RIP
Phillip Hughes who died on 19/11/09.

He will be burried next to Jaques, Rogers, McGain and Krejza whom all have shared his fate.
Seriously? He's 20. There's absolutely no need to rush and I'm sure injuries will open up a slot sooner or later.

It doesn't mean he will be the 1st one to be picked. Selectors will probably be scared to pick him again (Ashes experience), unless he scores many tons for NSW.

Same thing happened with Jaques, Rogers. After they been dropped, they never recovered.

^The selectors should be scared to pick him. If I were the opposition captain, I'd re-implement bodyline to Phil Hughes. You can't select a guy with a massive weakness like that. Sure he crunches anything outside off, but no one's gonna bowl to him there after what Flintoff and Harmison did to him.

I'd select Jaques AND Rogers ahead of him right now. Heck even Dave Warner looks less dodgy to me. BUT, as soon as Hughes can prove that he's fixed that problem, he needs to be selected ASAP, probably for Hussey and let Watson slide down.

Also, loved the Stuart Clark omission. We need to start forming the 2013 Ashes team, and while guys like Katich, Hussey, Ponting and even Haddin may not make it that far, we can't drop all of them at once and at least those guys are pretty locked into the first XI, unlike Stuart Clark. Replace Lee and Clark with Bollinger and Clint McKay and we'll be looking OK for the future.

Surprised we didn't go with a 13 man squad as Clarke requires daily treatment so who knows what will happen with him.

I'm sure someone has been earmarked. Would be interesting to know who it was, but i think it would be a highly contentious call (Hughes or not) so i can't blame the selectors for not naming someone. More trouble than it's worth for them.

Hughes has developed a method for playing the short ball from what I saw in the Champions League. Should only be a matter of time before he starts piling on the runs in Shield cricket.

Hughes is just 20 years old. He has allot of cricket ahead of him. And if Im not mistaken Jaques got injured and others stepped in and filled his spot. Rogers was given a chance and he didn't take full advantage of it.
Katich doesn't have that much cricket left in him and I'm sure Hughes is next in line for that spot. Or if Hughes proves that he has sorted out his weaknesses and scores runs in domestic cricket he will get called up and Watson would probably move down the order.

obvious side is

Watson
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
North
Haddin
Johnson
Siddle
Hauritz
Hilfenhaus

really strong side, bowling looks really good and so does the batting. 4 quality pace options and Hauritz seems to have picked up his game as of late. North also offers a spin option.

have to say that Clark should have been in the team. I know what sifter said makes since but Ashes are 3 years away.

Gotta love the domestic side hammering the tourist :) Not the best Queensland lineup but they are going real well at 1/173. The inform Carseldine is still to come as well.

Yea the bowling doesn't look to be that threatening. Obviously I haven't seen any of the match but Benn hasn't done much. This doesn't look like a good sign, to be struggling against a 2nd string Queensland side. Hope the guys can step it up and put on a good performance.

TBF to Benn the Aussie pitches are tough on most spinners and the Gabba is known for it's spin. Benn will probably struggle this series and the Windies probably will be better off using part time spin and going in with a seam attack. The Adelaide test, Benn will be handy but the WACA pitch is even less favourable to spin than the Gabba.

Thats why I would have preferred if they went with Tonge or Taylor in this warm up. The only good test he had was against England, WI have much better spinners in domestic cricket in my opinion.
With Gayle gone and his part time spin probably not available for the 1st test Benn will surely play. Sarwan is the only part time spin option that will play the 1st test for sure, Deonarine is another option but he might not play.

It helps with Nash and Bravo capable of bowling a few overs so there isn't quite the need for 4 specialist seamers. We are now in the same boat with no reason to go into a match with 4 pacemen since Watson is more than capable of filling the 4th paceman role.

Tbh I would have loved to have seen Hughes selected for the first test, Roach V Hughes would of been fun to watch.

Cricket Australia are doing the right thing though, Hughes needs to actually score runs before being brought back into international cricket, it shouldn't just be given back to him.

Yea it does with those 2 available there is a spot for a specialist spinner but Benn isn't the best option.
With Gayle out and Tonge not playing in this warm up I have no idea what the actual squad will look like.

Now looking quite hopeless for the tourists. Queensland passed the WI score with 9 wickets in hand thanks to a huge maiden first class century by Nick Kruger.

anyone know if its the pitch or just the WI bowlers and batsman not doing well.

The Gabba pitch is usually very helpful in the morning but the Windies didn't take advantage and now are paying for it.
