Indian Premier League - General Discussion

If you want to save money you don't let go the biggest name in cricket. It's why Dhoni could probably play for CSK until he's 50.

That is the only reason why Bangalore have persisted with Kohli. It is no coincidence that he gets to be captain despite comfortably having the worst win percentage as a captain with so many games in IPL history. As for money saved, I meant the impact of having 17 crores invested in one solitary player with a fixed salary cap. For that amount of money you would expect a 2016 Kohli every season and instead you could comfortably get two Indian internationals in your side and still have cash left over to sign an undervalued overseas player.

RCB management need to convince Kohli to drop Finch, Siraj next match and bring Josh Philippe and Spinner in to the lineup... Finch still not settle in the league, he scored runs, but he always ready to get out any time like Jos doing for RR... Give ABD rest from keeping and always use him in his fixed position of batting... Virat need to open with Paddikal...
I'd say get Parthiv in, so that Zampa can come in. Gives a great third spinner, keeps Siraj out of the XI, and also relieves AB from keeping

Omg. Just watch Gayle in the post match presentation. He looks pathetic with the type of behaviour he brings in these days!! Deserves a ban for this!

Ridiculous stuff from Punjab! Absolutely pathetic! A game that they should have won in the 18th over, they win it off the last ball. That was some seriously nonsense meltdown. And the reason for it was the so-called "Universe Boss". I mean, come on! He is still self boasting about himself in the post match interview thats happening right now.

And Rahul - this is the second time he's been part of a serious meltdown. Last time, they lost the game to KKR. This time, they almost lost another one. Whats wrong with him?

Hope MI keep their form up against KKR tomorrow (from a CSK fan perspective). I know CSK don't yet have to start worrying about other team's results, but I hope things are easier for them :D

KL can't bat on both ends. It was him who put the grunt in that innings. Gayle was 4/5 of 15 odd balls. And if you are critical of CSK's running between the wickets, what is your opinion of Punjab's today? Rahul not only had to hit when it was required but he also was limited massively in terms of rotating and converting. There's only so much one person can do. It is sheer stupidity to attribute even 1% blame to him. In a game which was filled with absolutely pathetic cricket, Morris, Rahul and Mayank stood out.

For long term's sake, if Bangalore's ownership was seriously interested in winning the trophy they would have released Kohli years ago.
Really find no sense in this. Why do we keep forgetting that even after his abysmal captaincy, he is still one of the best ever batsmen in the IPL.

Surely the captaincy should be changed and should have been changed a long time ago, but releasing Kohli would not only be harmful for the batting, but also the fact that it would remove a large chunk of the fan base.

When Moeen Ali first hit the auction, I was so sure he would be wearing yellow. It is just criminal that he is on the bench for that fat hag!!

I am criticizing Gayle there. His running was pathetic and due to that, it put pressure on Rahul (I did criticize Rahul because being the class that he is, he should be finding ways out of these situations by now). And actually - this sort of reiterates my earlier call about Watson and Rayudu not batting together. Imagine this chase with CSK in place of Punjab and Watson-Rayudu running the way they are doing right now. CSK would have lost this by 10-15 runs. Second innings, wicket getting really slow/two paced, boundaries are tougher and tougher to come by, and you need to keep rotating strike to keep things going.... And CSK would made a royal mess outta this!

I really don't understand your obsession with Moeen. He is at best an average all rounder at this moment.

2 left hand batsman to open is not good idea... Kohli perform best as opener in T20, also he can control Paddikal from one side and make him even effective player for RCB... Philippe is explosive batsman, he deserves at least 2-3 chance in RCB... If he clicks, RCB can have deadly finishers lineup like MI {no team can match that, but still}...

So does that mean Negi comes in to be the third spinner? :D

I would suggest Parthiv and Moeen Ali.

We have best all-round team in the last 13 years, but still we lose game like this...
Are you joking?
RCB's batting has been fully dependent on Virat and ABD and their bowling has been worst.

Bowling is not worst today, only VK's captaincy and Siraj's master delivery spoil the match for RCB...

Now I realize why Virat gave 3rd over to Siraj... when first two overs, Virat and ABD did excellent fielding, he did run towards them, and congrats to them for there efforts, so that's why Virat see only Siraj as a match winner {for KXIP} and gave extra over to him, head of Udana and Chahal...

Surely the captaincy should be changed and should have been changed a long time ago, but releasing Kohli would not only be harmful for the batting, but also the fact that it would remove a large chunk of the fan base.

The issue is that you cannot separate Kohli the batsman and Kohli the captain as long as he remains as the national captain. When you spend that much amount of money, you cannot get by with just skill in one role no matter how good you are at that unless you fill a very specific niche role that is a very rare commodity (Cummins for his express pace). Even then, I would argue that the money spent can be better utilized to strengthen multiple areas. And everything that you've mentioned is what I listed under the short-term hits that Bangalore will take. You will lose on the Kohli stans that stick by him but will the people of Karnataka or Bangalore stop supporting the franchise? Heck no! Bangalore has a huge amount of passion for their sports teams, I've seen it in football and cricket and I've seen it in their eyes. You don't get packed houses with boisterous voices at the Chinnaswamy year after year of disappointments unless you have real passion for the team. One player, no matter how big he is leaving would never ever change that.

As for losing on the batting, I prefer to see it this way.

  • Does Kohli earn the most amount of money in the IPL? Yes.
  • If so, should he not be the highest run scorer or at the very least in the top three run scorers given that huge amount of investment? Also yes.
  • So, where does he rank on the list of runs scored in the 2018 edition? Seventh and most importantly everyone above him has a better strike-rate. Bit of a weird point to bring up given his role but it illustrates the accusations of several of his good performances not being match-winning.
  • 2019? Eighth and this time three players above him score at a slower pace.
  • This season? Currently fourth.
  • If he does not offer that amount of runs, it is fine as long as he does a stellar job at his other role. Rohit and Dhoni are both paid 15 crores and neither of them are anywhere near the top ten in the last two individual seasons. However, they also win games for their respective sides with their superb strategic thinking and lead their sides by example. Kohli in contrast is paid two crores more and fails to do that. Even being an average captain would suffice but Kohli has been spectacularly bad, last I remember his win rate was somewhere in the mid 40s. And Dhoni himself recognized that he was overpaid which is why those rumours of him wanting CSK to release him and pick him up in the auction at a cheaper price kept floating around.
  • All of this ultimately ties in with why @LiveLoveABD keeps stressing on Kohli not being a match-winner with the bat even on his good days and not a top five T20 batsman. I wouldn't be this harsh on him and have him in my personal top five but there are very valid arguments as to why the current Kohli is earning far more than what he should do based on his incredible international record. We do know that Kohli can be in the top three run scorers in a season too, in 2016 he was first by a significant margin and in 2011 and 2013, second and third respectively. I get that you should be rewarded for being so consistent but that much percentage? My answer would be no, but I do understand that commercial reasons and not sporting ones are the reason for him being retained at that cost despite not being worth that high amount of money (for the record I believe no one is truly worth that much at the moment).
