Story The Origin Of Test Cricket:IvoBligh's XI in Australia;1882-83;3rd Test; Two innings in one day!!!

England Vs Australia Sep1880

England won the one-off test without breaking much sweat by a whopping 117 runs.Frank Morley rightly acclaimed as Man Of The Match. He was given a golden watch and 25 Pounds for his efforts.
With this being a Three Day match and the only Test, both teams were looking to get a result.england, led by the "Good Old Doctor" scored 311 in the first innings. He was ably supported by debutant Barnes who scored 54,Lord Harris with a captains knock of 60.Admist the carnage, Penn scored 51 off 72 balls with just 2 fours, an innings defined by Wisden as "ballett compared to the brutal savagery of the rest!"
In reply, Australia were blown away for only 179 with Morley taking 6 for 74.Bannerman scores 60 to give a sembelance of fight.
In the second innings, England helped by an second fifty of the match by Barnes score 266 allout.Bannermann claiming his 5-for.wisden called it"Batsmen fell prey to their ambitious shots than bowler's guile!"
Despite a 90 by Murdoch and a brave 65 by Blackham, Australia fell short by 117 runs.It was a strange match on a dry pitch in September, with bowlers struggling to hold on to the ball and fielders scared to go for catches, lest they injured themselves.Admist the carnage, Spofforth, who had been so good on the tour was sorely missed. He had to sit out due to injury.

This story has been excellent so far and has not got the credit it deserved from some of the more regular posters in this forum especially considerng the way you have stuck at this. All I can say is well done mate and keep it up :)

4 Test Series

Lillywhite, Alfred Shaw and Arthur Shrewsbury led the most gruelling tour to date, again playing matches in the USA en route, The tour was blighted by the gambling that Harris had condemned three years. Against Victoria, the English players made a killing when they wagered ?1 each when the odds were 30-1 on them winning; there were also widespread rumours than two tourists had been paid ?100 each to throw a match. A third - Billy Midwinter - refused to join and was beaten up by the other two when he reported the approach to Shaw. The first Test was drawn - the first instance in Test history - as England had to catch a ship, and the final one suffered the same fate. It was to be the last drawn Test in Australia for more than 60 years.

First Test At M.C.G Circa 1878

My motivation is the number of views I get.People don't post in here is maybe they find it hard to relate to Ulyett than to Flintoff.I intend to have a look into history and give out some historical facts on the way.Soon, I intent to have stats thrown in there as well.I really can't start a story with present cricketers and have no stats tracking.I love stats and by starting out from the start,it would be make more sense to me!I guess thats the curse of being a perfectionist.

Day1 Lunch,England In Trouble

Australia, led by Murdoch won the toss and elected on field under the dark skies. Both teams had debutants:WH Cooper, E Evans, G Giffen, HH Massie (Aus); RG Barlow, W Bates, E Peate, R Pilling, WH Scotton, A Shrewsbury (Eng).

The first session belonged to Australia.Blackham was kept buys with 2 stumpings and two catches.Evans taking 4 for 26, supported by Palmer with 3 for 29.Midwinter top scoring with 15 runs.Run making was a big chore and England batsmen failed to apply themselves.

Ulyett was first to go, caught by Horan in the slips, followed by Barlow stumped by Blackham off Evans

Wicket No:3:SElby stumped off Evans
The only blemish was Giffen failing to hold on to a sharp chance off Bates

Wicket No:4:Bates who had two fifteis, last time the teams met, is snapped in the slips off Palmer
Wicket No.5: Shrewsbury caught off the inside edge.

Wicket No.6: Midwinter caught in the deep off palmer.Boyle takes a good running catch.
Wicket No.7:Emmett stumped for 1.
.

A first in Test Cricket!!

For the first time in Test Matches a rare coincidence of Bowler and Batsman sharing the first two initials of their names i.e W.H.

The collapse continues after the Lunch. Scotton having a torrid time is put out of his misery by Boyle who takes a brilliant catch off his own bowling.

The next wicket to fall is A.Shaw who is deceived and beaten in flight by Cooper and he hears the dreadful sound of ball hitting the timber.Shaw play a vital innings of 31.

Nice upate mate, Presentation is alot nicer!

Thanx a lot man.Glad you liked it.

Peate is the last man to go.He tries to pull a half tracker from Cooper but Bannermann takes a blinder at silly point.England all out for 99!

The pitch due to overnight rain is nearly impossible to bat on.English batsmen donot help their cause by not applying themselves.Shaw topscores with a defiant 31 but he also was guilty of throwing his wicket away.

All the bowlers are among wickets with Evan claiming 4 for 20.England have to bowl better. The pitch isn?t exactly a batmen?s paradise.

Australia fare no better than England. Seeing the help for slow bowlers, England open with Midwinter and he strikes immediately, trapping Bannermann .Wickets keep falling and Australia to Tea at 99/7.

Pretty similar story as England?s.All the bowlers sharing wickets with Shaw 3 for 35.This is good allround display from Shaw.He is leading form the front.A few handy contributions from the batsmen but the bowlers had upper hand.

Wicket No.1: Bannermann a bit unlucky. The ball seemed to be going down the leg side.
Wicket No.2: Massie skies to Mid-Off

Wicket No.3: Murdoch?s cut shot find Ulyett in the gully.
Wicket No.4:Mcdonnell beaten in flight and bowled by Peate

Wicket No.5: Giffen goes to another catch in the gully.
Wicket No.6: Horan hooks Ulyett straight into Shaw? hands.

Plamer hooks Ulyett from outside the off-stump.Shaw steadies himself, positions himself perfectly and takes another great catch. You can?t keep Shaw out of the game! He has been inspirational and has lead from the front.

Wicket No.8:Blackham plays forward to a swinging Yorker from Ulyett and is bowled comprehensively.

Wicket No.9: Evans is caught by Pilling in the covers.

Wicket No.10: Its all over for Australia.Boyle is snapped up by Bates off Ulyett

It has been pretty similar story. Nothing much to separate the two teams. The wet pitch making life miserable for the batsmen. However, inconsistent batting as well has plagued both of the teams.

Australia lead by 8 runs. In a low scoring affair, that can be vital.

England begin their second innings on the first day itself. There are still demons in the pitch and the wickets, just keep tumbling!

Wicket No.1:Barlow falls to the guile of Evans. Goes for a cover drive but the ball squeezes under the bat and there’s the deadly rattle.

Wicket No.2:Selby tries to hit his way out of trouble, not a good idea considering the pitch.Murdoch runs in and takes a blinder over his shoulder.

Meanwhile, Evans drops a simple caught and bowled chance.Ulyett tries to go for a drive but spoons a catch back to Evans.Evans who is equally surprised by the venom in the pitch can’t hold on to the simplest of chances!

Wicket No.3:Ulyett cuts and cuts hard to find Bannermann at point. A lot of catches have been pounced in the area. There is bounce in the pitch.Ulyett let-off not proving too costly for Australia.

Wicket No.4:Shrewbury has an error in judgement. He is hit on the arm as he bends down and the catch is taken at silly point by an ever-alert Murdoch.

England are 4 down for 41.Take away the 8 run lead, they lead by 33 runs.
