Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Respect for Sreyas Iyer! Immense respect! He's won me over today. One certain captain would never have done that in this IPL.

There’s a reason why teams like the Lisbon Lions or Barcelona’s all conquering side from a decade ago are revered particularly highly, and it’s due to the impact of local players particularly on fans. It’s not about having nearly every state player only play for their respective city based franchise or the closest one, in that case we’d have Mumbai walking away with the title every season lol.

I’ve been on both sides of this debate several times, and I feel teams should at least try to get in a local player during the auction if he’s good enough for the playing XI. KKR for eg would only have Shami to play in the XI and so could be an exception where as a team like RCB would have a plethora of options and certainly could have done more. There needs to be a balance. Every BBL team usually has at least one local player in the playing XI to cite another example. At the end of the day, this wouldn’t be a debate if there weren’t mega and giga auctions every few years to shake up all the teams.

And yes, certain regions do feel pride from having their local players represent their franchises, and I don’t understand why you’d be taking a dig at that :)

Also given how he swears after nearly every incident on the field, Kohli’s very much a Delhi fella no matter where he plays :p

The dig was not meant for you. And the IPL is the IPL for how balanced it is in terms of team strength. One or two local players are fine.. but if we start selecting as per state, it would just be another Ranji Trophy!

Getting Pant will open the door wide open for SRH. Crossing my fingers that the pacers dont fail again at the death.

Nope. Too late for SRH. The RRR is fairly comfortable to achieve.

Also SRH's best bowler today won't complete his quota of overs today.

Another brainfade for Pant.

If it is not about the state/city, why call it "Chennai Super Kings" or "Mumbai Indians" or Royal Challengers Bangalore", etc? Take the city name out of it. I never advocated for a team to have 100% local players (point my post if I did and I will apologize and retract my statements immediately). I did say that an IPL team should have local players for that connect with the city. The passion is a lot more when you hail from the same city for which you play in the IPL.

CSK did well at the auctions in the initial years when they had Ashwin, Vijay, Anirudha Srikanth, Badrinath in their squad. But as years went by, they moved away from it.

Also SRH's best bowler today won't complete his quota of overs today.

Another brainfade for Pant.

Well... He has put DC almost into Qualifier-2.

Pant played one hell of a knock. One big mistake to bowl Thampi, and SRH look on the verge of losing.

Agree with the one or two players at minimum, that’d be totally fine and pretty much falls in line with most other leagues plus football teams usually.

Pant might have gotten out at the wrong moment but had he not been aggressive like he was, this game would have never got to the stage where they needed just a few singles. Williamson made a huge error in giving Thampi the 18th over when he still had 2 overs of Khaleel left, unlike Dhoni who loves taking games to the last over irrespective of who bowls, Pant will smash everyone and it showed :p

Really wish Delhi still had Rabada though. I’d have them as favourites for the next game if they had him. Chennai will thrive on the nerves that this Delhi side openly exhibits though.

Really concerned with Bhuvi’s recent form too, his speed seems to have fallen off massively and it’s really affecting his bowling. Unlike someone like Mustafizur, Bhuvi isn’t extremely accurate either and tends to leak runs when he’s low on confidence. Hoping that he picks up his speed once the WC starts.

Just watched highlights of today's game. How is Amit Mishra OUT? How many times in the past have we seen batsmen run across the stumps to put themselves in a position where they try to ensure that the throw doesn't hit the stumps? I cant recall the match, but I remember once where even MS Dhoni has done it. Mishra did not purposely kick the ball or attempt to do anything to the ball or to the fielder. Getting in line so that Khaleel's throw is not hitting, should be fine. If the law says that's also not fine, then the law should change. A batsman should be able to get in the line of the ball and take a hit on himself if he can ensure that the ball does not hit the stumps. The batsman should not try to get in contact with the ball or do anything to the fielder who is effecting the throw, but putting himself in the line of the ball should be fine.

Then how do you expect the batsman to get out (which should be the case) even after hitting the stumps accurately only to be obstructed by the batsman with his body or cricket gear?

It's a kind of cheating. Obstructing the field just to be safe from direct hit. Lol
