New zealand's Tour Of India (Nov 17-Dec 07, 2021)

Slowly recovering the from the shock received once I turned on the TV on a lazy Sunday morning.... What's going on! Seems like 200 odd lead will suffice. Whatever the case, #JinxOut.... He needs to be benched once VK returns

Why does this surprise me? I should be get used to it.

I remember this happened with Pant too when he was hit on the hand and didn't keep. I feel given Saha has a stiff neck, he can't really move along with the ball while keeping. Not ideal, but don't feel India should be criticised for the move.

Genuinely feel bad for Wriddhiman. This guy is the "scapegoat".. may be not the right word but he is the one always under pump to perform or get axed. Pant adds better balance to the team for sure but look what this man doing today! I think keep him as first choice keeper for Home series and prepare K S Bharat. Pant is fit for Away series.

I agree with your Sentiment, that Wriddhi is a fighter. However, Pant already made a case for him to be the Home Keeper during England's Tour to India in the beginning of the year. Batted and kept well.

Can't field but comes into bat and then doesn't field again. Probably within the rules or whatever but feels like they've basically got 12 players - particularly as it is a wicketkeeper.

Would say the same if it was any other team.

According to the rules, the wicket-keeper is just a fielder like everyone else. A regular fielder can be substituted, the same applies for a wicket-keeper. So this isn't unfair.

Same for me. Would say the same thing for any other team apart from India. Hope the doubt is cleared. :)

I'll keep banging the drum, but I'd be happy to see teams allowed to make substitutions for injury or tactics through a Test match - maybe two subs as a maximum to keep things reasonable.

So to start, India goes with three seamers and two spinners, subbing out one of the seamers for Axar when it starts to turn. And if Saha is crocked, Pant or Bharat comes off the bench to cover fir him.

Pretty sure New Zealand would sub in Glenn Phillips for Ajaz Patel right about now too.

Further edit:

One imagines that for most teams the ideal subs bench would usually be a keeper-batter and a spinner who can bat a bit. So to amuse myself I've made a list:
:afg: Rahmanullah Gurbaz & Qais Ahmed
:aus: Peter Handscomb & Ashton Agar
:ban: Nurul Hasan & Nayeem Hasan
:eng: Jonny Bairstow & Liam Dawson
:ind: Sanju Samson & Axar Patel
:ire: Stephen Doheny & Andy McBrine
:nzf: Glenn Phillips & Mitchell Santner
:pak: Sarfraz Ahmed & Mohammad Nawaz
:saf: Heinrich Klaasen & George Linde
:sri: Dinesh Chandimal & Ramesh Mendis
:wi: Shai Hope & Rahkeem Cornwall
:zim: Richard Mutumbami & Tendai Chisoro
Of course that's a silly list that doesn't really mean anything, but I do think it could lift the standard of Test cricket a bit. It might also be useful in domestic cricket to develop spinners a bit and keep standards a little higher

I think at halfway (when both teams have batted once) a substitution would be fine because they game is essentially even.

I'm certainly not saying India have done anything wrong here. I know Tim Southee picked up an injury (not seen much of the match) but has he been fielding for the majority of that second innings? Or does he just come on when it's his turn to bowl?

I have always felt having a faster outfielder is the same, so the change in rule for the keeper that came some years was reasonable. I liked the concept of Super Sub, because it was a legitimate of replacing a player within a match.

I agree with Ashwin, in that if there are certain regulations, use it as long it's a legal part of the game. I would've said the same if it were any other team too.

Agreed. I have been rooting for substitutes since Lockie injured himself in the test match against Australia when NZ last toured Aus, they lost so much of their planning due to that one injury.
