New Zealand Domestic Season

Franklin playing a blinder for Wellington. It seems though that batting first is the best tactic. More times than not the batting side wins.

Bloody Franklin, pretty much puts us out of the competition.

Yay he got out, now we might actually win a game. :)

Lol, the great man Daniel Vettori had an absolute shocker.

Sounds like it wasn't out, Franklin is a walker will be pissed if that costs us the game.

I'm gutted for Wellington. Sucks if it was a bad decision on Franklin.

Ok I've had a few minutes to calm down just a bit. :D

Good game in the end but I won't say great because the umpires might well have had a say in the out come of it. How good is Franklin though comes in when its 7-3 and basicly bats Wellington into an almost certain winning situation only for it to be screwed up by other incompetent batsman/umpires he should be walking into the NZ team even just for his batting. Again he shows he can handle the pressure with no problems at all.

Also has to be said that Nevin did a very good job today played his natural attacking game and it came off.

For me Merchant probably needs to be dropped for the T20's ideally for Ryder when hes fit. Bowling was better today but I don't think the skill level is good enough we really need to search for some new talent or steal them off other provinces.

Franklin should easily walk into the test team, when his bowling is fully functional.
The only problem with the ODI's is, Bond, Oram, Elliot, Styris all still play in them, so our middle order is reasonably settled.
Also since Vettori has come up the order to bat number six/seven now, he will have less opportunities.

For our test team maybe:

Top Three (1 - 3), Taylor (4), Ryder (5), Franklin (6), Vettori (7), McCullum (8), Three Pace Bowlers.

That would add a lot more depth to our batting, with McCullum all the way down at eight, also if any of those 4 - 8 batsman our left with Martin, they can all smash some quick runs, as they are all naturally aggressive.
In our bowling, we would still have three specialist pace bowlers, Franklin, Vettori, plus Ryder, and maybe Guptill if he plays. That still leaves us with plenty of bowling options.

In ODI's:

McCullum, Ryder, Guptill, Taylor, Elliot, Oram, Vettori, Four Bowlers

See there it is a lot harder for him to get in as the top seven are all pretty much gaurenteed of their spots
Unless they play him as one of the four bowlers, or Oram gets injured, I don't see an ODI place for him.

Oram shouldn't be in there ahead of Franklin unless hes playing purely as a bowler. He should be competing against Mills, Bond, Southee, Tuffey etc for spots and not all-rounders.

To be honest I reckon Elliott's run of form will come to an end rather soon and he will be the most likely to make room for Franklin even though hes been playing brilliantly you don't see the same sort of class as you do with someone like Taylor, Ryder, Guptill or even Franklin.

As for Styris I can't see him being around the Blackcaps for to much longer hes very much on his last legs it seems. These days he has enough problems scoring runs for Auckland let alone international cricket.

Styris puts too much energy into doing TV stuff now. Don't think he's putting enough effort into fitness and playing for Auckland and NZ anymore.

I agree with Franklin in the test side. Him at 6 would add a lot of balance and we just lost 2 bowlers so there's no issue with worrying about who to drop.

In ODIs it's tougher. Elliot is a sure thing though. He's performed outstandingly the last year. I like him. Again, maybe getting a bit too involved in the TV stuff, however he is injured unlike Styris and so long as his focus goes back to the Black Caps when he's fit then that's fine. Oram has bowled well enough I think to warrant a spot. He needs to get his batting sorted though. ODIs something like:

Ryder
McCullum
Guptill
Taylor
Elliot
Franklin
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Tuffey
Bond

Southee, N McCullum and Watling all possible backup options. Maybe Styris for the middle order.

Franklin would be able to focus on his batting and be the 6th bowling option and if he has a crap day with ball then oh well, but if he's bowling well or someone else has a crap day (like Oram) keep him going.

Quite a strong bunch of players really. Maybe play Watling over Oram even but he'd have to bat out of position which may not work well for him so Styris possibly. McCullum could move down but he's played well the last few tours opening. Watling obviously opens if Ryder isn't fit in time for Bangladesh. I wouldn't rush Ryder back for the ODI, it's more important he plays in the AUS tests and ODIs.

I'm not sure why Guptill automatically gets a test spot, he hasn't performed well in tests or even first class. He should make way for broom to bat at 3 with Watling and someone else to open, because IMO Guptill isn't suited to open. Possibly give McIntosh another go, because I can't really think of any other contenders.

TBH I don't think Guptill or Elliot should be any where near our test team...

I've also had a lot more time for Oram than some others have had, his ODI E/R is outstanding. I agree his batting has dropped off, but you would have him in there anyway.

I can't really argue with irottev line-up:

Is we get those 11 players fit, that would easily be one of the best one-day teams in the world.

Ryder (PT)
McCullum (wk)
Guptill
Taylor
Elliot (PT)
Franklin (6)
Oram (4)
Vettori (c) (5)
Mills (1)
Tuffey (3)
Bond (2)

It's really just the three AR's, Franklin, Oram, and Vettori, who need to sort out where each of them are going to bat.

Vettori is a better bat than Franklin..

Test team:

1. Watling
2. McIntosh/Guptill
3. Broom
4. Taylor
5. Ryder
6. Vettori
7. McCullum
8. Franklin
9. Tuffey
10. Southee
11. Martin

ODI:

1. Ryder
2. McCullum
3. Gutpill
4. Taylor
5. Elliot
6. Stewart
7. Vettori
8. Franklin
9. Mills
10. Bond
11. Tuffey

Problem with those teams is you are relying on Franklin to bowl more than he probably should if you can't fit Franklin into the top 7 you shouldn't be fitting him into your side hes a batting all rounder these days.

Have to bat first in T20 I feel. Northern made a hash of what shoulda been an easy chase. Good bowling and fielding Canterbury.

Nicol is the man! Nicol > Vettori haha.

irottev added 18 Minutes and 46 Seconds later...

What a thriller. Canterbury really screwed that up. Gutted!

Southee and Scott smashed it.

Wow what a finish Canterbury will be gutted and probably just about out of it now they will need to basicly win all their remaining matches.

Good win for Auckland as well, Hopkins showing some good form.

Kinda have mixed feelings on Wellington's likely draw given it was away from home and against an inform Otago side. A point is better than nothing (which would have been the odds on result) but we really needed a win to keep in touch with the leaders.
