How's that team?
Beautiful. Except Asif isn't available due to injury. So we'll have to do with Gul. He can be effective if he gets his line and length right. Also, I'd give Butt another chance if he does well in the next warm-up match.

Oh. I thought Asif was available from the second test. :-(

Afraid not. It would have made our bowling attack half way decent. Niazi is in the squad as Asif's replacement. Here's the article on Cricinfo:

http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/engvpak/content/current/story/253547.html

Just looking at Taufeeq Umar's stats. In the 24 matches he has played, he's averaged over 40 with 4 centuries (one against Zim and Bangla, and 2 against RSA). Sounds like a better choice than either of our openers.

They seem to rate Umar on his player profile.

Still risky with 2 left handers at the top.

What is it with Lefites opening?

England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia all normally have 2 lefties opening.

Personally I wouldnt have minded getting the U-19 WC Final hero Anwar Ali to have a go in the swinging conditions in England... good experience, enthusiasm of youth, and no way in hell can he be any worse than that idiot Sami. With Shoaib and Rana out injured, Shabbir out probably for good, we are playing our fourth choice bowlers anyways. Sami has had more than enough chances and it just seems he has some massive blackmail material on all the selectors that they are not dropping him for good.

And for the people asking for Butt to be replaced by Taufeeq Umar, I really think we need to negate Hoggard with a right hander and a right/left combo up front. Maybe Faisal can open? I really wouldnt want Akmal in that position since he needs to concentrate on keeping and he provides more stability in the tail.

Why are you dissing Sami and Gul?

Why isn't Shahid Nazir being considered?

Agreed. He played a very gritty 48 when Pakistan needed him to, and as I said he handled Monty pretty well when Inzi and MoYo struggled against him. Of course Monty was the man to dismiss him. :p

Inzi and Yusuf struggling against Monty???

Is that an exaggeration?

He's probably dissing Sami because he's rubbish, a test average of 48, he had a good debut and everyone has heaped his ability since.

When the ball was gripping yesterday most batsman were struggling against Monty, unfortunately his line and length wasn't right for a fair bit of it.

Monty bowled several scorching deliveries that didn't get wickets.

Another disappointing performance by our openers. Bright spot for me was Niazi. He picked up 2 for 35 in 8 overs. Not overtly impressive, but better than the rest.

He's a class act, but I don't think you can read too much into it, or else I could say that as Peters scored 142 against your attack that he could do a good job next Thursday.

I read on Sky Sports News today that Shoaib Akhtar may be fit for the third test, although I think that Pakistan are just being optimistic.

It would be a huge boost for Pakistan should he return though; England should look to win the second test against an Akhtar-less attack.

EDIT: Oh no! During today's County Championship game between Kent and Lancashire, Andrew Flintoff only bowled two overs before walking off. He is said to be experiencing 'discomfort' in his left ankle.

Could we be anymore injury ravaged?

Freddie looks to be out of the Second Test as he pulled out of his CC game today with discomfort in his Left Ankle.

His advisors weren't very clever, he should've had the bone fragments removed asap, the longer you leave them the longer the recovery process.

At least Ian Bell has more time to prove his worth. We will miss Fred's bowling once again though.

I'd like to see Chapple come in for Plunkett, as Chapple can bat Number 8 and is a very consistent bowler.

But Fletch thinks that anyone over 30 shouldn't be allowed to start their careers late, with occasional circumstances.

I would love to see Chapple play, and i've been wanting him in that test squad for ages, but as you said, Fletch isn't going to give a 32 year old a go. But you never know; Udal made his debut at 36.
