Sri Lanka tour of New Zealand

These guys are still on line of breaking their own opening ODI partnership.

The Kiwis are really missing Bond and Mills, Mills was on fire during the Champions trophy and Bond is bond.

yep they really are missing thier front line bowlers...

Jayasuriya's hundred comes off 78 balls
23.1 Mason to Jayasuriya, SIX, hah! This is Jayasuriya we're talking about! What you can do, Tharanga, I can do better! Dropped in ever so short but he's onto it in a flash, pulling it high over deep backward square leg for six, and thats an incredible hundred for the master blaster! 78 balls! What a guy!

23.2 Mason to Jayasuriya, FOUR, murder! Short of a length delivery outside off, and what does he do? He goes on the backfoot and cuts it to square third man

23.3 Mason to Jayasuriya, FOUR, carnage! Fuller length delivery outside off, Jayasuriya comes on the frontfoot and lofts it to mid-wicket for four more, there's no stopping the Motera Marauder

and a stat from cricinfo...
Incidentally, Jayasuriya has tied Shahid Afridi for the most sixes in ODIs - a whopping 217

EDIT

Well there he goes, Jayasuriya caught Fulton bowled Franklin 111 (82)
and then falls Tharanga...
collapse?

Jayasuriya is out for 111 runs. What an innings of him.

well this is gng to put john bracewells ROTATION policy under scrutiny. A team like the All Blacks can afford to rotate players coz evn a 4th string ABs side can convincingly beat ne full strength opposition. The blackcaps have a very small pool of international class players and especially the bowling i mean adams, mason and gillespie just looked totally out of it to be honest. play the best 11 and when u start winning then rotate players i say.

but hats off to sanath. pple keep sayin he's pld and his best is behind him but really on his day he can take neone apart least of which is a inexperianced attack.

They can blame it on theirselves, since they wanted to experiment by resting some players. Jayasuriya is nearing his century.

Not really. We are resting Bond, but even so, Mills, Oram and Styris we can't help. All three key cogs in our bowling attack. Mills most of all.

Even if we had of played Bond, the others bowled absolute trash. Had Bond started things off on a more positive note then they may not have made the same great start. Bond and Mills don't bowl that trash. Every second ball was short and wide or down the leg side. No exageration, worst opening bowling ever. I expected a lot more from Mason but his bowling was disgusting. Same with Adams who managed to bowl better later on, but his inital bowling was inexcusable. Gillespie is the same, bowled absolute crap, too many no-balls.

Vettori was amazing, the ball never spun once. No spin whatsoever and even though the Sri Lankans were trying to score off him they couldn't and he had 2 catches dropped off him. McCullum to a hard one and the sub in the final over which was a sitter. He had a hard job as captain, both of our part time bowlers ended up getting cramp or strains from batting but both should be ok to play the next matches. It really doesn;t help when you have no back-up options.

Now it wasn't a good idea to pick such a bowling attack by the selectors, so they shouldn't be let off. But even so, the bowlers are there because they are in good domestic form. There is no excuse for bowling that crap. Nerves, meh, they should be able to bowl the ball in good areas, not short and wide to one of the most brutal hitters in the game. That's just stupid.

Credit to SL, they put away the bad balls. The game should have been a lot closer though, we lost the game with our bowling in the first 10 overs, even the first 20.

It was a bit boring in the end, but Sri Lanka managed to reach the target in exactly 40 overs. Great opening partnership of Sri Lanka. :)

At some point, these bowlers had to be tried. And against Australia probably wasn't the best idea. I would of rather they did it one at a time, but with Mills and Oram out and Styris's handy bowling it makes it harder to do that.

Franklin in the ODI arena still looks too risky for me, again he got hammered. At least he was opening the bowling here but if he didn't have then he would have been worthless.

He bowled too many bad balls, but the good balls were there. Just needs to work on consistancy. Usually he would be first change rather than opening the bowling.

We don't have that many others to use, even with our fully fit squad.

For the next ODI I really don't knw who to pick. I think Mason was the worst of them today to be honest. Maybe OBrian needs to be used. Maybe Chris Martin should be bought in.

If Astle or Taylor are out we may see Craig McMillan back which would be exciting. He can bowl some medium pace now.

This may sound ridiculous but I really wouldn't mind seeing Harris used with all the injuries and weak lower order.

Judging by what Mason and Co dished up today, Bond, Mills and Oram have got to be fit for the world cup for NZ to have a decent shot at it. And when Styris comes back I want to see him at 5, with Taylor at 4. Taylor may be young, but I think he's got the goods to hold an the innings together.
Oh, and credit to Jayasuiya, he really got stuck into some average/poor bowling.

You said every second ball was loose, was there maybe a little moisture problem? It's unusual that ever a crap bowler can't bowl two ball in the same area.

Geez how good is Sanath Jayasuriya, he's still got the goods in the ODI arena. :D

I think NZ just lacked experience really. Off the top of my head, they didn't have many players in that team who have played a lot of ODI's. I mean Vettori, Astle and perhaps McCullum (Sp?) would be the few that have established themselves as ODI players in my opinion. You can see what experience can do when Vettori bowled. Good to see Astle back in form though, but when NZ get everyone fit, I can see Fleming opening, as that middle order is just packed. Maybe something like:

Fleming
Astle
Taylor
H Marshall
Styris
Oram
McCullum
Vettori
Franklin
Mills
Bond

Which is a match for any team really. It's just a case of being physically able to get those players out on the pitch.
