Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Rubbish that Raina plays like this even after the fall of an early wicket, in a high stakes match. And he wants to become the next full time captain of CSK post Dhoni's retirement.

Good that they picked Murali Vijay instead of Shorey. The innings gets a restart now with Vijay batting with Watson. Watson really needs to stamp his authority today. Cant always rely on MSD.

Don't want another MI VS CSK final now. Better be Dc or even SRH would do irrespective of the result.

Congratulations to Mumbai for reaching the final! For the form they've shown this season, they should be clear favorites to win the title! I can't see any of CSK/DC/SRH beating MI in the final.

I concur too. I kinda feel CSK do not deserve to be in the finals this season. They've rode all the way on just one man - MS Dhoni and the pressure on him is starting to show up negatively on him. We cannot ride on MSD and luck all the time. Everytime CSK get out of jail, they're praised as if they are god almighty but honestly we've been lucky this season. And the stubborn-ness to not change the XI and remove out of form players is costing us (I literally was laughing when this whole "they backed Watson..." thing became a compliment for MSD and the management). When Vijay had a good innings against MI in Chepauk, he should've continued and Faf should've replaced Watson.

DC v MI final will be more fitting to end the season.

I feel we will see Mumbai and Chennai in the final again with Mumbai taking the trophy. I just feel that Mumbai have more in form players right now and therefore I don't see them losing this. I am surprised TBH to see Chennai even in contention because their batting just hasn't shown up in this tournament so far.

I might have defended this ground on previous ocassions, but today’s pitch wasn’t good for a knockout t20 game IMO. Chahar was getting some crazy turn on the pitch.

Feel like Rohit outsmarted Dhoni today, with how well he rotated his bowlers, and in his team’s approach to the chase tonight. CSK’s team selection was poor too. Santner should have been playing instead of Watson, would have given the team an extra bowling option.

Raina reminds me a lot of Rooney, in the way he’s looking past it despite not even being that old and also with how he peaked early in his career. Irrespective of current season’s results, CSK really need to set the foundation for a post Dhoni setup starting next season. I’d really like to see more Tamil Nadu players in the team. Sundar is an obvious replacement target for Harbhajan and Shankar should also play much better in CSK when he’s got a better middle order around him. Some of the English or Aussie players post-WC should also be targets. I’d love to see someone like Maxwell play for CSK. And finally, they need to invest in a young exciting Indian batting prospect like they did with Raina at the very first auction.

I wonder if CSK even thinks along those lines of going for Tamil Nadu players. At the end of the day, this is a city/state based tournament. There is a certain passion when you come from the same state/city that you play for. I am sure the likes of Sundar, Shankar, Ashwin (both Ashwins), Karthik, etc will play with more passion when they play for CSK. And these players are established guys who are sought after in other franchises. I can't see a reason why CSK would not try to rope in a few of these guys.

No point blaming CSK team selection. When it clicks, everyone will say "Oh CSK follows formula of backing out of form players and its a trend...". But when it fails, everyone will keep mum till the time it succeeds. When Watson said that he'd have been dropped way earlier with the kind of season he has had this year, he is right. And to me, its CSK's mistake that they've carried an out of form Watson through the season. Maybe they could've topped the table if Watson was dropped earlier (they were just a tiny hair behind MI in NRR).

CSK has to find a good player who can captain the side post-Dhoni. And if Raina is retained, he should be pushed down the order. Personally I would relieve Raina and try to get him on RTM.

The thing is that they didn't have enough to defend so he couldn't have done much except taking the game forward. So I don't think anything wrong in getting in some tight overs to exert pressure on the MI batting line-up

A lot of DC's success credit is owed to GG. But, no one will talk about it because of his personality. He bowed out last year and while it didn't do them any favours in 2018, it really has helped them build for 2019 while keeping their nucleus intact.

I don't understand this "state" players should play for their own state. It's not Ranji trophy. If, that is someone's inclination, Ranji trophy is very much on TV. Kohli is nothing like a Karnatakan or Bangaloreite but that's now his identity. Dhoni I can argue then should have played from KKR, since that's closest to Ranchi. IPL is not Ranji trophy. Once a franchise adopts a player and once a player has served for a franchise and makes a living off them, they become inter-twined. It's not just a case in point for cricket, but also for sport in general. I think, more than being from a certain state, it's about the journey one embarks on with a franchise.

I can't see why this state discussion is happening, but I have a feeling where this has originated from. :p

Chennai have properly been on the Dhoni wave this year. Mumbai has been the most balanced side from the day they unearthed the Pandya's and Bumrah became the bowler he is.

He could also have played for Hyderabad based franchise (Deccan Chargers) as even that is close to it[DOUBLEPOST=1557329366][/DOUBLEPOST]

Still feel Bumrah's performance has been a bit under-par. He is much more capable than what he has done so far this IPL

There’s a reason why teams like the Lisbon Lions or Barcelona’s all conquering side from a decade ago are revered particularly highly, and it’s due to the impact of local players particularly on fans. It’s not about having nearly every state player only play for their respective city based franchise or the closest one, in that case we’d have Mumbai walking away with the title every season lol.

I’ve been on both sides of this debate several times, and I feel teams should at least try to get in a local player during the auction if he’s good enough for the playing XI. KKR for eg would only have Shami to play in the XI and so could be an exception where as a team like RCB would have a plethora of options and certainly could have done more. There needs to be a balance. Every BBL team usually has at least one local player in the playing XI to cite another example. At the end of the day, this wouldn’t be a debate if there weren’t mega and giga auctions every few years to shake up all the teams.

And yes, certain regions do feel pride from having their local players represent their franchises, and I don’t understand why you’d be taking a dig at that :)

Also given how he swears after nearly every incident on the field, Kohli’s very much a Delhi fella no matter where he plays :p
