You probably know this, but be careful when you auto generate times because they are either a lot slower or a lot quicker than normal. I find it strange how that happens, but it is common in ISI engined racing games.

Interesting that we have fairly similar times for Sepang so far, despite using completely different mods! I did a 1:35.9 on the first day of testing. You're times were a couple of seconds quicker in Australia, so I was expecting similar in Malaysia.

Well for Australia I had used a readymate car setup which was said to be the best for that circuit. Here in Sepang, Ive been trying various setups myself. I did a total of 42 laps, and the fastest time that I posted was using the softer compound tires. My slowest (attempted) laptime was 1:37 something which was on the hard compound tires.

Apart from that I am far more comfortable on Albert Park than most other tracks. You'll probably notice that during the season and hence our times might be a lot closer on the other tracks.

Also I know the autogenerated times are never correct which is why I am not going too much into them. The Malaysian GP Practice and Qualifying sessions will indicate the AI laptimes more accurately.

Widely regarded as a benchmark for other Grand Prix venues, the Sepang circuit boasts superb pit garage and media facilities, as well as impressive grandstands and patron amenities.

The circuit, normally raced in a clockwise direction, is 5.54 kilometres long, and is noted for its sweeping corners and wide straights. The layout is quite unusual, with a very long back straight separated from the pit straight by just one very tight hairpin.

This is the venue for the second and next race of the 2007 FIA Formula 1 Championship. Fernando Alonso arrives here with a perfect start to the season with victory at Melbourne. His team-mate and rookie driver Lewis Hamilton secured fourth place in that race to take Mclaren to the top of the constructor's standings with 15 points.

Recently Sepang hosted its first official Formula 1 test which ran from 27-30 March. The testing was initially dominated by the Williams team but Mclaren took over in the final two days. Toyota were also impressive with Jarno Trulli going as high as second fastest on the last day of testing.

2006 Lookback
In what a was very surprising qualifying session, Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella took pole position while his team-mate and defending World champion Fernando Alonso had to settle for seventh after a fuel miscalculaton meant he was carrying too much fuel for that session. Michael Schumacher was penalised 10 places for changing his engine dropping him from fourth to fourteenth place. Britain's Jenson Button was second while the Mclaren duo of Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen were fifth and sixth respectively. Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber were the surprise packages with third and fourth place on the grid.

The race began with Rosberg and Webber being caught out by Alonso coming into the first corner, who managed to grab 3rd from his starting position. Fisichella and Button maintained their spots, but further back R?ikk?nen's day ended early having been hit by Christian Klien during the first lap. Klien's car was badly damaged, but the Red Bull mechanics repaired the car enough to send it back out, although he later retired due to a hydraulics problem. More problems followed for the better qualifiers, as Rosberg's engine blew on the 6th lap, while Webber also retired nine laps after his teammate. Further down the field, Massa and the Schumacher brothers made their way up the field throughout the day. The lead was only held by three people throughout the race, with Alonso's fuel problems actually giving him the advantage over Button, with Alonso managing to take second by staying out longer.

Several other cars retired during the race, with only 14 cars remaining at the end. Takuma Sato managed to finish another race in his Super Aguri. Ralf Schumacher managed to get his Toyota into 8th place, having started dead last. Schumacher threatened Jacques Villeneuve towards the end laps, but was not able to pass for 7th. The two Ferrari?s were able to pull themselves into 5th and 6th place, but it was Massa who claimed the higher spot, beating Michael Schumacher despite pressure at the end. Juan Montoya was unspectacular once again, but another strong performance allowed him to reach 4th.

Fisichella scores his first victory of the season

After the pit stops were completed, it was never doubted that Fisichella would win, and with Button slowing off the pace, content with third, it fell to Renault to pick up their first one-two finish, with the World Champion going clear at the top of the points table by seven points, despite only finishing second to Fisichella.

Nice presentation here mate. Keep up the great work. Cant wait for the race!

Friday practice

A nice day here at Sepang and a pretty decent crowd turnout for what is a practice session for this weekend's Malaysian GP. About two weeks all the teams had conducted tests here and it had turned out to be a promision one for us as we finished in the top three on two of the four days of testing. I myself took third on the second day, with only the Williams of Nico Rosberg and Mclaren of Pedro de la Rosa going quicker.

So the entire team was looking forward to this weekend and hoping to maintain the form we had shown in testing.

Session 1:
Well by the time I ventured out onto the track, Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica were first and second with the former posting a quickest lap of 1:35.550. This wasnt very far off my best time during testing so I knew if I pushed a bit hard I would be able to match it.

p3.jpg

Now the key to a fast lap in Sepang is mastering the fast corners. However I wasnt quite able to do so in my first and second attempt and that reflected in my poor laptimes of 1:36.343 and 1:36.405 respectively before returning to the pits. I was using the same soft compound tires that I had in testing so I knew that I was making a mistake somewhere. I was also asked by my racing chief to not push as hard and take it easy in the next attempt.

In the meantime Lewis Hamilton had improved on his previous time and his team-mate had taken second place ahead of my team-mate Jarno Trulli who had done a 1:35.561.

My next attempt saw me improve on my previous time by about 3/10th of a second to post a quickest of 1:36.058. I later went to post a quickest of 1:35.939 which was good enough for twelfth place.

p4.jpg

Nick Heidfeld was fastest with 1:35.120, while Jarno Trulli capped of a sensational session finished second with 1:35.296.

Session 2:
Looking at Trulli's brilliant performance in that first session I was eager to improve myself. I knew something was going wrong from my side because I had posted quicker laptimes during testing. We made some minor changes to suspension, ride height and brake bias in order to get more grip which would allow me take those fast corners a bit more easily. I would be down on pace but I believed I was losing too much time on those corners. This setup was very similar to Trulli's car.

But instead of helping, I ended up posting slower laptimes than even the first session and was forced back to return to the original settings. Trulli too wasnt doing as well as he did before.

p3n2.jpg

By the end of the session I had posted a best of 1:35.974, a few hundreths of a second slower than my best in the first session. But that cost me another spot as I had to settle for thirteenth. Mclaren's Lewis Hamilton went into the 1 minute 34s to take top spot followed by Nick Heidfeld in second place.

A gloomy start to Saturday

Saturday Morning:

After a bright and sunny Friday, we were greeted by an overcast and humid Saturday here at Sepang. Well most importantly this meant a possible change in the car configurations and setup. However as it hadnt rained as such and the track was still dry enough, it was safe enough to use the dry weather soft compound tires.

And as we noticed, everyone did the same. The times were obviously going to be affected though. Nick Heidfeld who topped the session put in a fastest time of 1:35.450, almost .3 of a second slower than his Friday laps.

j1.jpg

I myself went into the 1.36s posting a quickest of 1:36.478 almost half a second slower than yesterday and .8 of a second slower than my best time during testing.

But it was a session that once again betokened BMW's pace as Nick Heidfeld took top spot and Robert Kubica was third. The Mclaren of Fernando Alonso split the two BMWs taking second place while Felipa Massa had to settle for fourth.

Practice 3:
1. Nick Heidfeld (BMW Sauber) 1:35.450
2. Fernando Alonso (Mclaren Mercedes) 1:35.466
3. Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber) 1:35.489

Some ok lap time sbut you really need to be hitting those late 1:35's if you wanna have a good position to get some race points.

Fantastic story, great presentation :clap

2007 Formula 1 Championship
Malaysian GP Qualifying

Quite amazingly the skies had cleared by afternoon and we had pretty much blue skies for the all important qualifying session. This gave me another oppurtunity to put in a quick lap, as I had failed to do so throughout Friday and was outpaced by my more experienced team-mate Jarno Trulli.

q3.jpg

After a few cars had already gone on to track and Mark Webber had taken provisional pole, I set out for my first try. A decent first try as I posted my quickest lap of the weekend at 1:35.936. Unfortunately I never quite managed to improve on that and had to settle for fourteenth place while Trulli went quicker by about .6 of a second to take sixth place.

q4.jpg

Nick Heidfeld took a deserved pole position after dominating the timesheets since yesterday. Fernando Alonso was second followed by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

q1.jpg

With three different cars at the top we were set for an exciting race but I had a lot of work to do come tomorrow. Just the second race weekend and the pressure was already mounting.

Nick Heidfeld and Mario Theissen celebrating pole position

It seems Malaysian track giving trouble to the new Toyota driver.. Now, should be aiming to come within Top10 first in race... and if possible like, going ahead well in front during the start of race, we might try getting some points as well.

Gud luck for the race  Nice presentation Sid!

A race to forget

2007 Formula 1 Championship
Malaysian GP - Sepang

Well the clouds had almost completely cleared up and we were left with nearly fully blue skies. The track had also dried up completely and all in all it looked perfect for a good race.

And while all the talk was about Nick Heidfeld's super show in qualifying, I could feel the heat myself after being easily outqualified by team-mate Jarno Trulli.

But the race is what mattered the most and I still had a chance of redeeming myself by doing well today. Australia was a great start for me, but that had bought additional expections and pressure on me for the rest of the season. However despite all this I tried my absolute best to remain calm and focus on the race alone.

m1.jpg

The formation lap was completed and all the cars got ready for the start of the 2007 Malaysian Grand Prix. And soon it was go!

m2.jpg

Going into the first turn I gained one place after Robert Kubica's BMW failed to start, although Jenson Button did come very close to going past me but I was able to cut him just in time. I was right behind Alexander Wurz and tried to chase him for sometime but the Williams driver was soon able to move away in front.

m3.jpg

Fernando Alonso had a brilliant start to overtake Nick Heidfeld heading into that first turn and although the BMW was able to keep up with the Mclaren for the next few laps.

m4.jpg

In the meantime I found myself being put pressure by Honda's Jenson Button. The British driver had already tried to overtake me at the start and had now managed to post quicker laps than me. I was initially too involved in trying to close in Wurz and as a result dint bother about Button's faster times. But soon I was informed of it through the pit radio and then started what was a battle for thirteenth spot.

m5.jpg

Up in front, Alonso had managed to move clear of Heidfeld and looked well set for a second consecutive race victory. Renault's Heikki Kovalainen had gone past the Williams of the Nico Rosberg to take seventh place.

m6.jpg

And then in one of the laps, I made a mistake on turn number 5 and went offtrack for a while and this allowed Button to close in right on my tail although I still managed to stay in front. But soon enough he made a move from the right, as I went a bit wide, and he was able to finally go in front. This was becoming a race to forget for me and I now just was looking to get the car to the finish.

m7.jpg

m8.jpg

m9.jpg

Then it was pitstop time, lasting 8.5 seconds. I joined the track without losing track position as Scott Speed and Vitantonio Liuzzi had both pitted before me and were a good eight seconds behind.

mp1.jpg

m10.jpg

And after Jenson went for his stop I tried to gain on him and was able to close the gap a bit. Although once again he managed to eventually move ahead.

The first pitstops worked against Nick Heidfeld as he found himself behind the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

m11.jpg

mp2.jpg

The second pitstop dint change anything for me, and I was pretty much set to making it to the finish. And there I was taking the final hairpin for the last time, some three seconds behind Button to finally end the race at fourteenth place.

m12.jpg

Fernando Alonso won the race to make it two of out two and increase his points lead at the driver's championship. Kimi Raikkonen finished second for Ferrari while pole position man Nick Heidfeld took the final podium spot. Jarno Trulli finished at sixth place to bag three championship points. A good weekend for him. Alexander Wurz who started in front of me finished in tenth place.
