I don't think anyone here can really pass judgment on this unless they were in a room with the match referee and the umpires during lunch. It was shocking and I'll be hawking Cricinfo after the match since ESPN cuts off the Sky telecast as soon as the last ball of the day is bowled. With tea coming up, we may get some hint of what went on out there.

Pakistan seem to have just lost their killer instinct a bit, although with KP out, things may change. I don't see the English losing another wicket before tea, and I think they'll be able to wrap up the day without losing another one unless someone plays a stupid shot. As said by the commentators, Pietersen and Collingwood probably chose a ball that was about 300 overs old. :P

Still think 5 penalty runs is a joke, should be far more severe.

But, anyways back to the match, Bell and Colly in, they have to be there at the close for England to have any chance of survival now.
How can you make it more severe in game? Without stopping the game from going on?

Both then, you pedant ;)

Damn you KP you fool!

So careless!

Sohum, they've lost the killer instinct because the ball has stopped doing anything. Now swing very little spin for Danish.

I thought Strauss was very unlucky earlier, hit him well outside the line.

Yeah, but the decisions have really been up and down in this match. Even Kaneria had a few early on in the day that should have been given, including one in the first over of the match. Panesar was also unlucky. This match has been well-contested, but under the dark clouds of ... official decisions.

Pietersen you idiot! The Pakistan bowlers didn't know how to bowl at you, you had them on teh rack and then what do you do? Throw your wicket away by trying to play a daft glory shot.

Still, Bell and Colly need 100's to save us, and Chris Read will hopefully chip in with anouther fifty at the end.

The penalty is more than 5 runs. The penalty is England getting to pick a ball that neither swings, seams or spins which they did. Plus of course later repercussions.

Interesting, what sort of 'later repercussions' are you talking about?

Speaking of repercussions, Atherton wasn't penalised that severely for rubbing dirt on the ball. John Lever also from England however, was banned for life. John Lever got caught rubbing vaseline from his face on the ball.

Well, if it's proved that the ball was tampered with (and that's a big if for me at the moment) I believe that Pakistan can be fined although I was actually referring to the wider stigma.

There is no proof yet, lets wait and see....Pakistan/England series just doesnt go on without a controversy does it ?

Care to elaborate more ;)

Pakistan should come out imo, and show that they're innocent instead of sulking.

Does anyone know of the implications of Pakistan not coming out? Andrew do you know?
