The second half certainly belonged to the English. They went for tea with the score sitting healthy at 251-4 off 60 overs. They owe it to the unbeaten partnership of 180* off just 25.3 overs between Read and Barnes.
Australia seemed to have it under control when the not out batsman Steel fell to another catch by Blackham off Massie. This bought in Barnes and the game changed on its head. Read played the sedate partner role while Barnes shredded the bowling. Read reached his fifty off 144 but Barnes caught up with him, reaching his fifty off only 57 balls, 9 runs later and was visibly excited.7 overs later, the last before the break, he raised his bat as he got to his hundred off just 78 balls. He smashed a six to reach the milestone. He became the first man to score a century in a session, this by far being the fastest 100 ever in Test Cricket and the first instance of the batsmen reaching the landmark with a six.
The youthful exuberance of Barnes has shifted the momentum England way and Read has provided the stable approach at the other end. The Australians have been taken aback by the attack and look clueless. The part timer, Bannerman was smashed for six fours in an over by Barnes and the drooping Australian shoulders show the effect this carnage has had. They need a plan and they need it soon.
BLIC do have a classic matches section which comes in black/white. The work and efforts which Somiya puts on this classic story and takes us to flash back and tries to entertain us with these stats really have no equal words to appreciate. They worth more & more than just typing those excellence here.
Thanks for your support guys.I bought BLIC07 last May in India.Tbh, I thought 10 test are enough on Cric02.So, I tried BLIC. I might toggle between games till TAOC is released.
Due to lack of comments, sometimes I do think about aborting but then I look at the number of views(which are quite good btw!) and I feel encouraged to go on.
Wisden would like to thank all the readers who have taken time off their busy schedules to appreciate our efforts in bringing the coverage of cricket .Our artists and illustrators are working hard to provide some photographs and not just only the bulletins. Our artists are using a technique that has been around for some time but is really catching on bigtime, called photography. We are taking photos during the match and taking batsmans charts, we are giving an illustration of the areas where a batsman is scoring his runs. This looks like a bird, probably a hawk's eye view.We hope this will catch up in the future.
The duo of Read and Barnes kept going after the break into the final session. Barnes reaches his hundred off 182 balls. A sedate effort compared to brutal savagery of Read. The partnership is worth 218 when Spofforth strikes. Read goes for an expansive drive and is bowled via the inner edge. The wicket falls at 304. Barnes add 37 runs for the sixth wicket before a misunderstanding costs him his wicket. He also like Read leaves to standing ovation.
Bligh is the next wicket to fall as he goes across the line to Palmer while Bates fails to fire and is leg before to Giffen. Tylecote is the last wicket of the day, cleaned up by Palmer.
A day full of records. Barnes and Read record their first centuries and share a new record of partnership for any wicket. Never before has a team scored so many runs in a single day, 400 to be precise. The Australians need to get their act together. After losing the first test, this was the tonic the English needed. They did lose a few wickets towards the end but it more because of batsmen trying to force the score rather than good bowling from the bowlers. Spofforth led the attack brilliantly but when he was out of the attack, the batsmen made merry. He is the one of the best of his trades and he demonstrated that fully today. Australia marched off the ground, their heads hanging. Their plan for tomorrow should be simple, get England out cheaply and bat to the best of their abilities. But for the moment they seemed to be buried under an avalanche of runs.
