Unofficial Buildup to the 2010/11 Ashes

Agree with your post that North , Hussey and Hauritz wont be easily dropped.North does indeed score random centuries. He did score a very good century in the first innings of that second test verses India, but if i was a selector that wouldn't be enough cause he needed to do well as a whole in the two test and he only average in the 30's( an remember his constant failures meant he he needed to repay the team more than just one century with an average less than 40.North's random spin shouldn't be enough to keep him in the team, his job first and foremost is to keep scoring runs and that he isnt doing.Hussey well he has really been short of form for awhile. One of Hussey or North has to go.Simple as that.Conservative selection , has meant we're seeing australia having a very conservative mind set even when they are in very strong positions to win a test.Hughes and Khawaja have both done brilliantly in their domestic career to date, so the options are there to replace one of Hussey or North .Our bowling well Hauritz has only really had that one really piss poor performance, i mean he hasn't been spectacular but people calling for his head after just this series is abit too premature.I'm no Hauritz fan but Haurtiz cant be drop cause of a two match series failure in india. Its ok if you believe for the first test its probably a fast bowling track and four seamers will be better then sure play four frontline quicks, but Huaritz should come straight back in ''other conditions''.My team would be:
1.Watson ( you cant really take him out of the opening spot now cause he's been brilliant there
2.Katich
3.Ponting
4.Clarke
5.Hussey
6.Khawaja( forget bowling option , if a guy isnt scoring there he should be dropped, and North isnt)
7.Haddin/Paine can go either way.
8.Johnson
9.Hauritz
10 Bollinger
11.Hilfenhaus ( been our best bowler for awhile now).

Here's my current mindset on Hussey, North and Hauritz. Keeping in mind that while I don't really like making changes if they aren't absolutely necessary.
Plan A - all 3 hit some form in the next month:
I play all 3 of them in Brisbane and give them probably 2 Tests each to prove that form isn't a fluke. Only change I'd make is to move Marcus North up to #4, move Clarke to 5 and Hussey to 6. Why? 1) Right now North is the most likely to make a big hundred, so that's a good reason to put him in first of those 3, 2) North is the most likely to fail, so you don't want him batting #6, you want him higher so that any potential collapse he causes can be fixed by 2 specialist batsmen, not your keeper, 3) Hussey's best innings always seem to be with the tail, 4) it puts Clarke and North next to each other - the combo that did so well in 2009, 5) it alternates left/right handers
Plan B - if all 3 are just OK in the next month:
I boot Hussey and keep North and Hauritz. North and Hauritz get 2 Tests to do something. Why Hussey? The more I sit back and think about these Ashes, the more I'm convincing myself that Hussey should be the first to go - not North. An important reason being that I don't think the English are scared of him anymore (and of course his very average recent form). He scored that century at the Oval, but that masked an otherwise very poor series. He's been very patchy in both ODI series against Eng since then too. I think Hussey has to do well in the next month to keep his spot. With Hussey out I bring in one of Ferguson, Khawaja or Hughes. Hughes would be my first reaction, but some fiddling with the order would have to be done, either he or Watson would go to #6. I wouldn't mind seeing Hughes at #6 (unlike others), and I don't want to mess with Watto's good form too much by shifting him, but you also have to consider Watson's workload and another right hander v Swann in the middle would be good. Katich shouldn't move down, he's looked bad v spin lately and as a leftie I'm afraid Swann might eat him for lunch down the order.
Plan C - if all 3 are rubbish in the next month:
I boot all 3. I'd bring in Smith and McDonald as the spinner and 4th quick (joining whoever I picked out of Hughes, Khawaja and Ferguson, to replace Hussey). McDonald is there to keep it quiet, bowl straight and bowl fairly quick overs plus provide the batting depth that becomes a concern with Smith's selection. McDonald's there for defence, Smith is there to ATTACK! Deciding who bats #6 out of Smith/Haddin/McDonald doesn't really worry me, they all have arguments for the spot, but I'd probably go with Haddin first. If Ryan Harris can get fit and bowl his overs quickly, I'd consider him along with McDonald. Also, Steve O'Keefe might get close to the spinner gig, because he'd be a very decent #8 bat too.

Bottom line is that it's a very important month of cricket ahead for the 3 guys on the hotseat.

We need to win the ashes, there's no way North can bat at number 4 for australia. He fails way to much.I understand your logic but that would only be possible if North got past 20 a lot more than he does.McDonald wont play for australia anytime soon.We really don't need an all rounder( unless that all rounder is top class) since:
1.This is Test cricket, you pick specialist and all rounders who are top class. Not guys who are bits and pieces all rounders.
2.Australia don't need an all rounder , we already have one in Watto. What we need is 4 really good specialist bowlers who we can rely on.McDonald isn't one of those 4.Smith isn't ready quite yet.
You also say that McDONALD is there to provide batting depth that becomes a concern with Smith selection. If you have concerns about SMith then why pick him?Smith's bowling isn't good enough yet unfortunately and it appears you're concern more about his batting not being up to it.So if thats the case then he shouldnt be picked, even if he bats at 7.Why not pick the best 6 available bats and the best 4 available bowlers plus a keeper. We already have a fifth bowler in Watto.

The all-rounder point is worth mentioning. It is odd australia have stuck so defiantly with this line-up as, at the time, it seemed to be cobbled together from the rather poorly selected squad of players on the ashes tour.

I do think they'd probably benefit from totally reselecting the team. Forgetting form and loyalty to players and just sitting down and saying "right, the best XI in australia right now. Openers?"

I would have agreed with you heavily War before the '09 Ashes, but IMO Hauritz has really improved a lot and actually bowled decently in that India series, it was just the the batsmen were just too good at milking him and the pitches didn't help the spinners much. Still think he's got a great looking drift and line to the right-handers, mixes it up well.

Haha what?. Hauritz bowled decently in IND?. Surely you dont believe that.

The pitches weren't ranging turners, yes, but it had enough spin in then for any good spinner worth his salt as a test bowler to be a potent enough wicket taking threat. As the Indian spinner where againts the AUS batsmen.

Hauritz on the other failed to be a wicket-taking threat or provide any form on control.

I have seen no improvement in Hauritz bowling since the Ashes my friend. He was the same on his debut in Mumbai 04 as he is now.

Hauritz has to be dropped.

You haven't seen no improvement in Hauritz? If you don't believe he is good enough to play for australia thats fine but Hauritz has improve game after game since coming to this australian team.He was just coming from injury so i wouldn't read too much into that Indian tour.I agree that he needs to do more on 5th day turning wickets. But he did fine against pakistan, yes i know it's only Pakistan. There's far more guys who needs to get the boot before Hauritz does.I'm not Hauritz fan but he has done better than any spinner australia has chosen post Warne. For me it's either Hauritz plays or 4 Frontline quicks.Right now Hauritz and McGain are the two best spinners by some distance in Australia.I'm not against the 4 quicks policy but to dismiss Hauritz after just 2 test in India that's a bit harsh.Ponting needs to show more faith in his spinner or just play 4 frontline quicks.

:yes.Agreed ,the batting has collapse every series. If this batting line up do fail in the ashes ( collapse at crucial times) it would be no surprise since they've been doing that for a while now.Surely you would think changes would have been made since the third ashes test team in 2009.We have now slump to 5th.Maybe if we need different results we need to try something different Hilditch.

But you gotta hand it to the Indians, the played him extremely well. It almost looked as if it didn't matter what Hauritz was gonna bowl, they would look to attack him anyway.

Unless of course we tried some negative line tactics like SA did with Harris, but Hauritz is an offie so that would have never worked.

Indians are always great players of spin, so its not really surprising what happened to Hauritz. He is an ordinary TEST spinner, but is still good enough to be Australia's best. I think he may not be as Australias top 5 bowlers but going into a TEST match without a genuine spinner, may be a foolish decision.

This. Australia should have been doing this since the end of the 2008 tour to the west indies.

As i mentioned before in that thread on the main page. Other average/decent spinners who have toured India in the last 15 years. Such as Greg Matthews, John Bracewell, Adams, Boje, Giles, Krejza have managed to take 5 wickets hauls when they got helpul turners in India or at various points captains have been able to depend on them to block uo & end.

So its not impossible to do either in Indian regardless of how superb IND batsman play spin. Haurtiz failed to do both spectacularly.

It was surprising for me when Aussie all-rounder has had said he'll keep his emotions under control on the tour of Australia in what is expected to be a heated atmosphere in front of big crowds during the Ashes. I guess it was a good gesture.

For all the aussies here some good news- channel 9 has finally done what Ive waited for for years. The cricket this summer will be shown on a seperate digital channel, away from the bloody News and A Current Affair, but only the HD broadcast. Good for me, and I assume stacks of HD viewers. We'll get the full coverage for every match for the first time EVER!

Dunno, dont know the details, just know its the 3rd 9 digital channel, not sure if its on now. Pretty cool though! Sure hate missing out on the end of every day of the Adelaide tests, some of the Perth test, not anymore!

Yeah, GEM. There is no Nine HD any more, so that's the only channel to put HD sport on anyway.

New channels like 7mate and GO have come out but I'm not sure about one for 9. Will check now.

Well I just found a new 9 channel called GEM Western Vic. Not sure if this will show the Ashes?

Oh ████ forgot to read all the pages before posting :facepalm
