Sadly, cricket has never been a level playing field in South Africa and there is no clearer case than that of Frank Roro, the Apartheid-era batsman good enough to be nominated as one of South Africa's ten greatest twentieth century players, despite the colour of his skin dictating that he would never play a first-class cricket match. Now, his name has been given to the Frank Roro Cricket Academy, located in the township of Alexandra, Gauteng, which will provide disadvantaged players with the best possible start in cricket.
Top-quality facilities
Some of the recruits take part in a practice session on the Nursery Ground.
The six-acre Frank Roro Cricket Academy boasts some of the best non-first class cricket facilities on the African continent. With the high-quality Howa Match Oval in use every day of the week for matches and middle practice, and the Majola Nursery Ground boasting a huge block of match-standard wickets for outdoor nets. Maintaining the grounds has also provided dozens of job opportunities for residents of the local area as caretakers, groundskeepers and fundraisers, amongst other things.
High-class coaching
Full-Time Coaches
Thami Tsolekile, South Africa's first black wicket-keeper, Mufuneko Ngam, the former South African fast bowler and Thandi Tshabalala, the Welkom-born off-spinner, have all signed on to be full-time coaches at the Academy. Tsolikile has been out of professional cricket since the end of 2015, and Ngam retired from the game through injury some time ago, but Thandi Tshabalala is a current player for KwaZulu-Natal. He expects to retain his semi-professional contract there while supplementing his income and gaining coaching experience at the Academy.
Part-Time Consultants
The team of part-time consultants includes Paul Adams, Vincent Barnes and Geoffrey Toyana. They all have experience of coaching at first-class level at the very least - Paul Adams is the head coach of Cape Cobras and an experienced Test spinner, Vincent Barnes has experience as South Africa's bowling coach and Geoffrey Toyana is the successful head coach of Highveld Lions. None has been pressured to leave their current employment, but all have agreed to help out when they have breaks in their schedule.
Playing mentors
Several current first-class players have agreed to join the Academy as mentors. As part of their role, they will visit the Academy to give talks to young players, as well as joining in with practice sessions and friendly matches. These mentors include: Omphile Ramela, Khaya Zondo, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Andile Phehlukwayo and Lucky Pangabantu.
Coach Education Programme
The Academy also runs an education programme for players and fans of all ages to get into coaching with CSA Level One and CSA Level Two courses run on-site. The Academy also refers aspiring coaches for CSA Level Three courses if they so desire.
