Hobbs vs. Sachin...very good discussion to make...

We've seen Sachin, and we all know he is pure genius. But none of us have seen Hobbs live, so we can't account for his talent or ability. Maybe he was Dravid-esque? Not many shots, but legendary concentration, and fed off poor deliveries whilst keeping good ones at bay?

Threads like these generally go nowhere. However the debate seemed to be healthy,if the early posts are a sign.

Choosing the second best of all-time would not be fair according to me.We have had different eras in cricket even after the Don retired. The era of uncovered pitches, the era before the helmets and big bats and the era when the pacemen ruled cricket were all blessed with special batsmen.Hobbs,Gavaskar,Zaheer Abbas,Sobers,Graeme Pollock,Barry Richards,Viv Richards etc would all be in the running for the 2nd best of all-time great batsmen during the eras in which they played.

The post 90s era clearly has thrown up Lara,Tendulkar and Ponting as the front-runners. With all due respect to Inzamam,Yousuf,Chanderpaul,Sangakkara and others, the above mentioned players are in a league of their own.

I would find it difficult to pick one player out of all the greats. From among the greats of the game that I have watched all these years,I`d pick Lara and Sachin.

Hmm. Hobbs I've never seen but when you look at the facts he's very impressive. Tough decision. Sobers for me is without any doubt that second greatest cricketer ever but for me I would go for Lara because he's my favourite.

Nobody's talking about Sir Viv! Strange. I will rate him as the most aggresive test batsman of all-time. Anyway, I'll go with Sachin with Sir Jack Hobbs, Greame Pollock - and all the others mentioned in the poll a tied third. You can't compare any of them. They were Gods of their era (except for two). They are superb, that's it. But I think Sachin is slightly (0.001 percent) better than them. The thing which makes sachin unique is his consistency. Look, he's been playing cricket for about 20 years, has undergoen three/four major operations, still scoring hundreds and fifties. Sixteen thousand ODI runs and counting! It's amazing you know, I just sit here and think, how can a man do this!

really hard to decide, lots of great batsman in that poll. Sobers, Lara or Sachin but I cant decide.

n00b's opinion this but here goes...I'd say Sachin Tendulkar. He is a genius, a legend of the game. The highest run scorer in Test cricket and the most centuries. All that topped off with an amazing 54.27 average. Plus when I began watching cricket, it was Sachin that I watched. He was a joy to watch. I can't really say Hobbs because I haven't actually seen him bat before. But if his average does justice to his batting, I bet it'll be great to watch. All in all, Sachin Tendulkar because he rules...just like Man D rules.

I don't get two things. What is Greg Chappell and Ricky Ponting doing in the poll? Both of them were/are great batters. But second greatest of alltime!!! Lol

I know, an average of 56.72 with 37 hundreds is terrible in Test Cricket :noway

 N00b.

Ricky Ponting's regarded as possibly the 2nd greatest Australian batsman of all-time after Bradman. He averages 56 in Test cricket, with 37 Hundreds, he had to be a candidate.

As for Chappell, he had a fantastic record. 7000 Test runs at 53 with 24 hundreds playing in the 70's and 80's in an era dominated by some fantastic pace bowling. He was a class batsman, and is one that's often overlooked in these sorts of polls, he definitely deserves to be up there.

Who else would you have in the poll KC?

I wont be surpised if I see Pieterson and Sehwag in that list in 5 years time. Probably Smith too if he keeps playing the innings that he played against England and Aus.
