Story The Origin Of Test Cricket:IvoBligh's XI in Australia;1882-83;3rd Test; Two innings in one day!!!

:laugh

Great update mate. Whisky was not involved  :p

Very nice mate, gave me a good laugh

Glad you liked it!!

You were right in one aspect though.Certain players of this era were well known for their love of booze. If my memory serves me right , one of the Englishmen Bates was a famous drinker who bowled out a team in his last first class innings, being drunk.so much so, his captain had to shoulder him out.Read this on cricinfo a couple of days back.
Lol...Nice little update there. Good that there are 4 more days in this test match to go:)

Thanks for your support and encouragement.

Bulletin

Australia squandered a great position to be allout for 141 after being 2/54 and then 3/81.The pitch seemed to be holding up allright. That was before the sun came out and cracked up the pitch.Ulyett made the most of it to finish with 5 for 29 off his 13 overs. This is first time he taken fiver in an innings in tests. And the way he is shaping, everone is sure that there will be many-many more.
After the early departure of Bannerman, Australia seemed to be doing all right until Ulyett and Steele got into the act. Steel finished with 3/29 off his 9 overs, his best return in Test Cricket so far.Murdoch had a sedate approach with 37 off 61 while Bonnor with his big frame bullied his way to 23 off 26 balls with three hits to the fence.Massie scored 24 off 29 with two hits to the fence and one over it. He forced Peate out of the attack. This proved to be blessing as ulyett led the attack brilliantly. Out of the rest, only Blackham provided some resistance with 24. Once he left at 122, the rest just folded for 19 more runs out of which twelve came off Jones bat as he struck three fours in three balls off Ulyett.
That leaves England a target of 152. The last time I checked, the odd were against England at 20-1.With the pitch favoring the bowlers more than the batters and the inspired Australian attack ready to hunt, England have their wok cut out. Perhaps it is time for Grace to covert his county form into runs at this level. Lyttleton looked quite worried in the players lounge. Grace and Barlow would be emerging soon from the lounge and they better fire, for their sake, for the sake of England and my 5 pounds I bet on them!

Such a low scoring match:eek: This is a great match. Will be interesting to see who wins this one.

Nice presentation:)

I wouldn't be surprised if England didn't make this total. If they can bat sensibly (and sobre :p) it should be easy.

Superb update mate, love this story :clap

Considering the first Innings England total, I am not too sure whether England can make it.. But, if they keep their patience level, this is definitely an achievable easy task.

Fantastic as always :clap

England overcome the elements and a spirited attack led by Spofforth to win the test by 4 wickets. In a match dominated by the bowlers, Grace struck a polished 61 off 80 balls to anchor the ship. Lyllteton then lashed a 46 ball off 40 to lead the team home.
England began sedately before Spofforth claimed Barlow for 13 out of a score of 34. A lot of expected from Ulyett but Horan hung on to a mishit off Spofforth and England were under pressure. Grace lost Lucas with the score on 57 and thats when Lyttleton walked in. And that was the time, when Spofforth took a breather. With the lesser bowlers on, Grace worked his way to a well made 50 off 68 balls. With the match slipping away, Murdoch called out for his tired workhorse Spofforth and he nearly turned the match around. Spofforth managed to just hold onto the catch from Grace and then Studd finds his stumps shattered by a Spofforth yorker. And then Spofforth became the first man to take ten wickets in a test when he catches Studd off his own bowling and England slip back to 6 for 113 and the scales tilted into Australias favor. But this proved to be a false flicker. Lyttletons calm assurance and Barnes lucky hits take England home.
Wisden says Like a phoenix coming back to life and destroying his enemies, Spofforth spread terror amongst the English ranks. Not leaving the job for someone else, he took three catches off his own bowling to set up an unlikely victory but was ill supported by his colleagues. The sight of the Demon, walking back to the pavilion defeated, confirmed off all things, he is mortal after all. At the same time, Grace transformed his county form to test level and showed what a force he can be."

The Match:

Australia won the first test convincingly by 200 to go one up in the series.Ever since England managed to squeeze out a win on cold august day, Australia had been waiting to get back. And did they get back!

England managed to restrict Australia to 156 on the first morning, in spite dropping as many as 5 catches. Mcdonnell and Bonnor are not the batters you want to drop catches off. Lucky for the Englishmen, Barnes was in a great form with the ball. He finished with 6/39 and was ablt supported by Studd with 3for 72.But for a 61 run partnership between Mcdonnell and Bonnor, the colonials would have folded easy. The two joined forces to take the score from perilous 6 down for 46 to 107.Had the English catching been more subtle, Australia would have collapsed for a lesser score. England managed to survive 5 overs before the rains came down. The rain relented late afternoon the next day and the English walked onto the field to continue their innings.

The ghost of the Oval 1882 seemed to be haunting the Englishmen who just managed to impove the Australian score by a mere 8 runs. The damge being inflicted by an innocuous Mcdonnell who finished with a career best of 5 for 60. Spofforth was taken to the cleaners and leaked off 57 runs from his 10 overs. But it was the English batting that left a lot desired. England slumped from 3 for 83 to 9 for 127 before the last wicket partnership of 37 provided some saving grace.

By the time, the colonials came around to bat for the second time, the pitch had dried out considerably and the batsmen made merry. Even the usually quiet Bannerman, went out of his shell and stroked his first century at this level. His association of 146 for the first wicket is a new record. After Massie fell for 86, Murdoch steeped in and took the score to 225 before he also fell to the hard working Steel. Horan was the only failure of the innings. Horan, surprisingly does well when everyone else fails but today with his mates making merry, he fell for the second ball he faced. After Bannerman departed for 106, Mcdonnell who made 67 and Bonnor who muscled his way to 69, compiled on English misery. The innings was declared closed at 460, eventually giving the Englishmen a target of 452 at the fag end of the day.

The English were so intimidated by the daunting task that they were never in the race and finished 200 runs short, the biggest margin of loss in these matches. Only a resolute 72 from Barnes off 55 balls, helped them avoid the utter humiliation after they slipped to 8 for 147. only Charles Studd with 43 runs provided some semblance of a fight. Once again he advocated his case of being promoted up in the order. With Barlow and Bligh not clicking at the top, maybe it is something to think about.

Bannerman was adjudged the Player Of The Match , England and Bligh have a lot of thinking on their hands before the second test that starts in a fortnight at the same venue.

Bulletin

England went into the test already 1-0. Bligh, on his arrival had advocated the defense of the Ashes urn. At the dinner hosted for them the night before, he had hoped his batsmen would put in some more application. When the play ended for lunch, that thought seemed to be lost on the batsmen. England were 73/4 after 30 gruesome overs.

Read and Steel helped England after they had slipped to 37/3 off 9 overs. The batsmen gave little away but the good thing was, no further wickets fell. The strong Australian attack stuck into England pretty early. Palmer drew the first blood when he had Studd caught behind for a duck, the batsmen bewildered at the keepers reflexes. Barlow on the other hand stuck some healthy blows. Leslie, seemed to be keen on attacking but the outswinger from Spofforth proved too good for him and Blackham jumped to hold onto the catch overhead. England?s problems compounded when Barlow gave a simple catch to Palmer off his own bowling. Read and Steel managed to keep the aussies at bay but they need to do pull out the rabbit from the sack to be competitive in the match.
