Story The Origin Of Test Cricket:IvoBligh's XI in Australia;1882-83;3rd Test; Two innings in one day!!!

Taking a cue from the English,Evans open the bowling for Australia.Bates was virtually unplayable on the wet pitch.Evans proves the theory right by taking out the first three wickets to fall.
Barlow is the first one to go,beaten in flight and bowled.
Selby poor tour continues with another duc.He cuts Evans straight into the waiting hands of Massie at point.
The big one,Ulyett is beaten in flight, left stranded in the middle of pitch and Blackham is more than happy to effect the stumping.

At three down for 28, England are in trouble.Shrewsbury and Bates stage a mini revival but Shrewsbury is smartly caught by Coulthard off Garrett.
Evans takes a tumbling catch to dismiss Midwinter off Palmer while Garrett take a blinder at silly point.Scotton tries to pull Palmer but Garrett is alert enough to hang onto a beauty.

At 6 down for 92, England seem to be folding up easy.Bates keeping one end safe but the rest not quite upto the task.Australians are coming back at them real hard.Is it a case of too late? Are the Aussie looking at a prospect of going 2-0 down in the series.Even with a low second innings score, England are better placed on the strenght of their first innings and failure of Austalian first Innings.

Thats poor bating by by England too. Australia bowled really well. But Austrlia's bad first inning wont give them much of an advantage.

Wickets tumble on either side of the break.
Emmett's drive was snapped by Palmer off Garrett.Shaw was caught at the wicket but the best piece of fielding was provided by Horan.Pilling mishit one from Evans.Horan ran in and jumped in front to pluck up the ball inches off the ground.Thats some committment from Austalians.England innings end at 103 when Bates is the last man out, lbw to bates.(Sorry no pictures)

Evans has the best bowling figures ever.He has the figures of 7.1-5-14-5.England are shot out for only 103.That leaves a target of 259 for Australia.Patience hasn't been their greatest virtue thus far in the series but thats the only way they can win.Time is not a factor as this is a timeless test.

Thats very good bowling by Evans. Target is easy but according to the scores in this game, I dont think Australia will be able to do this.

Autralia started their pursuit quite cautiouly.Massie and Blackham added 43 runs in 19 overs before Blackham fell just before tea.He played across the line and was trapped leg before by Peate.Blackham taking up 58 balls for his 15.Massie has 24 off 64 balls. The important thing is that they have blunted English attack by not losing wickets upfront.Murdoch is in the middle.

Massie is the next one to go.The edge off his bat flies to Midwinters lap.Australia are 2 down for 70.Murdoch then takes charges and the score moves onto 107 before he pads up to ball off Bates and has to walk all the way back to the pavillion. He had a good partnership with Horan.

Evans gifts his wicket as Barlow takes a simple catch off Midwinter.By the end of the session, Australia have moved onto 120 for 4 off 45 overs. The pitch seems to have eased off considerably. This, coupled by resolve of the Australian batsmen have tilted the scale in their favor. They need 139 more to win.Horan is there with 19 alongwith Mcdonnell on 10.

Tragedy strikes as Horan is caught by Ulyett off Emmett.Thats fifth wicket down for just 142.However, Mcdonnell rises to the occassion. He has been talked highly of but today he shows a glimpse of things to come.He takes the attack to the English and gets to his 50 off just off just 60 balls with 10 fours. He is ably supported by debutant Jones.Australia are now at 198/5

I feel, the match might go in either way. A classic classic story. First classic meant for the storyline/presentation and second classic for the "cricket-classics" match. :)

Keep it up!

Mcdonnell and Jones combine and take Australia near to a great win.Jones, in a bid to go down in glory, mishits Emmett to Shaw who takes a tumbling catch. With just two runs to get, this proves to be too late as Garrett, facing his second ball, hits a big six to get a win, which at one stage seemed impossible.Mcdonnell remains not out at 90.

Wisden describes it as "a win of guts and determination over adverse conditions."Mcdonnell has played on the best innings ever. When Jones came in Australia were in a danger of folding up but apart from some early scares and nerves, he showed glimpses of great potential.

Although this was team effort, Garrett was adjudged Man Of The Match for his inspired bowling spell in the English second innings.

Inreal life, the third Test was even more one-sided. England got 188. Then Australia made 262, with Percy McDonnell making 147, Alec Bannerman 70, and no other batsman scoring more than 7! England again collapsed to 134, and Australia won by 6 wickets.

Australia v England 1881-82

Almanack home
1883 home

Played at SYDNEY, Friday, Saturday, Monday, March 3, 4, 6, 1882. Australia won by six wickets. It will be seen that neither Spofforth nor Bonnor played for Australia in this match. The Englishmen batted first, and after four of their best wickets had been taken for a few runs Shrewsbury played up splendidly, and was the principal means of the score being a good one. His batting was described as being absolutely free from fault. The commencement of the Colonists' innings did not point to the prospect of a large score, as when time was up on the opening day the three best batsmen of the eleven were out, and the score only 24, Bannerman and McDonnell being the not outs. Rain put a stop to the game early on the second day, and then the overnight not outs were still in, Bannerman with 59, and McDonnell with 72, the total being 146.

In continuing the innings on the Monday the wicket was dead, but in spite of that Bannerman added 11 to his score, and McDonnell no fewer than 73, although not one of the other five batsmen could succeed in getting into double figures. McDonnell's batting was extremely brilliant, but he was thrice let off. Bannerman played in capital style, and the two batsmen put on 191 runs while they were together.

Both sides found the wicket difficult when going in for the second innings. Shrewsbury batted capitally again and received assistance from Ulyett and Pilling, but when the second venture was over the Australians had only 64 to get to win; but Peate bowled magnificently, and before the requisite number were knocked off, four of the best batsmen among the Colonists were dismissed. The Englishmen were therefore defeated by six wickets.
