I would agree that more pitches need to give assistance to bowlers, but this wasn't the case really (I don't call a slow wicket assistance, it's just a crap pitch). Well only second innings. The ball didn't move at all in our bowling innings off the seam or in the air and Tuffey and Bond are definitely good exponents of it, it just was slow and kept a bit low on the odd occasion. There's an obvious problem playing cricket there. Not sure if it's just the lights or whether at night time the atmosphere does it all, but they need to play it in the day time. They can't let a ground be so one sided to the side batting first.

SL had already lost twice on it to Pakistan so they knew a lot more about it. We have the best shot against India though so that's a positive. What's to bet we lose the toss again though.

I don't think its got anything to do with the pitch. I mean how can the actual track just change over an our break? I think its more to do with the atmosphere aye. Maybe the lights have something to do with it with the air getting moist and dew coming into play. I thought Ranil Abenayake made a good point about how the lights may dry out the dew that gets on the pitch and then make it skid on more. Its a head scratcher.

To be fair I think NZ took the foot off the pedal at 69-5. They let the Sam and Mathews rotate the strike way too much and they settled in. Should've been more attacking. They were struggling initially but once they spent some time in the middle it got easier. I thought Guptill played a poor shot and Ryder was lazy with his footwork. It was like they had never seen a swinging ball before. That was just channel bowling.

Big ups to Sam i thought he was phenomenal. I have to admit i was pretty annoyed with him just dead batting everything at the start and not trying to get singles even but he knew what he was doing. And Thushara impressed me with his pace consitently hitting 140ks thats quick. This is the attack i want so very well balanced with Mathews and his innings was brillant. Was very impressed at how he curbed his natural aggressiveness to play a steady hand.

A very good bowling performance by SL, 1st they got 3 quick wickets and then they didnt give away many runs, SL winning by 97 runs thats quite a big margin in ODI...A good come back by them after loosing two back to back games...

We did a bit, a few loose balls were bowled and it took the pressure off. Credit to Samaweera though. You have more time in ODIs then you think, I think the other players lost patience due to the T20s and stuff, if the conditions are tough you can afford to start slow and occupy. He did a perfect job, batted to the batting powerplay and then made hay, summed up conditions perfectly and showed his experience (though he's not played a heck of a lot of ODIs he's played for a long time).

Wasn't impressed that Tuffey didn't bowl out. He could have bowled another over in his first spell especially. We probably will be better off with another batsman in the side. We have 5 specialist bowlers (6 if you count Oram) and part timers Ryder and Elliot can bowl a bit. Maybe bring in Broom for a bowler. Might have to be N McCullum despite him bowling well.

Oram still needs to stand up with the bat. I don't think he is good enough to bat at six right now. He is just lucky everyone else failed today as well.

I must say I have been impressed with Elliott and the way he goes about his batting.

Danny said it best in first innings commentary. Having a ground where the team who bats wins so often is bad for ODI cricket with everyone calling for changes to the format etc. They need to fix this.

thats exctly why they should use the Sachin Idea! its not so bad if you think about it...

its actually good to see something for the bowlers. with the majority of the pitches batsman friendly this was a nice change.

Half true, because it's harder under the lights, and I'd rather see a pitch that has exaggerated movement, like ridiculous seam or swing lol.

Nah that would kill the game. Sri Lanka started to rebuild really well around that time. I don't know to much about this ground but if the toss is that important there shouldn't be any D/N games played their. We could on won the game had we not let Sri Lanka get away from us, it's typical though. Broom should come into the team for the next game, hopefully for Oram but I'd say for McCullum most likely.

went to bed with SL at about 5-60 and woke up to New Zealand have lost by 97 runs!!!
This used to happen to us before, bond got us off to a great start and everyone else played average. Most noticeable against Australia in 2003 i think. Had them like 6-50 they made like around 200 and bowled us out short of that.

Even though this game wasn't a great advert for ODIs I thought it was a good spectacle nonetheless. I mean we were able to see a fightback and a good recovery from being down and out literally. I think thats still the beauty of the 50 over format coz there is still time for proper orthodox players to consolidate and recover properly.

I think the conditions can't be tampered with coz obviously in different countries there are different conditions thats the beauty of it. You'd expect a slow low turner at Eden Gardens, a true pitch with good bounce at the Bull Ring etc.. That has to be there coz thats the whole point of touring and playin in different conditions. Tosses have decided games before and will do in the future I knew for sure we were down and out when Pakistan batted first in the last 2 games.

What has to be learnt here at the Premadasa is its all about damage limitation. If you lose the toss and bowling then its about keeping the total as low as possible which means early wickets and not letting the batsmen settle. Not give easy too many singles etc.

On a different note i've been saying this over and over but Tharanga should get a go at the top. Its a emotional call to drop Jayasuriya but its got to be done. All good if he proves me wrong. I think the only positions that can be taken in the side atm is the opener with Dilshan and no.6 ahead of Mathews. Kandamby will prob be persisted with. Sams cemented his place for the time being with that knock its such a load off Mahela and Sangakkara to have a quality middle order player to bat with the tail and get those extra runs.

I think the main problem people have is that the team who bats first wins, day nighters shouldn't be played on that pitch.

well I don't want too much advantage for the bowlers but it is ridiculous hw much advantage the batsman have these days.

didn't the ICC make up some sort of rule or something that they will make it mandatory to have pitches that assist the bowlers more then they do now.

I see what your trying to say but when the toss pretty much decides who's going to win the game (The record shows that) it's pointless even playing. The games here should only be played during the day.

good show from lankans really, as always it was lankan bowling then batting. well samaraweera was spacial

ODI cricket is terrible in SL TBH. Dambulla has the worst wicket to bat on and at Premadasa you just need to win the toss and bat first but I still think in this match, Samaraweera's innings was so important for SL as he scored half of the runs in the innings. Had he got out early cheaply like the others, we might have witnessed a good game.

khalek added 2 Minutes and 52 Seconds later...

Well even in day games, it's difficult to chase once you get a good score batting first cause the wicket gets a lot slower and the ball holds up.
