India's tour of Australia - December/January 2015

If the test is indeed cancelled, they should inform BCCI asap so the Indian players can atleast go home to their families for a week or so, if they wish to. Since it will be almost 2 weeks until the 2nd Test. They wouldn't want to be confined to their hotel rooms and nets

I don't think returning is a possibility. All said and done its still a tough tour, and an extra week should be used to acclamatise to the conditions. Unless the whole tour is done away with, then of course the decision needs to be taken ASAP. Personally I feel the test would go ahead on schedule. There is nothing to be achieved by not playing the series or test. In fact the sooner cricket returns the sooner everyone can move on from the incident.

Option should clearly be given to the Australian players however, if they feel ok to go on with the test then of course it should go on however if they don't feel 100% up to it cancelling it appears the only choice.

A big part of it might depend on the funeral arrangements: I'd imagine that a fair few of the Australian players would want to go to the funeral and perhaps would object to a game taking place on the day even if they weren't. I imagine that the Hughes family would take that into account when planning things - although that sounds like a really awful thing to say...

The release from Cricket Australia is below:

1) Phillip Hughes funeral to take place on Wednesday 3 December

The Hughes family has confirmed funeral arrangements for their son Phillip.

The funeral will take place at 2.00pm on Wednesday 3 December in the Hughes family’s home town of Macksville in northern New South Wales.

It will be held in the sports hall of Macksville High School where Phillip was educated. Given the limited capacity in the hall, overflow areas will be made available for guests to watch the service via vision screens set up on the school’s two ovals.

The service will be broadcast live by the Nine Network with provisions made for all other television networks.

ABC Local Radio and the Fairfax Radio Network will also broadcast the service live around the country. It will also be streamed live on Cricket Australia’s website and app.

Qantas has scheduled two additional B737 services between Sydney and Coffs Harbour on Wednesday to assist people wishing to attend the funeral. Qantas has provided these services purely on a cost recovery basis. Additional services may be scheduled in coming days.

The journey from Coffs Harbour to Macksville is approximately 45 minutes by car.

CA Chief Executive James Sutherland said: “We are grateful to the Australian community for the overwhelming show of support it has extended to the Hughes family in recent days.

“The offers of assistance for Wednesday’s service have been remarkable.

“While we know that people from all around the nation want to pay their respects to Phillip, there will only be limited capacity in Macksville, so the work of our broadcasters will help ensure people around the country can follow the service on TV, radio and online.

Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family and friends continue to be respected in the lead up to Wednesday’s funeral.

The SCG Trust and Adelaide Oval will also show Phillip's funeral service live on their big screens.

2) First Test will not start on Thursday 4 December

Cricket Australia has announced that the first Commonwealth Bank Test match between Australia and India will not start on Thursday 4 December as scheduled.

Details around the Test match are still to be determined.

Sutherland said: “These are extraordinary circumstances and we simply couldn’t or wouldn’t expect our players to be emotionally ready to start a Test match the day after farewelling one of their teammates.

“Their welfare is our absolute priority. They are grieving and to expect that they could play a high-pressured, five-day Test match the following day is out of the question.

“We appreciate the incredible understanding and support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It has been nothing short of outstanding during these difficult times.

“We fully acknowledge the many groups who want to know when the Test will take place, particularly cricket fans in Queensland, Queensland Cricket and Stadiums Queensland.

“We just ask the cricket community for some patience as we work through a range of scenarios in full consultation with the players, the Indian Board, the ICC and our broadcasters.

“We hope to resolve all matters in the next few days and will let cricket fans and the game’s many important stakeholders know as a priority.”

Ticket sales for the Test have been suspended.

“We know that there are many people who have purchased tickets to the Test match who will be wondering what happens next? Once the situation has been resolved, we will advise them as a priority,” Sutherland said.

“Fans should simply hold onto their tickets until further notice.”

ACA Chief Executive Alastair Nicholson said: “After consulting with the players, we have communicated to Cricket Australia that the opportunity to farewell their team mate is the priority, and the prospect of them playing the following day is simply too big an ask.

"The players are going through a grieving process and they must be afforded the opportunity to do so. As anyone can appreciate, this process doesn’t run according to a clock or a calendar.

"This is a unique situation and a unique response is required. We will continue to discuss options with the players and Cricket Australia over the coming days."

A meeting will be held early next week to discuss arrangements for round five of the Bupa Sheffield Shield which is due to start on Friday 5 December.

So, the new schedule according to Nine News is,
1st Test (Adelaide) from 9th Dec to 13th Dec,
2nd Test (GABBA) from 17th Dec to 21st Dec,
3rd Test (MCG) from 26th Dec to 30th Dec
and the final test at the SCG starting Jan 6th.

Seems fair enough with equally spaced first 3 tests and a week before the New Years test. Hope the players do get into a frame of mind where they can concentrate on cricket.

I have to say I like this schedule. The previous one was just wide apart for no practical reason. It was not like the sides would be playing practise matches in the gaps in between.

With Tests now starting from 9th, the question is that will Dhoni now feature in the first match ?

It's interesting because before the new schedule came out, Dhoni was supposed to join the squad on 9th December. According to new schedule, 1st test will start on 9th December so it will be interesting to see If he decide to play the first match or not. I also read in news that he was practicing in Chennai over the weekend.

Maybe, Kohli should have been given a chance in Captaincy. If Dhoni plays the first match then Kohli will have to remain as Vice-Captain.

I am not sure how true that news is because an article posted by cricket Australia indicates that it is still not confirmed that Dhoni will return by the time of 1st test.
Sources in Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) indicate that there is only a slim chance of him playing in the first Test at Adelaide. BCCI selectors are expected to discuss about Dhoni's availability on Tuesday, but the skipper himself will take the final call.

"He will be reaching on December 5 and it will take some time for Dhoni to get over from his jet lag. He will take some time to settle down, but Dhoni will take the final call once he reaches there. We have a long tour and players' fitness will be important," a top BCCI official has informed.
