India tour of New Zealand - Jan to Feb 2014

But the prime thing is, their batting should not get affected. If both continue their batting well, India will be superbly served.
History Of cricket captain reveals that, players have only got better when they were given responsibility..
Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are the two good examples.

However, if you look at test batting than Karthik would be in front just because he has far better technique than any other.
At the end of the day, no one talks about a player's technique, but how many matches he won for the team :)
I suppose, presently, Dhoni has got the most unorthodox technique than any other player. But he scores runs and wins matches for India.

I like pujara a lot but to me he's his own man when batting, he may well become captain, because he'll probably be a fixture of the side for the next 10 years or so and just by default seem an obvious captain at one point but I think really he'll be better when just left to get on with making big scores his own way.

kohli has always lead from the front, he's played ODI knocks with complete awareness of the match situation, and I think he's tended to play better the more responsibility he's given. tactically who knows how good he is but he's more of a team player and would be a good fit for a captain.

all moot imo though because regardless of dhoni's poor overseas batting record he's been the best captain india has had since ganguly, and perhaps even the best ever, he commands a lot of respect and has provided incredible stability in a job that comes with off-field politics and on-field pressure. I wouldn't be looking to replace him until after the world cup in 2015 at the earliest. in any format.

I think if we are looking for a new captain post 2015, then MSD should step down as the T20 captain. It will help him relax a bit, reduce his workload, and we can groom a new captain (probably Kohli) as the new T20 captain. Plus Kohli is the captain of RCB as well, so it wont be too awkward.

Dhoni can still play as keeper/finisher in T20 because there is really no match for his skills in ODIs

That's true on flat pitches, but on pitches with some seam movement, you need technique to score runs.

Technique may not be talked of much in flat batting wickets on the subcontinent, but it sure becomes a factor when India tours outside subcontinent.

Its so disturbing and disgusting to hear that someone like Rahul Dravid could advocate Indian players playing in Ranji cricket than to arrive in advance for an overseas tour We get the stick both ways, BCCI says - The Times of India. I know Dravid is close to Prasad, but that doesn't mean he supports everything that his friends say. Sending our players to NZ early to get acclimatized to the conditions is far better than having them play mundane Ranji trophy cricket on dead pitches at home. Dravid should know this (he has spoken before about getting enough preparation for overseas tours; while he was playing).

So disappointed with Dravid's statement.:facepalm

Did you see his statement on cricinfo matchpoint? It makes total sense. It is a matter of one day, they will literally arrive in NZ a day later. The only reason members of the ODI squad are not allowed to play in this round of Ranji is because the players are taking off on Day 4. Why can't they leave a day later? Is that day really going to make a difference in terms of acclimatizing to conditions?

What Dravid says makes total sense. Guys like Bhuvi have not played competitive cricket for weeks now, having been warming the benches in SA. Out of form players can get a chance for some valuable red ball cricket to bat themselves back into some confidence. Plus, Ranji trophy isn't some shoddy tournament - it is a big deal. ESPECIALLY now that it is in the quarter finals.

I would hardly call his statements to be 'disgusting', lol

Well said, you just pulled out the words from my mouth.

What is this all about? Did Delhi actually play all their home games on green pitches under Gambhir this season?
Yes, Delhi had two grounds, the flat Feroz Shah Kotla and the green swinging Roshanara Club.
I guess they just played one game on Kotla, rest all on Roshanara.

The Roshanara Club ground is termed as India's second most green swinging wicket after the one at Dharamshala. The team kept on choosing it as they had plenty of quick bowlers; and the plan seemed to work pretty well too as Delhi managed to bundle out their opponents thrice below 100 I guess.
Punjab at one stage was 34/8. :lol

Probably 'disgusting' was a harsh word, but I still completely disagree with Dravid's statement (and even Gavaskar says the same now). On this thing, I support the BCCI. The guys who are not allowed to play that extra day of Ranji trophy are getting time in New Zealand to get used to the conditions. That any day is a bigger benefit than playing an extra day in Ranji trophy just to give it a higher standard. On these dead pitches, it doesn't matter even if you are the world's best ever fast bowler of all time, you won't get much purchase and you will be made to look pedestrian and bad.

Its better that these guys get an extra day in NZ where they will be playing in more challenging conditions over the next month or two.

I agree too with Sai.

Moreover it might look like just 1 day, what's the deal. But, if these players are going to have that 1 day as bad, say getting dismissed cheaply or bowled bad - this is going to haunt their confidence level thoughout the NZ tour. I would prefer these players going to kiwi land than wasting time here, playing on these Indian conditions is just not a big deal at all anytime for our players!

New Zealand are going to whitewash India and its going to be the funniest thing ever!

(getting my support for the plucky underdog out of the way...)

If that would happen, either teamIndia partied too much with 'over'confidence ,or they forgot cricket. :p If we play our natural game as a team, it's more than enough to win the series. With SA loss still biting us, I would assume its Kiwis who has lots to do. :)
