Reaction
We lost the toss and were put into bowl, though I would of rather batted first. The seamers didn't get much reward in the first innings as South Africa skittled out for 288 after being well set at 266/5. Kaneria was fundamental for the side as he got 5 wickets for 73 runs, whilst the rest of the bowlers failed to hit the right spots. Afridi managed two wickets whilst Akhtar, Ahmed and Fazil picked up the single wicket for their troubles.
With 288 on the table by South Africa, we had to perform and aim for 300. We fell just short and got ourselves into the lead - a 6 run lead. It wasn't that good a batting performance in reality as we found ourselves 45/4 and 255/7. It was thanks to Raza who lasted from the 5th partnership all the way to batting with the tail, without being removed. 121* was what he fully deserved for basically keeping us in the game. Afridi smashed 48 whilst the tail offered support with Ahmed(36) and Fazil(22) sticking around. We would need to perform better in the second Test I felt.
We were required to bowl again and we bowled superbly, ending up getting all South Africa's batsmen out for less than 22. Apart from one. Graeme Smith was the only resistance but what a resistent innings as he finally dwindled out to Afridi for 153 runs. A more all rounded bowling performance saw Ahmed once again fail with the ball and no doubt lose his spot for the second Test. Kaneria didn't managed to do too well and got 1-78, but did bowl 28 overs. Akhtar and Fazil both picked up 2 wickets with neither being instrumental or very impressive. Another spinner took the spoils in this innings as Afridi continued his vital participation in this match with 4-65, including the wicket of Graeme Smith. 295 all out meant we were chasing around 290.
We got the runs comfortabley but lost quick wickets at the end of our innings. We were 226/2 and looked set to win the match in style but quick wickets once the score was at 270/3 saw the innings look worse at a glance. Tariq scored 127 before getting ran out which was largely Yousuf's fault. You can forgive Yousuf, mind, as he did score a sensational 84. Khan and Bin-nasir both made twenties whilst the rest of the batsmen failed to make a difference to the match's outcome. Still, the vital win to start the series well.
