Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

GC 08: Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Hands-On

While it's still the best-playing football game on the market, there's no doubt that last year's Pro Evolution Soccer disappointed many fans of the series. Unimpressive visuals, annoying gameplay tweaks, and a myriad of bugs (particularly on the PlayStation 3) saw the game slip dangerously close to relegation. However, Konami has gone on record saying that this year's iteration will fix the problems with last year's game, taking more advantage of current-generation technology while restoring the gameplay to its former glory. We got a chance to play the game for the first time to see if its promises look set to be delivered upon with the 2009 version.

First impressions of the game are good. Konami has upped the ante and created a menu system that's easy to navigate and makes better use of imagery and animations. The same awful J-pop music remains, but at least some effort has been made to improve the visual presentation. On the pitch, the player likenesses are now even better, particularly with star players such as Christiano Ronaldo. That said, the game is still some way off the visual fidelity of FIFA, so we'll have to see how much more it can be polished in the run up to release.

The noticeable changes to Pro Evolution 2009 come in the form of feature enhancements and new gameplay modes. In the former category, there will be an expanded player-editor mode in which you'll be able to add logos to kits by importing them from an external device. The PC and PlayStation 3 versions will offer USB data drive support, but it remains to be seen how this will work on the Xbox 360. The thorny issue of licensing remains in Pro Evolution 2009, and with EA eating up all the official data through its exclusive deal with FIFA, there's no end in sight for the made-up teams in Konami's game. Two teams from the English premiership will feature official names and sponsors, but we couldn't get Konami to tell us who they are. However, Konami did tease us with the news that a major European competition will be officially licensed in the finished game. We're not allowed to announce which competition, because of an embargo, but we expect that fans will be pretty excited by the news.

The big new gameplay mode for Pro Evolution 2009 is Become a Legend mode, in which you'll pick an individual attacking player and take him through a professional football career. If you perform well as part of a team, you'll attract offers from other clubs, but if you lose the ball and fail to set up goals, you'll receive a low mark at the end of the game. Cynics might suggest that this closely resembles FIFA's Be a Pro mode, but Konami assures us that the Pro Evolution equivalent has been around for some time in the Japanese Winning Eleven series. Unlike in FIFA, though, you can't call for the ball when you want it, which makes the mode more challenging than we initially expected. If you're playing for a lowly club, you're limited by your teammates, while your lack of tactical input means that you'll end up sitting on the bench for some games.

The gameplay is where it's at, and Konami says that it's using Pro Evolution Soccer 5 as its benchmark in this regard. Pro Evolution 2009 certainly feels slower paced than last year's effort, with more on-the-ball control than ever before. Konami claims to have made the ball even more physically independent, meaning that it will even react to certain grass types and wet conditions. While we didn't get to play a game in the rain, we did notice some of the new individual tricks from certain more-skillful players. As in last year's game, certain top-flight players will be able to pull off moves all their own, and they move from tricks to standard animations very smoothly.

Konami boasted about its Teamvision AI system last year, but it really seems to be coming through in the 2009 iteration. We were impressed with how reserved your teammates are about passing the ball if you're not in a strong position, which encourages you to make more-intelligent runs. Some elements of the game seem slightly dated. For instance, your salary in the Become a Legend mode is paid in "P" points, though overall the new mode should be a welcome challenge for those bored by the master league.

Speaking of which, the master league has also been updated to more closely follow modern business dealings. If your players want to leave your club, they'll perform poorly on the pitch. The multiplayer elements have also been improved. You can now have a total of four players online, in standard ranked and unranked matches, and in the Become a Legend mode. Konami is aware that players didn't think the multiplayer element of Pro Evolution Soccer 08 was up to scratch, so it has promised more-advanced features, such as the ability to upload replays from within the Become a Legend mode.

We managed to coax more good news out of Konami: There will be a demo of the game for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the week of release. Make sure you stay tuned to GameSpot for all the information as we get it.

WENB have posted up their first vidcast expressing their thoughts on their playtest earlier this week.

It's a positive opinion of the game which goes along with majority of other playtests which have come out today.
No drastic improvements over PES 2008, but it plays smooth and fluid

You can view it on youtube, or download it from several mirrors

That's exactly what I wanted to hear, and that about them using the PES5 philosophy.

I mean, what I love about PES, is that its PES. The way it plays is just so addicting, the unpredictablity of it. If they revamped everything, it wouldnt be PES anymore, it would be something else. I want them to sort out the keepers, which it sounds like they have, the defence, which it sounds like they have, and the ball physics, which it sounds like they have. Those and the online were the only thing that let PES2008 down.

Basically, I want a graphically improved PES5, with a slightly slower tempo and better ball physics. I still think PES5 is a better game than any of the FIFA's, all you have to do is watch the AI running off the ball to see how far ahead it was at the time. Admittedly, FIFA is catching up, but why wouldnt it? PES found such a note of perfection with 5 its tried to improve on it, but only made it worse. If they return to that PES5 format in 2009, I'm sold.

So, after all the promises about a 'major overhaul', the only part that has hardly been touched is the part which needed the most work. The Master League. Thanks, Konami! You've had your chance, I'm buying Fifa 09.

Why change it loads? Once again, its what PES is too me. They said they've altered the way in which you buy players - thats all it needed. They've added this Legend thing, what more do you want to it really?

Because it's a boring, unrealistic and tired format that's been around too long and needs to be put out of its misery.

What do you suggest they do? They already have the League mode, where no transfers are not allowed to occur liscence reasons, and they cant really use another 'season' mode as it is again down to liscenses. I dont see whats wrong with the ML, it involves tiered leagues, domestic cups, European competition, a transfer market, training, friendlies, stat abilities etc.

I dont see what else they could a) replace it with or b) be allowed to replace it with due to liscence ties.

There only option is to enhance it, which they are doing this year with the Legend thingy and the transfer market.

I never really bother with Master League to be honest (nor do I bother with Fifa's manager mode either) so i'm not too fussed by it. I get my enjoyments from football games with the trophy modes and both offline and online multiplayer and that's another thing PES beats FIFA at hands down; multiplayer. The amount of hours lost and homework shoddily done due to having countless games with random team selections against mates is uncountable. It's just awesome. The greatest online gaming moment ever belongs to myself anmd Drewska when it was FC Twente vs Ivory Coast and I shot from the halfway line only for the ball to hit one of the Ivory players faces and send him flying back about 10 yards. That's something FIFA will never be able to produce lmao.

Simple, they could give us more leagues (made up, the modders can take care of that), or league slots so we can add our own leagues. Then let them be properly implemented into the career mode.

So, you don't think there's anything wrong with ML? Can you have a proper FA Cup? No. Can you have a proper League Cup? No. Can you have a proper CL? Again, no! Domestic Cups! Don't make me laugh, since when did you see a domestic cup that basically started at the last sixteen stage? Oh and I almost forgot: points instead of money for transfers! It makes it feel like a damn arcade game! As for tiered leagues, yes there are tiered leagues, as long as you're happy with your EPL being invaded by a load of no-marks from Greece or somewhere, because there is no bloody Championship! Let alone League One/Two!

MasterBlaster76 added 4 Minutes and 47 Seconds later...

The more I see of this the worse it seems:

Robotic animations + fully AI assisted controls + arcadey gameplay + Terrible player physics + awful tactics and movement + awful AI + a lack of teams + a lack of single player features + most likely the usual Konami awful online servers = Fail.

Here's a gameplay video:

Anyone with a few brain cells can identify that as unacceptable for a next-gen game...

This is why I'm going with Fifa 09, at least that has proper real world modes and no shortage of leagues/cups. I like Fifa 08 PC, I've only got the demo, but I've played it a lot and I really enjoy it. It feels more intuitive when it comes to pinging a long ball diagonally across the pitch, or into the box. You have to work for your goals, the defence is not easy to breach (please do not post any 'easy ways to score'), there's far more control over your player, thanks to the 'trick stick' , the ball doesn't sound like a shotgun when you just tap it and several other things.

If Fifa '09 improves even by a little bit (apart from gfx), then I'll buy it. The only way I won't buy it is if the demo's a disaster (worse than Fifa 08, God forbid!)

Three divisions? If you're right, that would've been just fine! Prem, Championship, League One. At least then there's some scope for some decent Domestic cups! Well, the event in Leipzig is on now, ends August 24th, so we should find out much more about PES 2009 (and Fifa 09 PC) by then.

As you said, Konami are lazy. All that has to happen is for EA to give the PC a proper NG version of Fifa and then PES will lose sales by the bucketful. And it'll serve them right, they've been resting on their laurels for far too long.

I have to say though, I like the sound of 'Become a Legend', I wish EA would implement that into 'Be A Pro'.
