towards his fans.

It's really sad to see dhoni face all the criticism for his performance. As zwarrior said, he has got that right to call off his career on his own and not by internal pressure. I don't think Dhoni in playing XI just to guide Virat and be the acting captain to a nominal captain is arguable. As far as Virat keeps making all the kinds of mess with the team selection, the effective dhoni captaincy behind stumps won't matter. Dhoni should either perform or move on. Mind you, I'm one of the biggest fans of MSD. But situation is completely different now.

I see your point but I don’t think so Ms will/should retire now because if he had to he should have done it before this series and tbh one bad series does not define him. He is probably the best with the gloves at the moment and fit as well. The experience behind the stumps plays an important role as well to guide with the field and strategies. This clearly wasn’t the Ms we have seen in the past as he never looked to accelerate also the fact that both the games the openers and the top order didn’t do much. In my opinion the openers are the ones who set the momentum of the game and whenever rohit Sharma plays so many dot balls to start and gets out early, it puts pressure to the rest like in the past two games. I hope Ms gets back with a bang come in September for Asia cup and Australia and doesn’t keep the white stubble which makes people wanting him to retire even more lol

Bhuvi out. It's unreal how I could spot from a million miles away that he needed to be rested but the great captain and coach couldn't.
