Phillip Hughes

He will not be as good as he could be. Look at Alastair Cook, got 200 against Australia, everyone thought he was going to be amazing, but got found out.

when's this then?

gotcha, thought ya meant a double century in 1 innings

He did. For Essex in 2005 in a tour game.

As for him being found out, that's a bit harsh Lee. He's not going to be Bradman fair enough but who is. He's been through a pretty shocking run without a century and still averages 43.

Lol at everyone.

You say it's too early to say he's going to be great and will get found out, but it's just as easy to say it's too early to call him overrated and say he will get found out. It's amazing to see the amount of people calling it stupid to say he's going to be a legend and making it sound like it's the most obvious thing in the world hes going to get found. That is ridiculous because you can't be so sure he will get found out.

If he starts working on the weaknesses in his game now, because he has another 17 years left in him he will be a legend.

Hughes has got off to a great start, he should be able to average around 50 in Tests.

His first class average is well over 50, and that should give you a rough idea of what to expect in Tests.

He is only 20, he may not improve to Bradman like levels (but seriously, who will?), but he should be able to at least maintain an average of 50 for the rest of his career.

Oh, and aussie_ben, can you please stop going on about Hayden, I know you are only doing it to be annoying, but people are tired of it, it was funny for a while, but now you are flogging a dead horse.

As for Sehwag, I don't know why people call him overrated. Are there some official ratings somewhere that give him a 90 when he should in fact be rated as an 85?

Hughes is overrated in my opinion. Seems unsure on short balls and hasn't impressed me by his play against spin but, big but, he did play extremely well in the last test match and is good enough to suceed at this level.

He is great on the short ball. His cut is one of his best shots and he plays it even better against spinners. Hiss unorthodox batting style means he can cut and sweep spinners very well.

When its short and wide he can cut, but whenever the ball is directed at his body he has struggled in the test series. Couple of gloves down legside and was fending it off a bit.

Look at Jaques was a star when openingfor aus with Hayden now due to injuries an form he cant get back in.

Ofcourse its too early to tell how he will end up or how long he will last.
He could hit a form slump get dropped an never make it back.
You never know what will happen.

But right now he has done fantastically for a 20 year old in his first series against the =best team in cricket.
He needs to work on his batting against spin, infact the entire Aussie team needs to work on there batting against spin no player or team should be dominated by a bowler like Harris
When he wasnt getting wickets he was going at less than 2 an over, thats pathetic batting.
What happned to the aussies that used to use there feet to get to the pitch of the ball or the team that smashed spinners out of the attack.

Hughes has done very well in his 2nd Test match, broken some long-standing records, kudos to him.

As Themer pointed out, some of the well-directed short stuff he didn't look particularly comfortable with. Steyn and co.'s lack of consistency in bowling sustained wicket-taking spells at Hughes in the first two Tests, and a bit of luck with Hughes' 1st Test 2nd innings, meant that Hughes didn't get dismissed as a direct consequence of well-directed short balls. Nevertheless, opposition bowlers the world over would've seen this and may well itching to have a go at Hughes in the near future.

Interestingly, he got out twice to Harris in both innings of the 3rd Test. That provides another question mark, how does he fare against left-arm finger spinners? Or high-class spinners in general?

As others have said, I agree on the fact that its way too early to judge Hughes - he simply hasn't played anywhere near enough matches for people to make their mind up about him. I'd like to see how he fares in the upcoming Ashes matches on England soil vs. the swing and seam merchants - Anderson, Broad, Harmison et al. And beyond the Ashes, how he fares in other parts of the world and their varied conditions (e.g. against high-class spin bowling on subcontinental pitches).

Only time will tell, but it'll be interesting to watch how this kid goes :)

it's too early to say how he'll develop. there's a young cricketer thread and it's notable that most of the guys in it are 4 years or so older than hughes.

he looks gutsy and determined to me, but technique wise he lacks compared to duminy for example and we've yet to really see if he has the hand eye co-ordination of ryder or ab de villiers. even though, de villiers apart, he's arguably preformed better than them.

mind you, if he turns out to be a graceless hayden clone australia won't mind.

great point. 3 times over the series, and they brought harris on very early considering the conditions and how highly they rate harris compared to their seamers in that last test. figured out how to get him a bit perhaps.

mind you if he's been test himself against mcgain and hauritz for the last couple of years it's understandable he's not going to be quite up to facing spin yet, young guys learn fast though so I wouldn't say it's a clear weakness.

Most logical post of the thread. :hpraise

The issue is with people calling him better than players who have played 100+ more tests than him.
