Nov 25-29: 1st Test: Australia v England at Brisbane

Rubbish. If the selectors didn't think the young guys could deliver, then how the hell did Phil Hughes or Steve Smith get debuts in the last year or 2? How does Usman or Ferguson get into the 17 man squad? Why does Peter George get picked for India, or Josh Hazlewood for the ODI series in England this year? You're just regurgitating the same boring old - 'oh the selectors suck' drivel.

If the young guys WERE ACTUALLY KNOCKING DOWN THE DOOR I might pick them. Usman's a young kid who's made some runs yes, but he's just OK vs spin, he's doing nothing in OD cricket which the selectors like to see, and he's done nothing in the last couple of games which was THE time to make your run and prove your form is good. Ferguson's made a century too, but geez his FC record is a bit patchy and to me he needs to prove he can consistently rack up 4-day runs. Luckily for the young guys though, Mike Hussey is doing as much as possible to be dropped. Marcus North still makes a random century here and there and has a good record v England - harder to drop him.

Yes I know Hughes was picked, but thats cause he was scoring a truck load of runs that it would be ridiculous if he wasnt picked. All the other guys you mention with the exeption of Smith are right down the peckig order.I just feel thats its abit too hard for the young guys (who are good enough )to get into the team, that worked back when we had a solid team but rebuilding is needed.I think thanks to Chappell we will now start to see the door open for young players who actually deserve to be in the playing 11 and not just be in the squad waiting for an injury to get a game.Had North been 21- 24 he would have been shown the door already imo( aren't you tired of hearing the excuse of he is an experience player who offers a bowling option). If you think Australia selectors are not too conservative in picking young players you are deceiving yourself.

Ok fellas take two on our 1st Test Ashes squad. Some interesting gossip is lurking about now.

Hauritz cut a forlorn figure after the game. Speculation was rife he had been summoned into a back room by Ricky Ponting and his right-hand man Michael Clarke and delivered bad news, a claim emphatically denied by Ponting.

Writing on wall for Hauritz as Bolly blows it for Blues

Which I believe could be due to

According to observers at the SCG yesterday, Hauritz was as white as a sheet when he emerged from a 10-minute meeting with Ponting after the Shield game.

Hard to know what to make of it but if true then it does sound like he has been dropped. Anyway we will find out soon enough and won't have to worry about all this speculation anymore.

Yeah, Hauritz is out of the first test.

Wow just wow! I was wrong regarding them not making any changes. Foxsports stated before the squad was announced that Ponting would have the last say and clearly he wasn't happy with Hauritz and hasn't been since India that we know of.

Thank god Hauritz is gone, it's like a Cancer has just been healed :cheers

People seem to have short memories :rolleyes

Pakistan Test series? Even though there is rumour that was rigged. What about the last Ashes series? Hauritz was the leading wicket taker for the first few Tests from memory.

I'm disappointed to see him go from the side but I can understand why. There has been constant media pressure.

My prediction: Hauritz won't play again under Ponting's captaincy.

You know it man. But i fear another cancer virus may have been consumed by the selection of Doherty (although i can see the logic behind having a left-arm spinner).

Pretty dumb that Smith is in the squad, but i'm not surprised though. The selectors clearly over-rate him as a potential all-rounder. Really not sure what about his bowlin in the current game vs ENG could make them think he is test quality.

Haurtiz axing has nothing to do with media pressure. His axing is due to his failure since his recall vs South Africa 08/09 to do the main job of a test spinner, which is to be a wicket-taking threat on wearing 5th day wickets, againts good batting sides. Which he failed to do @:

- Cardiff 09
- Adelaide & Perth 09
- 3rd test vs NZ
- In India

Taking wickets againts a joke PAK team with all that internal turmoil, which even gave Marcus North a 6 wicket haul on a last day wicket with no turn. Proves how bad PAK where, rather than how well Hauritz bowled.

The man has been an utter joke bowler his entire career & should have never ever played a test. Him being dropped now is only good news for the AUS test team.

I don't know who I want to play more in the first Test, Doherty or Smith. I think the selectors will go with Smith because he has slightly more experience and can bat as well.

Also noticed there is no reserve batsmen.

Woot! Doherty playing, great move by the selectors for once.

This pic says it all

I just had a good lol at Smith's and Doherty's FC bowling records, and to think some of you Aussie's (looks at TumTum :spy) don't rate Vettori.
I can't really see either of them causing the English batsmen too many problems.

I don't think the selectors would have made all that fuss dropping Hauritz and picking Doherty in the squad only not to pick him. I believe the selectors see Smith as a batting all rounder at last so he'd be in the top 7.

Siddle v Bollinger will be interesting, still don't know which way the selectors will go on that one.

I believe Doherty and Smith should both be in the team in place of Hauritz and North respectively. Doherty has a low economy rate and spins the ball more. Smith is a more consistant batsman as we have seen in his few intenrationals he regularly scores 30's and grabs a couple of wickets per match. North will get 4 scores below 10 and then get a ton he is just not consistant enough.

Preferably both should play.

But really if it comes down to battle between them, it has to be Bollinger. Would be stunning if the selectors would even have to think twice about Doug coming straight back into the team.
