The Trevor Jackson Empire (Jog On Avram)

Well Cagliari are certainly no pushovers and Italy certainly isnt an easy place to get a good result from. Having said that Chelsea should have sealed the game in the first half because the hosts took over thereafter.

Chelsea sign Italian striker

rocchi_562604.jpg

Rocchi determind to impress Avram Grant.

Chelsea Football Club have signed Italian striker Tommaso Rocchi for a fee of ?12.25 million. Avram Grant opened out his cheque book to Lazio to get the signature of the twenty nine year old this morning. Avram Grant declared himself very pleased to have made his first signing. Rocchi was determind to impress the new manager.

Tomasso Rocchi started his career at Juventus in 1996 but was still very young and stayed in the reserves. He moved on to Como, a Serie C team. Rocchi was a regular starter for Como and played ninety games in three seasons. He managed to score a total of twenty one goals for the Serie C side.

Rocchi left Como in 2000 and moved up in the ranks to Treviso, a Serie B side. Tomasso Rocchi spent a season at Treviso and impressed a lot of the pundits and was seen as a possible Serie A leading striker. He played thirty seven games and scored eight goals.

After spending a season at Treviso, he moved on to Empoli. He was Empoli's leading striker and netted twelve goals in thirty seven games in his first season at the club. He was a major factor in Empoli's promotion to Serie A that season. Rocchi spent two more seasons at Empoli, playing sixty seven games and scoring seventeen goals.

Tomasso Rocchi impressed the Lazio staff and players during a Serie A encounter and was snapped up by the Rome side. Rocchi has started for Lazio in the majority of games for the last three seasons. He played one hundred and eight games for Lazio and scored a total of fourty five goals. He shared the goals with fellow striker, Goran Pandev.

Avram Grant said this at the press conference: "I'm delighted to have made my first signing. It's a great achievement for me. I think Tommaso Rocchi is a world class striker and will be brilliant for the team. He is a great team player aswell as being a quality player on his own. He works a lot, he looks for the ball. He doesn't just sit around waiting for it. Something I like very much.

I think we have an almost perfect team. We just need to make sure the players work together and play well together. It takes a while to get into a team with players that have already gelled together, have already played together. I think it won't take that long though. Some one who works so hard and searches for the ball like he [Tomasso Rocchi] does, it won't be hard."

When asked about whether he'd make anymore signings, he responded "I am looking for a right back. I'm not going to say who I'm after but I can confirm that I am looking for a right back. I have my staff looking at different right backs and hopefully they'll find a perfect player to suit my criteria. I'm sure they will, I trust them."

Personally I think he is an average-to-good striker but I am curious to see how it does in England because it is the style of the two leagues are different.

Well I wanted to sign an established striker-as opposed to an unknown who would break into the first team which is unrealistic-and I tried to change from my usual signings, you know, experiment a bit. Next update coming now. No more friendlies, only proper games and stuff.

Summary of pre-season:

Ajax 4-6 Chelsea - Amsterdam Tournament, Semi-Final

Ajax took a very early lead with Huntelaar, it was a good finish from an acute angle. They made it two nil, Cech was poor. Suddenly we scored two goals in quick succession with the new man Tommasso Rocchi. At the stroke of half time, Ajax made it 3-2 with Albert Luque scoring his second goal of the game. Petr Cech was very poor all half.

In the second half, it took Rocchi 15 minutes to score again, equalise the game and get his hattrick. Rocchi scored again in the next minute for his fourth and we were ahead for the first time in the game. Joe Cole shot the ball from outside the box to make it 5-3. Ajax got their fourth in the next minute and Cudicini was very shaky. Rocchi scored in the final minute for his fifth goal on his debut for Chelsea. An amazing start to his Chelsea career.

Chivas 2-5 Chelsea - Amsterdam Tournament, Final

Straight away Ashley Cole had to go off injured. Not a very good sign. We scored with Andriy Shevchenko following up a rebounded shot but the goal was given offside. Shevchenko did score 10 minutes later though by shooting from 20 yards into the bottom right hand corner brilliantly. Drogba made it two nil after heading a near post corner from Frank Lampard. We were dominating the game. Shevchenko made it three at the stroke of half time. Wright-Phillips did the hard work by running to the edge of the box then pulling it back to Drogba. Drogba tapped it on to Shevchenko who put it in the back of the net.

Chivas scored a great goal but it wasn't really worth much. A stunning strike from outside the box into the top corner. We got our fourth with some great play from Pizzaro. Pizzaro played the ball through to Essien who fired the ball into the net. Rocchi came on and set up a goal for Joe Cole. He played it through for Cole who placed it in the back of the net. Chivas got another consolation goal in the eighty seventh minute with a greatly placed finish. We won the Amsterdam Tournament in style.

PSV Eindhoven 0-1 Chelsea - Friendly

In the nineteenth minute; Didier Drogba finished a rebound from a Frank Lampard free kick to give us the lead. It was a pretty boring game after that and there wasn't anything to comment on. In the fourty first minute Didier Drogba was stretchered off. Rocchi was brought on to replace him. We were all crossing our fingers on his fitness. Cech had been the best player of the first half, saving everything PSV threw at him.

It was a pretty boring second half as well from our perspective. PSV had some great chances to score but Cech was on fire. Cech commanded the whole game and deserved his Man Of The Match accolade awarded to him after the match. He saved every chance PSV had with no fuss whatsoever.

Linfield 1-1 Chelsea - Friendly

We absolutely dominated the first twenty minutes of the game, having plenty of chances. Sending them all way over and wide though. We were all over Linfield for the first half but we were unable to convert the chances into goals. Linfield took the lead at the end of the first half. A free kick took a deflection and went into the back of the net. I was furious!

We began the second half just like the first, attacking Linfield straight away but nothing went in. I thought we had finally scored in the seventyth minute but Shaun Wright-Phillips was narrowly offside. It took eighty minutes for us to score but we finally did it. Joe Cole smashed the ball into the back of the net. I was very angry with the performance. We didn't even try to win this game.

Well some entertaining matches in the Amsterdam Tournament but very disappointing draw against Linfield ....

Great update Mani :)

Teams set for Charity Shield clash

charity%20shield.jpg

The trophy both teams will be competing for.

Chelsea vs Man Utd
Wembley Stadium
15:00, Sunday 5th August 2007
Referee: Mark Halsey

Although most see this game as a warm up for the Premiership matches that follow shortly after, Avram Grant and Sir Alex Ferguson will definitely be trying to win the game to get a psychological advantage over one another. The game will be played at the new Wembley Stadium, the first final to be played at the Stadium.

Chelsea have had a very goal filled pre season and are expected to continue their new attacking style injected by new manager Avram Grant. Grant has been at Chelsea for a month and his team scored sixteen goals in six friendly games. The most notable match was their 6-4 victory over Ajax in the Amsterdam Tournament with new boy Tomasso Rocchi scoring five of those goals.

Tomasso Rocchi signed for Chelsea for a fee of ?12.25 million from Lazio. He is Avram Grant's first and thus far only signing for Chelsea. In his first game in a Chelsea shirt he scored an extravagant five goals. He is still regaining his strength to get to match fitness and has a fifty-fifty chance of starting later.

Both teams are struck by injury worries ruling out big names from this match. Chelsea will have to do without strong finisher Didier Drogba who is out with bruised head and is expected to be out for a few more days. Wayne Bridge and Michael Ballack are also out of the Chelsea squad travelling to Wembley. Both out for around a month.

Man Utd will have to play Chelsea without four main eleven players. Experienced full back and captain Gary Neville is out with a strained ankle ligament. Louis Saha and Owen Hargreaves both miss the game due to a strained knee ligament and Paul Scholes is out due to a damaged knee cartlidge. Sir Alex Ferguson called these injuries crucial for this encounter and that they could change the outcome of the match.

Man Utd made four major signings this season, splashing their cash around for all four of them. Solid midfielder Owen Hargreaves finally made his move to Utd from Bayern Munich for a fee of ?17 million. However he is out injured due to a strained knee ligament. He is expected to be back after a week.

Portuguese young winger Nani signed from Sporting Lisbon for ?14 million. He signed from the same team as Cristiano Ronaldo did and he has similar qualities as Ronaldo does. He may start but will most likely play in the game whether it be from coming on from the bench or starting in the first eleven.

Nineteen year old Anderson has returned from the Copa America after representing Brazil in the Copa America. Anderson signed for Man Utd for a fee of ?17 million and is likely to start for this match.

The transfer that went to the courts was the one of, supposedly, West Ham's Carlos Tevez to Man Utd. Tevez finally made his move to Utd after a long row between many unknown people. All this aside, Tevez will be looking forward to starting against the current Premiership champions. The Argentinian had an average pre-season but would definitely want to turn on the style for this match.

Hope Chelsea give United some fight or else United are gonna win with ease... Great presentation and writing Mani..:clap

I just hope that Rocchi is at match fitness for the game. He scored 5 goals in his first game but his fitness went down very low and has been working it up since.

Grant ready for Charity Shield encounter

_44510610_grant_av512x288.jpg

Grant is mentally prepared.

Avram Grant has shown Alex Ferguson that his team will not back down against Man Utd in their Charity Shield encounter later today. Alex Ferguson called Avram Grant's team weaker than his despite all the injuries and that they were not mentally prepared. Grant responded by saying that his team was ready.

He said this "I think that Alex Ferguson is just trying to get into my teams head. He doesn't realise that in fact we are the better team. Even if he didn't have injury worries, we would still be better. We are also weaker with injuries so he shouldn't complain. If his team doesn't have enough cover incase of injuries, there is problems in his team.

Our team is mentally prepared as well as physically. We have prepared our minds for this game during pre-season. Our fitness levels our fine and ready to play competitive football. There is no problems with our team.

I hope Tomasso Rocchi will be able to start. He will have a late fitness today to see if he is fit enough to start this match. If he can we will have the upper edge. He is a brilliant player and has already proved that in pre-season. Playing Ajax away is not an easy fixture and to score five goals is amazing.

The result is not that important though although a win would be good. Alex Ferguson wants to win this game badly because he feels that it's the only trophy he can win this season. He doesn't trust his players much then. We are more focused on the season."

Chelsea vs Man Utd

1430: Hello and welcome to the BBC Live Text feature on the BBC website. My name's Maninder and I'll be with you for the whole of this match.

It is going to be gruelling encounter between two Premier League heavyweights and I for one can't wait for the match to start. Sir Alex Ferguson is not a stranger to this fixture where as for Avram Grant, this is his first competitive game in charge of Chelsea.

Sir Alex Ferguson began his mind games with the new Chelsea boss saying that his team was not mentally prepared. Avram Grant responded confidentally "He [Sir Alex] doesn't realise that we are the better team."

Both teams are confident heading into this match and it's sure to be a cracking match. For all the news and text on this match, this is the place to be. I'll be here all day.

1500: We have the team sheets now, they are as follows:

Chelsea: Petr Cech, Juliano Belletti, Ricardo Carvalho, John Terry, Salomon Kalou, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Florent Malouda, Tommaso Rocchi, Andriy Shevchenko.
Subs: Carlo Cudicini, Alex, Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Claudio Pizzaro, Paulo Ferrera, John Obi Mikel.

Man Utd: Edwin Van der Sar, John O'Shea, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez.
Subs: Tomasz Kuszczak, Christopher Fagan, Nani, Mikael Silvestre, Dong Fangzhuo, Darren Fletcher, Wes Brown.

Both teams are playing in their opinions, the strongest line ups. Neither side wants to lose this game.

The Italian hit man, Tommaso Rocchi has passed his very late fitness test and will start this match. He scored a record number of five goals on his debut against Ajax in the Amsterdam Tournament.

1301: "Yes! Get in! Rocchi is starting. Our Italian hitman is going to score another four, five goals."
Davetheblue on 606

Yeah...maybe not that many.

1402: Chelsea will be playing a 4-4-2 formation and look like they're going to press down the wings. They're going to use their fast wingers and attacking full backs to cause problems for Man Utd.

Man Utd will also play a 4-4-2 formation but they look to play a more central game. This is quite interesting as both Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo are playing yet they look like they'll have to cut inside to the centre to get the ball.

1402: "I can see Chelsea beating Man Utd today. The team is much stronger and has much more depth on the bench with the substitutes. The attack has a lot of pace on the wings with two powerful finishers. They play very attacking football since Avram Grant took over and he's injected some great play into them. It should be a great game."
Former Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola

Chelsea vs Man Utd

2jga1ol.png

1505: The match gets underway and there's a huge roar from the both sets of fans who have travelled to Wembley today.

1507 We're two minutes in and Chelsea already create a chance. A long ball from Petr Cech was brought down and ran with by Michael Essien. He tried a long shot from outside the box but didn't test the keeper at all. A positive start from Chelsea though.

1509: A great chance from Man Utd after some poor defending by Chelsea. Ashley Cole, in his own third, tried to pass it across his defensive line to Frank Lampard. Wayne Rooney intercepted the ball though but tried a shot with his first touch. It tested Petr Cech though and went out for a corner.

1512: Man Utd are trying to attack down the left hand side with Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs. They keep trying to put through balls through past the defender but Belletti is winning the ball back.

goallk5.png
1514: GOAL Chelsea 0-1 Man Utd
It's a trademark Cristiano Ronaldo finish to put the Red Devils ahead. The attack started from a poor clearance by John Terry which went to John O'Shea. Michael Essien then didn't close down O'Shea who passed the ball on to Rooney. No one went to Rooney either who put the ball through to Ronaldo. Ronaldo then powered the ball into the top corner and went to the corner flag and celebrated to his fans.

1514: Awful defending all round there. No one did anything right for Chelsea in that attack. Why did JT boot the ball up field in the first place? Terrible.

1520:
A long ball by Petr Cech was controlled amazingly by Tomasso Rocchi and took past Nemanja Vidic. He couldn't finish his shot at the angle he was but he's won his team a corner.

1521: A corner from Frank Lampard his headed powerfully by John Terry. A great save by Edwin Van der Sar though to deny Chelsea of a goal. Another corner though.

1521:
The ball came in again from Frank Lampard from the second corner. Florent Malouda got his head on the ball and it was going into the top left hand corner. Ryan Giggs, brilliantly headed the ball off the line. Great stuff from Giggs.

1526:
A corner from Ryan Giggs was curled into the box. Wayne Rooney headed the ball goalwards but a fantastic save from Petr Cech denies him of a goal.

goallk5.png
1526: GOAL Chelsea 0-2 Man Utd
Everyone thought that the ball was cleared and the danger was averted but a follow up attack by Man Utd has put them up by two goals. A great ball through by Michael Carrick was taken by Carlos Tevez. Ricardo Carvalho was beaten by pace. Carvalho recovered and thought he'd stopped Tevez from scoring. His shot was saved by Petr Cech but Tevez ran up and finished for the rebound.

1537: Man Utd aren't stopping with their attacks. Chelsea are just going for the long balls and are achieving nothing. Avram Grant is furious though, he doesn't want long balls. He's telling his players to pass it about.
Graham Taylor on BBC Five Live

goallk5.png
1538: GOAL Chelsea 0-3 Man Utd
A corner from Ryan Giggs on the right hand side was curled away from the goal. Nemanja Vidic leaped into the air and put his head perfectly on the ball. The ball flew into the left corner and into the back of the net.

1539:
Man Utd almost score again. Cristiano Ronaldo tried his luck from thirty yards with a low powerful strike into the corner. Petr Cech was forced to fall to his feet to save the shot. Carlos Tevez ran up for the rebound but he was given offside.

goallk5.png
1546: GOAL Chelsea 1-3 Man Utd
Chelsea have scored with their first real attack of the match. Salomon Kalou beat Patrice Evra on the left hand side and put in a wonderful cross. It was headed by Frank Lampard but the shot was stopped by Edwin Van der Sar. Lampard went for the rebound but it was saved again. Malouda struck the ball from outside the box and it was deflected off of Andriy Shevchenko and hit the post. Shevchenko pulled the ball across into the centre of the box and Tommaso Rocchi finished the attack by tapping it into the back of the net.

1546: Finally! A real attack with us passing it about instead of ridiculous long balls. And guess what? A goal is scored from it. Our Italian hitman has done it again.

1548: Juliano Belletti played a long ball from a free kick into the box and Tommaso Rocchi did extremely well to get a head onto it. The header went over the bar though.

1551: HALF TIME Chelsea 1-3 Man Utd
It's half time at Wembley and Man Utd will definitely be the happier side. Avram Grant was furious with the players for not passing it about. They were going with the long ball stratergy and were punished severely. I think Avram Grant will be saying quite a lot to his players in that changing room.

Chelsea vs Man Utd

2jga1ol.png

1600:
Both teams are ready for the second half of this Charity Shield encounter. Man Utd are currently ahead after fourty five minutes of this match. Ronaldo, Tevez and Vidic scored for Man Utd where as Chelsea scored the one goal with Tommaso Rocchi.

1602: Man Utd start off with a half hearted attack. Wayne Rooney was forced onto the left hand side by Ricardo Carvalho but he managed to get a cross in. Cristiano Ronaldo got a head on it but couldn't direct it goalwards.

24pf50h.jpg
1603: Florent Malouda is booked for an unecessary tackle on Michael Carrick. It wasn't anything serious but it deserves a booking.

1604: John O'Shea plays a great ball through to Carlos Tevez who cuts in into the box. He goes for the shot but it's saved by Petr Cech. Wayne Rooney is not happy, he was unmarked.

1605: Man Utd go for the counter attack again. Wayne Rooney plays a ball through to Carlos Tevez who out-muscles Ricardo Carvalho. He is pressurised by John Terry and the shot is just saved by Cech.

1606: Carlos Tevez has been brilliant all game. He's been out-muscling, out pacing and just out classing the Chelsea defenders. He's been at the heart of the attacks.
BBC Five Live Commentator Alan Green

1607: Cristiano Ronaldo is brought down by Florent Malouda after Malouda tugged his shirt. Mark Halsey gives him a serious talking to and gives him his final warning. He's on very thin ice now.

1608: Tommaso Rocchi plays a ball through to Andriy Shevchenko. Shevchenko goes for the spectacular after seeing Edwin Van der Sar off of his line. He tried a lob but it went over the bar.

subde6.gif
1610: Avram Grant makes two changes. Florent Malouda and Andriy Shevchenko are taken off and Joe Cole and Claudio Pizzaro are brought on. Malouda was on his last warning with Mark Halsey where as Shevchenko was brought off to try and get a break through.

1615: Frank Lampard put in a corner that was poorly cleared out by Nemanja Vidic. Lampard regained possession and played it on to Michael Essien. Essien struck the ball at the bottom right corner but was well saved by Van der Sar. Rocchi tried to get the rebound but O'Shea cleared it away.

1616: Some great attacking play by Chelsea there. Joe Cole played a ball through to Frank Lampard who ran on with it. Tommaso Rocchi and Michael Essien were in the centre but he went for the shot. His shot went horribly over and wide and into the stands as he received his fair share of boo's.

1616: Ahaha nice one Fat Frank!

1618: GOAL Chelsea 2-3 Man Utd
What an excellent attack by Chelsea. Perfect passing all round. It was basic football. One touch to control the ball then pass it on and run. That's what the whole attack was from the half way line to the back of the net. Tommaso Rocchi fired the ball into the back of the net for the finish. Chelsea are back in the game and are looking great.

1618: Rocchi's done it again! He just can't stop scoring! That big bald man really knows how to finish that ball.

1618: Michael Carrick is not happy though. He feels that Rocchi was clearly offside. He is arguing with the referee and is lucky not to get booked. Rocchi was in fact offside though. Definitely a talking point for after the game.
Alan Green on BBC Five Live

subde6.gif
1619: Sir Alex Ferguson has took off Carlos Tevez and brought on an extra midfielder, Darren Fletcher in an attempt to hold their lead. Tevez receives a huge round of applause for his great efforts today.

goalhs9.png
1626: GOAL Chelsea 3-3 Man Utd
Chelsea are level in superb fashion! Juliano Belletti has levelled the game for Chelsea. He kisses his badge and punches the air. What a goal. Tommaso Rocchi had the ball at his feet on the wing but played it back to Joe Cole. Cole put the ball through perfectly to Juliano Belletti who at such an acute angle hammered the ball into the back of the net.

1626: That's why Avram Grant has his full backs run so far up the pitch, because they can pull things like that out of the bag.
Graham Taylor on BBC Five Live

subde6.gif
1628: Sir Alex has made his final two changes, and they're defensive ones. Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea are brought off while Mikael Silvestre and Wes Brown come on.

1628: Chelsea have just levelled the game to 3-3, they're full on confidence and Mikael Silvestre has just been brought on. No way of winning now.

1630: The final change of the match as Avram Grant brings on Shaun Wright-Phillips. Salomon Kalou is brought off. He's been quite quiet today and Wright-Phillips' energy should totally bring up the game.

goalhs9.png
1637: GOAL Chelsea 3-4 Man Utd
Another shocking twist in the tale! Man Utd have taken the lead again. Wayne Rooney goes to his fans to celebrate his goal, which is surely the winner? Juliano Belletti was too far forward to be marking Ryan Giggs who cut inside to the box and pulled it back to Rooney. Rooney smashed the ball into the back of the net, an unstoppable shot.

goalhs9.png
1642: GOAL Chelsea 4-4 Man Utd
I should have known something else would happen. Edwin Van der Sar is furious with himself. His terrible clearance went straight to Shaun Wright-Phillips. He took it forward then crossed it towards the far post. Claudio Pizzaro hit the ball perfectly on the volley to equalise the game. Every Chelsea fan in the stadium has gone ecstatic.

1642: What a game! This game has had everyone at the edge of their seat from the start, and it's not even over yet! This game is going down in the record books.
BBC Five Live commentator Alan Green

1644: Everyone is looking at the board that the fourth official is holding up. There will be four minutes of added time. Plenty of time for another shocking twist.

1646:
Ashley Cole's throw in leads to some good passes. Frank Lampard took a touch and went for a shot. It was saved by Van der Sar but not held. No one approached for the rebound and Van der Sar collects the ball.

1648: Mark Halsey blows the whistle for full time. It's going to penalties. What a game we've had, this is the only way to seperate two world class teams.

1653: Penalties

Tommaso Rocchi will be the man to step up first. He's been brilliant all game. Can he hold his nerve for this one kick of the ball? Yes he can. What a brilliant penalty. He smashed that into the top corner. 1-0

Luis Nani will be taking Man Utd's first penalty. The Portuguese midfielder is making his competitive debut for Man Utd. He sends the keeper the wrong way. Great penalty, he placed it in the top right hand corner. 1-1

Frank Lampard is up next. He's scored so many for Chelsea, can he score this one? What a penalty. Edwin Van der Sar dived the right way but he perfected that penalty so much, no keeper could save it. 2-1

It's Wayne Rooney up now for Man Utd. He carefully puts the ball down on the spot. It's saved! Terrible penalty. No power on the ball and it wasn't accurate enough. Cech is jubilant. 2-1

Chelsea's left back Ashley Cole will take the next one. Straight down the middle and saved. Awful penalty. What a waste of a chance from Ashley Cole. He is disappointed. 2-1

One of the best passers of the ball in the whole world, Michael Carrick. How well does he do spot kicks? Not well enough! He hits the post. The ball has bounced back to his feet. 2-1

Claudio Pizzaro steps up confidentally...and scores! Great penalty. Smashed into the bottom corner. 3-1

The pressure is on the Man Utd legend, Ryan Giggs. If he misses, Chelsea win the penalty shoot out and the Charity Shield. He is going for the short run up. He stops for a moment to think. Saved! Petr Cech dives to his right and the penalty is saved. Chelsea win the Charity Shield! What a turn around! 3-1

What a game! How did Man Utd not win! We need better penalty takers! KUTGW Mani

Yeah it was a brilliant game. I thought that when it went to 3-3, I would get another goal and win the game but then Utd scored again . Top class attacking.
