I will be controversial now by claiming that the AI use their own set of fields which are not any of the defaults and the game switches between these of which there are under 10 in total for all types of bowler.

I think you are right: I came across a list of AI fields somewhere during one of the patches: about 10 in total.....

Yeah you will come across them if you bowl as both teams. They will be under the team you use second. I think there are 2 test pace fields, a couple of ODI ones and some T20 ones. They are named along the lines of AI_Test_pace or something similar.

I use them quite often as they are better than most of the default ones. The AI seems to switch between these same fields regardless of the format and there appears to be no moving of a single fielder to plug gaps or to block scoring areas which is disappointing.

Can you see these fields on PS3 or they are only accessible on PC version? If yes, I would have to start a tour/tourney, start a match, save & switch sides, and bowl and these fields should appear along with the preset default ones?

I'm on PS3 so yeah, I have a slight feeling that just selecting to control the away team in a tournament will bring up these fields. Only one team will have them minus any custom fields you may have created.

That news re AI fields makes it worse - somebody thought all those silly mid-off/on/point fielders to a pace bowler was legit.

It explains a lot about the AI field setting silliness.

I'm surprised you use the AI fields though - I have almost never seen the AI set a field that seemed remotely appropriate/reasonable.

Look at the bright side. Now we know that all Big Ant have to do is change small no. of default fields and we should be fine. But how Big Ant came up with those fields while nailing nuances of the game at the same time remains a mystery to me. All I can think of is that most of the design/development was done in Australia and the default field sets module was outsourced to Malaysia or some such place which didn't have much clue about cricket.

The main one I used was a slight variation of "attacking 6" which is the standard field I use for the pacemen anyhow albeit with the two legside fielders moved, one to silly mid-one and the other to deep square leg. There's another default field I tend to use, I think it's "attacking 4" again with a couple of changes. Besides these two I just use my custom fields especially for spin as I have yet to find a default field that was of any real use for the spinners.
