Nov 25-29: 1st Test: Australia v England at Brisbane

I believe Doherty and Smith should both be in the team in place of Hauritz and North respectively. Doherty has a low economy rate and spins the ball more. Smith is a more consistant batsman as we have seen in his few intenrationals he regularly scores 30's and grabs a couple of wickets per match. North will get 4 scores below 10 and then get a ton he is just not consistant enough.

That would be how I would go but the selectors appear to have a thing for the type of spinner they have in the side. North being an offie would now take preference since Doherty can take the ball away from the right handers.

But really if it comes down to battle between them, it has to be Bollinger. Would be stunning if the selectors would even have to think twice about Doug coming straight back into the team.

I have a feeling the selectors are leaning towards Siddle.

No mate , selectors won't drop Bollinger. What would be their logic for dropping Bollinger?Wonder if selectors are still considering playing 4 quicks.I guess not with Doherty in there and Chappell's comments.Bollinger havent done much wrong and alot right since being a regular in the Australian team.He had that poor series in England(only 2 games) and thats just about it.Not to mention Bollinger is a much much better new ball bowler than Siddle imo.

^Not only that but Watson seems in pretty good nick with the ball, just coming off a 5-fer and a couple of years ago he took 7 at the Gabba for the Bulls. If they play 4 quicks, then Watson is basically wasted, and you'd be seeing a lot more North. Just depends what the captain and selectors want really:
20 overs a day of Doherty and 10 of Watson vs
15 overs of Siddle and 15 of North (15 because of overrate pressures:))

Take your pick Ricky.

Hmm , well I'll have 20 overs of Doherty and 10 of Watson instead.I think selectors would have strongly consider 4 bowlers if Harris was fit.

You are forgetting who we are dealing with. These are the same selectors that have kept North and Hussey through all their crap. Siddle has basically walked back into the team everytime he returns from injury.

The aussie selectors have done it again. If they were going to drop Hauritz it should have been a long time ago. Is Doherty seriously going to debut in this series or will Smith be the first choice spinner, I mean its an absolute shambles. What the heck has Doherty done?

Average around 26-27 in his last 7-8 games. Its not like anyone ( apart from O'keefe) is knocking the door down.Smith wont be or atleast shouldnt be the first choice spinner cause he is a batting all rounder whose bowling isnt good enough just yet.

I think its pretty unfair really on Doherty chucking him in there (thats if he plays) for his debut in an Ashes series. Or is Smith now going to play, or will they go four seamers?

I agree with you 100% on this one. The only thing that this is going to do is make both players more nervous and on edge. Im not a fan on wholesale chopping and changing, I mean we saw English sides do this throughout the 90s and early 2000s, where theyd axe half their team and replace them and so on and all it did was create instability and uncertainty. I believe players play more confidently and are more focused when they are reassured of their position; you only change if its for the better. Is Xavier Doherty really that much better, his first class average is the same as Hauritz's! I think this decision should have been made at the start of last summer..the Ashes are won a year before the series is played, we saw that in 2006 with England's preparations. The Aussie selectors should have decided on their choice of spinner at the start of last summer and stuck with them. Mind you I thought the India series was always going to count against Hauritz; he copped a bit of a hammering but it was always going to be difficult for him. India are the best players of spin in the world and Hauritz didnt have alot of experience in bowling to them. In saying that he didnt show much in terms of strategy. I just get the feeling that the expectations were a bit too high; hes not shane warne and to be fair no one ever said he was. So therefore it should be no surprise that he didnt roll through India.

I don't think Doherty really cares whether it's unfair or not. I reckon he'll do the job just fine. But don't expect too much from him though. He won't single-handedly win the ashes.

They should. But the selectors & Ponting's love affair with picking useless tweakers means a spinner will play of course.

Yeah they are completely better off using four seamers, they shouldn't just play a spinner for the sake of it. Im thinking they might not play one at the Gabba but will probably in the following tests.

Australia's selectors have pretty much turned into the England selectors of the mid 90s giving someone a game on the back of a few decent performances then just throwing them into the biggest test series in the eyes of both teams whilst retaining others on the back of past experiences. Whereas England's have really matured from their trigger happy past and now slowly bed players in ie Finn playing against Bangladesh rather than going to OZ land completely unprepared. Hell they've even given plenty of playing time to the back up players such as Bresnan.

Needless to say if they continue with these odd selections they could find themselves in the doldrums for a few years even if they do have the talent to be doing better.

If only the selectors would think like this.

War added 3 Minutes and 7 Seconds later...

Watson
Katich
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Haddin
Smith
Johnson
Siddle
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger

Is really the side I'd be playing.

You know this line-up would be perfect if:

- Haddin was Gilchrist/Sangakkara/Stewart like 45+ average top 6 player.

- Smith was a Vettori/Sakib Al Hasan type spin bowling all-rounder.

But obviously given that those two aren't of that quality AUS can't play this line-up for the Ashes. Maybe in the next year or two such a line-up could play if Haddin & Smith develop like that however, would give AUS so much bowling options.
