Two men in the Championship... We're back!!!

As Maney has abandoned my story, I am only going to comment on Trev's fabulous work. A superb 6-0 win has put you in exactly the right frame of mind for the league. Come on trev!

Hang about! I was just away from PC for a couple of days!
(and the comment I posted in yours was before I checked this, I swear!)

As Maney has posted in my thread, I will comment :p

Right Maney. What a fantastic job you are doing at Town. 3-0 isn't bad at all against the Romans and I can't say I'm surprised at Matt Richard's departure! Shame about Vainquer, but he'll be fighting fit before you know it! Great job you two.

Iirc, I think he's out for about 6 months... Which is gutting! Done his cruciates in or something like that.
Matt Richards really was poor for Ipswich, I'll let you know where he went, but I can't remember off the top of my head. As I said, you'll see how the Stoke game went, even after his ultimatum.

Two super 6-nil wins ;)

That's right, everyone jump on the Teague bandwagon :p!

'Cider Army' brush aside Wolves

Bristol City 4-1 Wolves

Newly promoted Bristol City easily brushed aside strong title challengers Wolves at Ashton Gate. With new manager Jack Teague facing his first competitive game he couldn't have asked for anything more from his players, who comfortably defeated a strong Wolves line-up. It was a great performance from start to finish, this shown by Bristol's first and last goals coming in the first and last minutes.

Brian Wilson set the tone for the day with a fine 1st minute free kick from the edge of the area. Darren Byfield doubled City's lead in the 18th with a cool finish, but Andrew Keogh managed to pull one back 5 minutes later to keep Wolves' hopes alive.

Enoch Showunmi then used his 6ft 7in stature to head home City's 3rd in front of a jubulous Atyeo stand. The 3 points were secured by Darren Byfield when he linked up with Martin Elliot in stoppage time.

Darren Byfield's two goals and all-round good performance earned him the 'Man of the Match' award.

Darren Potter, who went off with concussion after a clash with Lee Johnson, is expected to be out for a few days to a week.

Bristol City boss Jack Teague said that his team's performance was 'gritty' and 'very promising'. "I'm ecstatic with the result. What a dream start to my first professional coaching job. I expected a tough game and that's what we got, but a gritty, determined performance from the boys made sure we got the 3 points."

Teague went on to say that this season will be tough, but with no pressure on their shoulders they could easily surprise a few. "We know this season will be hard. There's no doubt about it. But that's what makes it exciting. That's what makes wins like this even more enjoyable. We don't have the pressure of fans or media expecting wins left, right and centre. You never know in football, and this season we could easily surprise a few."

Wolves Mick McCarthy was disappointed at how is side got over confident of a win. "I think we expected to win, which is not the sort of frame of mind a team should be in. We had chances, the shots at goal will show you that, we just couldn't finish. Full credit to Jack (Teague) and his boys. They could well do better than expected this season. Back to the drawing board for our next game against Swindon in the League Cup."

Jack Teague - Bristol City Manager - Blog
Match day 1 - A dream start

The big day had finally arrived. After an 11 or so day gap we were ready to face promotion hopefuls Wolves. I was glad that we were playing at Ashton Gate for this first game. It was a great opportunity for the fans to show their passion and support, hopefully lifting the boys to a higher level of performance. There had been little news in the transfer market, although we were waiting on a work permit for Yoon Sock-Young from South Korea. To the team, and boy did I have a hard job selecting the side. Ivan Sproule was unavailable for our next 4 games for a ban he had picked up at Hibs last season, so that meant Scott Murray would be starting at right mid. Brian Wilson's fine pre-season performances earned him a starting place at left mid in front of Michael McIndoe who was left on the bench. Darren Byfield and Enoch Showunmi partnered up top, Lee Johnson and Marvin Elliot in the middle, and Jamie McCombe and skipper Louis Carey at the back.

My side:

------------------------A.Basso-----------------------
B.Orr------L.Carey ©---J.McCombe---J.McAllister
S.Murray-----L.Johnson-----M.Elliot-----B.Wilson
--------------D.Byfield-----E.Showunmi----------

Subs: D.Noble, T.Vaskó, L.Trundle, M.Christie & M.McIndoe

I was expecting to have to wait for a few chances after we had settled down to see us have a sight at goal. But there was no such thing, we got the dream start thanks to Brian Wilson. 49 seconds into our 1st game in the Championship and we were 1-nil up! A fine free kick from the edge of the area slotted perfectly over the wall and into the corner. My emotions got to me as I ran down the touchline towards the Atteo Stand to celebrate with the very people I was celebrating with a few years ago. It settled down a touch, Wolves beginning to come back from their early shock and having a few chances.

No sooner than I thought that somebody was going to score, and it looked most likely to be them, Byfield got our 2nd. Showunmi gathered the ball wide on the left and placed a perfect ball through the middle to Byfield. Byfield made no mistake, placing it past Murphy to send our fans into raptures again! 2-0 up after 18 minutes. I couldn't have wished for a better start. Although we were soon brought down to earth with some superb skill from Andrew Keogh. His run and goal showed us the class that this league was. Skipping past our defenders as if they were never there and finishing with ease. They had a few more chances as did we, but it stayed at 2-1 until the break.

A quick team talk, although the guys didn't need to be told much. Again they shared most of the chances and possession, but we were holding tight to that lead. Then, just as they were starting to build up real pressure, a nice bit of build up ended in Murray's cross being headed home by Showunmi. I just clenched my fists this time, but I was so happy with the state of things. I told the lads to now keep tight at the back. There was no way we were going to let them back into the game. The lads did brilliantly, Vaskó coming on and then towards the end Noble and Christie. Then we got that final goal that put the icing on the cake. Byfield linked up with Elliot who played a one-two and Byfield lashed home our fourth. A fitting way to end a fantastic game for us.

I couldn't have dreamt of anything as good as this. An amazing start to life as Bristol City manager in the Championship. I just hoped this was just the start of a great run of results...

Parkin the difference at the Britannia

Jon Parkin put in a Man of the Match performance in the first game of the 2008 season to guide Stoke City to victory. Parkin scored two crucial goals in the first half to take Stoke from 1-0 down to 2-1 victors. Tommy Miller had put Ipswich into the lead, but constant pressure and possession prevailed to give Stoke the three points.

The game started well for Ipswich, new boss Ben Manning looking to get a win under his belt in his first competitive game in charge. Ipswich opened up on 19 minutes, Tommy Miller smashing home a wonderful free kick 20 yards out.

Ten minutes later it was all square, Jon Parkin managing to squeeze a shot past Shane Supple, who should have done better with the straight shot. Matt Richards then played a dodgy pass back to Jason de Vos which flew straight past him and into the path of Parkin. Parkin took a touch and launched it past Supple for the second time in 10 minutes.

From then on it was easy for Stoke, limiting Ipswich to just 6 shots on goal all game. Jon Parkin picked up Man of the Match for his 2 goals.

The reason Parkin was on the pitch was because Richard Cresswell had to come off 25 minutes in after colliding with team mate De Vos. Cresswell has appeared to bruised a rib and won't be out for too long.

Tony Pulis was extremely happy with his team's performance and was glad to get a win over a tricky Ipswich side. "The lads performed brilliantly today. Couldn't have asked for anything more, and I think we thoroughly deserved it. Ipswich are a tricky side to play, and I'm sure the new boss will guide them to good things. Really happy that we have started off the season with a win. Hopefully a sign of things to come."

Newly appointed boss Ben Manning was disappointed by the loss, but thinks his team will bounce back next week. "Not a great start to the season if I'm honest. After such a good pre-season it would have been nice to have gotten going with a win, but we were beaten by a good Stoke side. After seeing the performance today there will be changes, I can guarantee that.

Ben Manning went on to say that he hopes with a bit more resilience and luck that they will win against Crystal Palace next Saturday. "With any luck, and a bit of resilience from the boys, we will be off the mark at the second time of asking next week."

Huge thanks to treva for doing this, although he did volunteer, I am indebted to him. He will be doing stuff like this, and if you see a crappier one, it's me!

That unfortunate after taking the lead against Stoke. Actually when you think about it, you should have expected to lose with the way Ipswich play away from home:p.

Three Clubs in for Two Town youngsters

Wigan have made an enquiry for Shane Supple yet again, and yet again I have told them he isn't moving for less than ?250k.

Stoke City have offered ?920k for starlet Owen Garvan, and I negotiated the offer and have told them he isn't moving for less than ?975k.

Crystal Palace offered a straight player-for-player swap with Leon Cort the proposed other player involved. This didn't quite cut it, and I gave them the same price as Stoke.

My opening game was a trip to Stoke at the Britannia Stadium. A baptism of fire, certainly; an unwinnable game, probably; a crappy experience, we will have to see.

I have no idea at all why the Football League told us to play in white, either of our other kits would have been better, but it's by the by, and I am certainly not going to do a Fergie and blame the kits.
We lined up as follows:
1. Shane Supple
5. Alex Bruce
3. Matt Richards
35. Tommy Smith
4. Jason De Vos ?
10. Tommy Miller
7. Owen Garvan
29. Ed Upson
19. Jon Walters
8. Rob van Boekel
39. Fraizer Campbell
Subs:
27. Neil Alexander
2. James Wilson
36. Liam Trotter
11. Liam Barratt
13. Bjorn Runstrom

A young side, but one with bags of potential and I had high hopes, as long as their young legs could keep them going for the whole game.

The first chance fell to Stoke, a 13th minute corner allowing Gabby Zakuani to have a header on goal superbly saved by Shane in goal.
Six minutes later, we scored our opening goal of the season. A push by Matteo on the explosive Campbell bringing a free kick in a decent position. Tommy Miller stepped up, and the ball deflected off of the wall into the goal. 0-1 Town and the place was very quiet apart from the small number of fans that had travelled up to watch my first game.
Step up Matt Richards. He intercepted the ball well, and somehow contrived to give the ball away to Liam Lawrence, who slipped a slide-rule pass into Jon Parkin, who easily slotted the ball past Shane in goal.
Ten minutes after this, Matt hadn't learnt his lesson, and yet again gave the ball away to Parkin, who literally sidefooted the ball into the net from twelve yards, with the only player in his vicinity being Shane, who had no chance.

Matt Richards 2-1 Ipswich Town @ Half Time

The second half ran without any real action of note, and my first league game ever as a manager of Ipswich ended in defeat.

Maney2k8 added 15 Minutes and 59 Seconds later...

Keep the comments coming guys! :)

Wait til we get properly into the season! :D

hang on you slagged me off for having Matt Richards in my Coventry side now your playing him! :p

He probably slagged you off about playing him because he's done so badly for himself. Two shocking performances, and like Ben said "Richards 2-1 Ipswich"

Bristol City stumble away at Walsall

Walsall 2-0 Bristol City

Bristol City have been knocked out of the League Cup in the first round against Walsall, suffering a 2-0 defeat. Two first half goals from Adam Nowland and Darren Wrack gave Walsall a surprising victory to knock out the Championship side. Finishing was the determining factor, Bristol City wasting 9 chances on goal whilst Walsall hit all their 6 shots on target.

It was only three minutes in when Adam Nowland latched on to Mawete Junior's through ball and slotted it past Adriano Basso in the City goal.

Just when Bristol City did not want to give up a goal was when Darren Wrack made it 2-0. A shot from Adam Nowland rebounded off Carey and fell straight into the path of Wrack just 10 yards out. Basso could do nothing as Wrack placed the ball past his right hand into the corner.

Walsall manager Richard Money was 'delighted' with the win and said it was a testament to how hard his side had worked. "I am delighted. A brilliant result for us, and I think we deserved it. All our hard work paid off. After our loss last Saturday where we hit the target once out of 8 shots, I'm really pleased we hit all our 6 shots on target."

When asked who he would like in the next round, he said that it didn't matter. "Not to bothered who we draw, I reckon we can take on any of the big names!"

Jack Teague felt his side worked hard for a victory, but that things just sometimes don't go your way. "The boys worked hard. We felt we could progress far in this competition, but it's not to be. Finishing was poor, especially seeing as we hit four past Wolves on Saturday. Sometimes things go against you, that's football. We'll pick ourselves up and hopefully we can get 3 points at Barnsley on Saturday."
