No one knew how it happened. No one knew how 11 people found themselves trapped in the town's Mental Hospital. But no one could say they were surprised. It had been a strange few weeks at the local Psych Ward, and the events that transpired meant that somehow, a mix of staff, patients and local bystanders were now locked in, with no way out.
One could say it all started with the death of Dr. Brown. An esteemed psychologist, Dr. Brown was the first, and till recently, the only head psychologist of the psych ward. He ran the whole hospital - if you could call it that. In actually, the 'hospital' was just an old abandoned Mansion, renovated and re-designed to serve this purpose. The handful of patients lived in one corner of the house, the staff (orderlies, nurses and janitors) in another corner, and the doctors in a section on the top floor. For the most part, the mansion would never hold more than 40-50 people at it's busiest, on a normal night it would have around 30, including the patients themselves.
When the house was opened, Dr. Brown was appointed the head psychologist. He was also, for the large part, the only psychologist present. He dealt with the patients one on one, and with the odd group session. The only help he recieved was when other psychologist or psychology students spent a few nights at the house for internship, or as a part of their studies. Dr. Brown believed strongly in doctor-patient confidentiality, so much so that even the senior nurses didn't know what was wrong with the patients. But they did what they were told, because Dr. Brown was a good man, who seemed very sincere about helping these patients.
Which is what made his death so inconvenient.
The autopsy proved inconclusive. Dr. Brown did show some abnormal chemical levels, but not enough to prove that he was poisoned. And given that Dr. Brown was in his 70s, it was decided that he must have died to natural causes, his body had broken down and that was that.
But the staff weren't convinced.
The next few days went okay...but 4 nights later, the strange noises began. A rattling coming from the patient's corners. Scratching on the walls. And then the moaning. The painful, long drawn, dreadful moaning.
At first, the staff thought nothing of it. Put it down to the patients missing Dr. Brown. But it continued on, for a week, until one morning...
The staff woke up, and realised that the downstairs rooms had been completely vandalised. Mirrors were broken, furniture destroyed, curtains and cushions torn open, vases broken...
They looked for signs of a break in, and found none. Then they checked the patients cells, to make sure they didn't leave someone unlocked. But they hadn't. The locks weren't even broken.
Naturally, the staff were frightened. And without Dr. Brown around, they didn't know what to do. So they called in the police, who promptly installed security cameras all over the house. They deduced that one of the inmates must have figured out how to unlock his cell from the inside, and lock himself back in - which, given the locks used, wasn't impossible. They adviced the staff to spend the night in the town, with family and friends, and to leave the house empty.
Next morning, they went in to check. The cameras had been taken apart. Not smashed open, but experetly taken apart, as if done by an engineer with years of experience. The pieces all lay neatly organised on the floor.
They went upstairs to where the recordings were being taped...only to find out that the room in question had been broken into. All the memory had been wiped, using a magnet that lay on the floor.
They checked the cells again. No signs of any break outs. They looked for fingerprints, they were all wiped clean. They tried to interrogate the patients...but as you can guess, that didn't go well.
Doctor Richard Hoffman, the resident head doctor, handed in his resignment. He had worked there for as long as the house was open, next to Dr. Brown, and decided he had had enough. He never liked the concept of working with the crazy, and tried his best to keep his distance away from them. The only time in interacted with them infact was when tending to injuries and illnesses. Otherwise he wrote out prescriptions for pills and kept the pharmacy in stock as per Dr. Brown's orders.
He had stayed there far too long. Now was his cue to leave.
And as fate would have it...that was the same day the new psychologist arrived. Doctor Joeseph Strylia.
He spent the first few days, looking around, talking to the patients, and getting settled in. And for a change...things were normal. No strange sounds at night. No vandalisms. Normal service resumed.
However, Strylia still hadn't gone through the files. He found out that Dr. Brown kept all the patient files locked away in a cabinent in the attic.
So Saturday morning he went to look for them...the cabinent was empty.
"AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!", came a scream from downstairs...
Joespeh ran down...to find Dr. Hoffman banging on the massive maple wood front door.
"THEY LOCKED US IN! THOSE LUNATICS LOCKED US IN!!!!"
"What? Are you serious?"
"OF COURSE I'M SERIOUS! DO YOU THINK I'M JOKING!!!
THEY'VE LOCKED ALL THE DOORS! ALL THE WINDOWS! EVERY SINGLE EXIT FROM THIS BUILDING!!"
"CALM DOWN RICHARD! The patients might hear you!"
"I DON'T GIVE A FLYING **** ABOUT THOSE MADMEN! WE'RE TRAPPED HERE! THEY TRAPPED US HERE! THEY KILLED DOCTOR BROWN!!!!"
Richard had all his luggage surrounding him, his forhead was moist and glistening. Today was his last day in the asylum, he was ready to leave...and now he was stuck here.
Joeseph wasted no time, and, while Richard continue to throw a tantrum, he rushed for the phone.
The line was dead.
The house had no internet access - they had never needed it before - and since it was Saturday, all the nurses and orderlies (those who hadn't already quit) weren't in the house. It was just him, Richard, and the patients. And whoelse happened to be stuck in this house with them.
This wasn't going to end well.
