England win Adidas Cup - Heart Breaking defeat for India!

HEART BREAKING DEFEAT FOR INDIA! ENGLAND WIN TROPHY!
K.PIETERSEN 122

THATS IT!!! ENGLAND HAVE WON THE MATCH AND WITH IT, THEY ARE THE ADIDAS TROPHY CHAMPIONS. WHAT A STUNNING COMEBACK FROM ENGLAND!! NO ONE EXPECTED THEM TO WIN AFTER INDIA RATTLED UP 307 IN THE FIRST INNINGS. AND ALL THIS HAS BEEN POSSIBLE DUE TO TWO MEN, PIETERSEN AND PAUL COLLINGWOOD WHO HAVE TURNED THIS MATCH ON ITS HEAD AND HAVE ROMPED ENGLAND HOME AND HAVE WON THE CUP!!!

englandwin2iu.jpg

The Indian team is right now terribly disappointed. They do not know where they went wrong today. They made an imposing target and reduced England to 139/4 after 25 overs. But England through Pietersen and Collingwood have staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of ODI cricket. This match surely is a exact replica of the Natwest Trophy final 2002 with England here winning in place of India. THERE HE IS!!! MICHEAL VAUGHAN RUNNING DOWN THE FIELD AND CELEBRATING WITH THE PLAYERS!!! THE WHOLE ENGLISH TEAM ONTO THE GROUND!!!! THIS IS AWESOME STUFF!!! It will surely take this Indian team quite sometime to get over this defeat at the hands of England. Khan and the Indian team shaking hands with Giles,Vaughan and the whole team.

The celebration is not going to die down. Lets have a chat with today's Hero No.1, Kevin Pietersen. Dean Jones is down with him for the chat!

DJ: CONGRATS KEVIN!! WHAT AN AWESOME INNINGS? ABSOLUTELTY BREATHTAKING?

Kevin: Thanks Dean. Its a bgi achievement for me to get this century and more importantly, win England the tournament. This ranks right there as my best ever innings.

DJ: You seemed to be very aggressive right from the start today!
Kevin: Yes. But thats my natural game. I am an aggressive batsmen. I planned to settle down for a few balls at the beginning and then took off.

DJ: How was the bowling of India today?
Kevin: They were awesome till the 25th over. We thought we might not make it. but after that, somewhere they seemed to slip up and we took full advantage

DJ: Collingwood gave you great support!
Kevin: Paul was awesome today! Without him, I might not have been speaking to you right now. His innings was the most vital and it helped me at the other end.

DJ: OK OK!!! I WILL ALLOW YOU TO CELEBRATE WITH THE TEAM. THERE HE IS, KEVIN PIETERSEN, THE HERO OF ENGLAND'S HEROIC VICTORY HERE AT WELLINGTON. OVER TO THE COMMENTARY BOX.

G.Chappell: Thats a tragic end to the tournament for the team for which I am taking over as the coach. India switched off after the 25th over. They can surely regroup. They have played brilliantly in the tournament and deserved better than England to win the trophy!

Presentation, Match Reports and Series reports to follow!

anyway excellent performnce by pietersen

Nothing wrong with indiancricketer's words. even i thought india would win this easily. but i forgot that i was playing on a wicket full of runs once england got down to 139/5. tried to bowl lot of wicket taking balls but ended up bowling half volleys and full length deliveries.

Terrific win for England!

In the end, a mind blowing win for England in the Adidas Cup final. In a tournament totally dominated by India, England stole the cup in the last moment from India with a gritty display by their middle order batsmen. India never expected to lose this trophy. Even in today's match, they had set a big target of 308 to win for England. That they lost is only their bad luck.

The England innings never really took off until after the 25th over. The men at the centrestage were Pietersen and Collingwood, the unsung heroes for England. They batted brilliantly, scoring boundaries at a fairly easy clip. They never got seperated till the very end until they just needed a few runs to win. Credit also should go to Micheal Vaughan for playing a good valuable knock of 33 that helped the side when they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Series Report:

A wonderful series. The first two matches were not very exciting and resulted in easy wins for India and England. But the series got undergoing in a big way in the third match between India and New Zealand which India won by 1 wicket off the last ball courtesy a brilliant 95* from Ajay Jadeja. From then on, every match has been a very close affair and all due to the performance of the players. The fourth match resulted in an easy win for India on a green nasty track. The fifth match between England and New Zealand was won by New Zealand off the last over. And the last league match ended in a tie with New Zealand not getting the points they needed for a final berth. England entered the final and no one predicted an England victory here. But England have belied all those expectations and have emerged champions.

Presentation Ceremony

M.Crowe: Welcome to the presentation ceremony of one of the exciting ever series seen in ODI cricket. England have emerged the winners of the series by 3 wickets! First of all, I would like to call the losing captain Ganguly to receive the runners up cheque of $50,000. Sorry Ganguly. You guys played well but lost out in the end

Saurav: We are really disappointed. We should have won here. We played very well. Sehwag was amazing in that hundred. But again, credit to Pietersen and Collingwood. They did here what Yuvraj and Kaif did at Lords in 2002.

M.Crowe: A good innings from you today?
Saurav: Was happy with it but all happiness has disappeared after this loss.

M.Crowe: better luck next time, Saurav. Now, for the series of awards to be presented. First, the Man of the final. And it goes to the hero today, Kevin Pietersen.

(Pietersen collects his cheque of $1,000 from the dias)

M.Crowe: Congrats Kevin. A marvellous innings.
Kevin: I owe all this to my team. They have been behind me always encouraging me.

M.Crowe: Was it easy batting under lights?
Kevin: yes. wasnt very tough though our top order could have applied themselves even more.

M.Crowe: Thanks Kevin. Now for the Man of the series award. Goes to Marcus Trescothick for his valuable 273 runs which is the highest of this series.

trescobatraise.jpg

M.Crowe: Great series Tres. Your thoughts?
M.Tres: Yes. It has been a great series for me. I am very happy that our team has won the trophy. It means more to me.

M.Crowe: Now, for the Most Valuable player of the tournament. It goes to Virender Sehwag.

13_7_2004_sehwag.jpg

M.Crowe: Congrats Sehwag. But sad that you could not translate it into a trophy win

V.Sehwag: Yes. We should have won today. But credit to england. Personally after a few lacklustre matches, it has been a great series for me!

M.Crowe: The Most No. of sixes is jointly won by Sehwag, Pietersen and Geriant Jones. The Most No. of catches award is won by Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni. Now for the big one!! THE TROPHY!!! I would like to call upon Micheal Vaughan to come up on stage and receive the winners cheque of $1,00,000 and the Adidas Trophy

(Micheal Vaughan receives the trophy from the NZB president!)

vaughantrophy-2539.jpg

M.Crowe: Congrats Vaughan. A terrific performance!
Vaughan: All credit to the boys, especially Pietersen and Collingwood. They turned the match for us today. Quite similar to what Yuvraj and Kaif did against us at the Lords in 2002.

M.Crowe: Did you feel England could win this match?
Vaughan: Not until the 40th over when we needed 71 off 60 balls!!!

M.Crowe: How does this win mean to the side?
Vaughan A lot! We have been improving our game in the past season and this is one to prove that we are indeed improving a lot. We're trying to bridge the gap between us and Australia.

M.Crowe: Congrats Vaughan. Thats all we have here from Wellington. We hop you have enjoyed the series. The next series would be the two tests between India and New Zealand. See you then! Bye!

Do you remember the "Predict your choices" contest where I had given 5 questions about the series result like winner of the series, man of the series, Most valuable player, most no. of sixes, and most no. of catches, etc. You ha got 3 out of 5 questions right.

yes.. they played so well only to falter at the final hurdle.. but thats india for us. consistently "inconsistent"

The team for the test series is going to be announced today! Stay tuned! The selection, which was supposed to be held before the final was postponed due to the selector's wish to watch the final and then decide! So, the team is being selected today! India is then going to play a 3 day warm up match against Northern Districts!
