Neither has Clarke.
He was robbed though. I was sat at home watching the game when he was on 97 not out and he had Ed Giddins at the other end, he smashed the ball for four, but foolishly, sprinted through for the winning run. It was a technicality, the ability is there.

Dimitri Mascarenhas, saw him bowl during Hampshire's cup run..maybe a bit slow for international cricket?

Mostly bowled medium-pace off-cutters..

Very tidy though

Paul Collingwood isn't the fastest either, so I don't think speed is an issue.

I'd have Ian Bell in the team as an allrounder ahead of clarke..

Bell also (amazingly) has been bowling stats..

true, but colly is a WAY better batsman.

Bell is far from being an all-rounder, but you'd be surprised with how many batsmen struggle against medium-pace in One Day cricket.

Why did England name Rikki Clarke in the squad!!!??????

Becase they feel he is worthy of a place as an all-rounder. I think he has performed well at county level, but I just don't think I can cut the mustard at International level. Let's hope he proves me wrong though.

that was my point...Bell is no where near an allrounder..but even he has better stats than clarke, and is obviously a better batsman.

I think most the successful bowlers in ODI cricet these days are medium pacers and spinners..

Fast bowlers seem to get reamed.....

I rememeber Ealham being pretty useful playing for Eng with his "dobbers".

Clarke this season in One day cricket:

Batting: 156 runs at 19.50, highest score 40.
Bowling: 3 wickets at 76.00, best bowling 1/26.

And that's good enough to play for England? Don't make me laugh.

Those stats explain it all really. I don't need to say anymore.

Stats don't tell the whole story, or else Clarke would be in the Test side with his average of 15 with the ball. Care to name an alternative rather than just criticising the selection?

I'm just surprised that someone took it seriously.

For me, Bopara is a decent all round cricketer, but nothing more than average at the moment. Yes he takes wickets, but so does Ian Bell at County Level when he gets a bowl. I think we need to look at good players as a specialist, rather than the average all round players. I think our ODI side should be made up of players who are good at one aspect of the game at least. Rather than average at all aspects. Hence, why I'd rather see an Ed Joyce in the side for his batting, rather than Bopara.

I think that Bopara is a far better bowler than Bell.

Bell 47 FC wickets in 100 matches, Bopara 44 wickets in 45 matches.

Stats as of CricInfo.

He sometimes is first change for Essex.

Only in recent years after he's got over his injury problems. At the end of the day, to replace Flintoff, who bats at number 5 or 6, you need a batsman who can bowl a bit, rather than a bowler who can bat a bit. If he batted at Number 8 or something, I'd probably say that we needed a better bowler, but as it is, we need someone who can bat.

Only players that the selectors have overlooked though. There are very few all rounders in county Cricket who can bat and bowl to a decent level, unless we manage to convince Sean Ervine to play for England. I admit it's not ideal, but then it very rarely is. In County cricket, a top six batsman who bowls pace, apart from Clarke and Collingwood, there is literally nobody.

Ervine is far too expensive as a bowler.

I didn't realise Chapple had been ommited from the squad, that's shocking!

Clarke sucks in OD cricket btw. Better in FC cricket but not good enough for our ODI team.

well with those stats..er..anyone...

I'd love to know how the selectors can justify selecting someone with stats like that.

It's very shocking indeed; His long overdue call-up to the Engand squad will have to wait until another injury crisis.

It's simple really, the England selectors don't know a good player when they see one. They are poor selectors.

Cork
Mascarenhas (He may have not socred a OD hundred but he does bat at the end and has 18 50s to his name.
Luke Wright (young but has done well for us)

or a spinning all rounder.

yardy
Dalrymple.

Clarke isn't good enough, his bowling does not put him in the category of all round status.

http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/england/content/player/11724.html

Not good enough bowling stats in FC and/or OD for me.

Mascarenhas has outbowled Warne and Tremlett at Hampshire.

actually Bopara's stats are quite impressive this season...

16 wkts @ 26.41
398 runs @ 49.75 high score 101*
