Indian Premier League - General Discussion

All this sounds cool but what about loyalty? it's damn rough to let players go!

I think 3 player retentions are more than enough. MI is recognised by the likes of Rohit and yes it would be unfair to steal marquee players. But if you want to create a spectacle for the fans and now allow franchises to dictate terms in the long run, these steps are necessary.

By what I am suggesting, Rohit, Pollard and Bumrah will be retained by MI and that's enough to keep franchise loyalty.

Just how bad the season is getting off the field also for CSK? Lungi Ngidi posts cryptic tweet and likes a comment on his tweet that said "You deserve a better IPL team bro".

For a management like CSK that's known for its iconic backing of players and making them feel happy and at home, they've had too much of bickering/infighting this season. First the rumors around Suresh Raina and the 'Balcony Gate' and now this. And the rumors around the contract termination of Raina and Harbhajan. And all this happening when MS Dhoni is around? I would understand if all this was happening after MSD retired from IPL.

Hope CSK can still salvage this season and make a spirited run for the playoffs. I still trust in Dhoni and Fleming to make a very good fight of this in the second half of the tournament. But what I worry about is the handling of affairs from the team management post Dhoni retirement.

I think you are reading too much into the media drivel. Raina has never come across as the 'type' to fuss over such things. In fact, I doubt anyone who has an opportunity at such big money would give up that for a 'balcony.'

As far as Ngidi is concerned, it seems to be a case of one bad apple. By indulging in such crap, he limits his options with other teams as well because of all the good things you say about CSK's management. He has never occurred to me as a LOI bowler and he is rightly an option even after Hazlewood.

I will repeat- Do not count CSK out!

I really wish this year's mid season transfer window throws up some very interesting possibilities that potentially turns the tournament around. Obviously from a selfish perspective, I hope CSK keep their eyes/ears open and look to find some replacements in the mid-season transfer window. This season, even capped players (internationals) can be traded after the 7th game as long as they have played 2 or fewer games this season.

Big big mistake by Punjab to release R Ashwin. They just put so much pressure out there on KL Rahul. SRK kept the faith on Dinesh Karthik for KKR, and KKR have not done badly so far. Always as usual, Preity Zinta and her team continues to show scramble thinking. We can see that in the way she behaves in the auctions.

Mid season transfers are an eye wash and even more so in times of COVID. A Delhi Capitals will never release a Rahane to a CSK for example just because they want to have a back up. And why help a franchise when you might need someone? My feeling is that transfers will be made between struggling franchises i.e RR and KXIP and nothing more. May be, SRH can give a bowler to a RCB for a batter. That's about it. If any transfers are made at all, I'll be surprised.

On Ashwin, it's your opinion that Punjab made an error. Bishnoi has more value than Ashwin at this stage for a franchise and Punjab's issues are only fast bowling related. If Ashwin had to be retained, he had to be captain. That's the only place where I see his value. I think Delhi is a far better fit for him where he has some support and a management that understands him. Punjab and RCB are a certified catastrophe and it will be made more emphatic soon when you will see the ridiculous ownership at Punjab make Gayle play soon and disturb the best opening combination of the tournament. PZ btw does not have that much stake in the franchise. Wadia himself has been known to influence the starting XI but it's easy to put it upon PZ as she's a star. Also, she's a childhood crush, so watch where you're going with this. :p

Pandyas and the new lads? I'm like rules are rules but as a fan, at a stage it feels good to get new players but same to let players go, it hurts...

I honestly don't support any franchise. I'll be over the moon if AB goes anywhere else. So I have no biased.

You would have not been against a mega auction after season 3 right when Rohit was at DC?

Every governing body should restore balance in sport. I am a F1 tragic since 1994 and you should see the helplessness of the sport right now. Before franchises become too powerful, best to clip the wings.

Can't deny the fact but football is going absolutely awesome with the transfers based on money, yeah it'll require a lot of money to play a part and we don't have that much in cricket.

The thing about MI is our owners try to buy back the core and spend in almost 60% of the budget in that, 2021's auction - let's see what's up for grabs.

The core is made and left by Ponting. It has been vastly assisted by the other franchises and their daft decision making in terms of trade. I think RCB aside, all franchises tend to buy smart. MI's jackpot was the emergence of Bumrah and the Pandya's.

RR - Drops Tom Curran for leaking 12-13 rpo in each match and picks Andrew Tye

Andrew Tye - 4-0-50-1

Yesterday's loss can be attributed to Jaiswal. Guy uses 5 overs of the first 10 and scores less than run-a-ball putting pressure at the other end (Butler/Smith/Samson were casualties)

It's a little harsh but it kind of looked like he was playing for his spot rather than the team.

If Manan Vohra is part of RR and he's not playing, it's a bit of a sham.

I just felt something about Samson this IPL

His first 2 matches clearly show why he needs to be in the Indian side but the other 4 matches actually show why he hasn't made the team till now. He has got to produce something now with these consistent failures.

Saw this on cricinfo - I know MSD has a genius cricketing mind and believes in players and CSK backs them to no end which gives them confidence to perform, yada, yada.

But this is just awful for a player coming in at no.5

On the topic of mega-auctions I've had two ideas that I think could potentially help teams not lose out on plenty of their players and also ensure that they don't hoover up the best players year after year. Bear in mind that I've got no idea of what exactly the numbers should be as I think that is a conversation best left after thorough analysis rather than virgin ideas.

  1. Teams get a significantly reduced budget for retaining players (somewhere between 20-25 crores?). However the number of players that they are allowed to retain is also significantly increased and anyone below a certain pay (5 crores is what I thought of but could be lesser too given how several star overseas players are paid less than that) can be retained by the franchise if they increase the current pay of the player by a fixed percentage subject to the approval of the player (10-20%?). This way, you don't penalize franchises that invest heavily in their youth (going for several young players and letting them develop by giving them matches and backing them even when they aren't consistent) and you get to see a consistent growth of younger core at a franchise that can potentially one day step into the marquee role(s) as replacements. It also allows franchises to retain players that they sign up as bargains encouraging better scouting and shrewder bids. This solves the issue of teams' losing identities every mega auction and helps preserve some of it while also ensuring that no more than one or two marquee players can be retained if they wish to do so. Any player that feels they could earn more in the auction will agree to be released in any case while those happy at the club would be willing to continue. One of the lesser discussed aspects is how players have to essentially move franchises frequently which I'm not sure would be suitable for everyone. This does help with that too. You could also get franchises like the older Rajasthan side focusing exclusively on bargains and players with potential while allowing them to retain a nucleus of their team for several seasons.
  2. Teams are allowed to retain only one or two players for any amount of money but are given a lot more RTM cards (6 to 9 perhaps?)(for the uninitiated, this works a bit like the 'right to refusal' system that exists in football and certain other sports. Any price that is agreed upon can be matched by a club with this card). The catch is that before being released, every player of a franchise is asked if they are willing to agree to get RTM-ed or not. An example of how it would work is Gauti's move to Delhi two seasons ago. Kolkata agreed to not use a RTM card on him as he wished to move to Delhi. My system would make this mutual agreement more ironclad in place. The only drawback I can see is that teams can threaten a few players on the lower end of the payscale or at risk of not being picked up that they will not bid for them if they don't agree to a potential RTM. This system does ensure that franchises can opt to try and retain their core if needed but will have to pay out a lot of money to ensure that they do that. Mumbai for example had to significantly overpay for Krunal Pandya in 2018 as other franchises knew he would be inevitably retained and drove up the price. It also encourages a sort of meta-game wherein people may make it seem like they are going to retain a player only to pull away at the last second.
