New zealand's Tour Of India (Nov 17-Dec 07, 2021)

The umpiring this match has been poor to say the least. Nitin Menon having his worst game as umpire, Virender Sharma has had these kinds of games before.

Ravi Shastri has a higher Test average in India than Ajinkya Rahane.

Was going through the cricinfo commentary. It appears that Young's decision was a wrong one. Had he used the DRS, NZ would have been 4-0. Now this is where I feel the whole point of having a DRS is defeated. A player is reluctant to use it for fear of losing it. Therefore, instead of having a limited number of reviews to use, I feel there should be another system in place. Something like - dock x runs from the batting team/add x runs to the opposition team's total in case you lose a review.

In the end a wrong decision was made and there's evidence to back that claim. In such cases, wouldn't it make sense to have the 3rd Umpire overrule the onfield decision (at least have this option if DRS reviews continue to be limited in nature)?

Completely agree, but I feel time constraints have contributed a lot to the limiting the number of reviews.

I beg to Disagree buddy! The solution you've provided still has that essence of fear. Rather keep it simple. let's increase the DRS window to 60 seconds. And make Umpires accountable for making wrong decisions. The reason is, in today's DRS-driven cricket, Umpires seem to be taking it easy! maybe a cut in their match fee for such a terrible outing like Nitin Menon

Wouldn't hurt to do a trial run.

Yes, it still does have a fear factor but it's definitely of lesser impact than losing a review. Teams can afford to make up for the run loss but what can you do when one loses 33% of your reviews in one go.

Holding umpires accountable via match fees? Not too sure about that. If anything, that would make them more conscious of the fact that they might lose money.

And how in the world were we 50-5 when the opposition's nightwatchman is showing you it's not that difficult to bat on this surface. Has our batting degraded that badly?

Could do a trial eventually.

I think NZ bowled very well, we have too but many chances have not come. The pitch has lost bounce.

their intent doesn't show that!
The intent in the first session is ought be missing traditionally. Once set, the scoring rate will increase. Although I agree Draw looks likely, I wouldn't put it past them to go for a win if they have 5-6 wickets left and 100 to get in the last 25 overs.

Not always about batting.
But hasn't that been the case for the last 2 years? Kohli/Pujara/Rahane not in the best of forms? There's been a fighting knock once in a while but where have the big scores gone?

Age factor/ Lack of form/ Difficult conditions / quality of pitches..... One of these factors have always come in to play.

Still can't believe that Somerville actually got out caught in the deep on the very first ball of the post-lunch session with the kind of knock he played!
