Yorkshire In Control Despite Azhar Heroics
At Headingly

Yorkshire posted a decent score on a green wicket to put Surrey in a spot of trouble at Headingly. 233 for 9 on this pitch should be a challenging total for Surrey, but with the players they have to come in to bat, it looks set to be an interesting second half of the game. Azhar Mahmood kept Yorkshire in check with 5 wickets but he went at 6 an over. Mark Butcher also proved to be expensive with 30 runs coming from his 3 overs, but he arguably bowled the ball of the day to dismiss dangerman Ian Harvey.

From Briggs View
Problems yet again for Briggs in the shorter version of the game as he failed with the bat once more. He scored 9 before being caught by a fantastic diving catch by old man Graeme Thorpe who showed no signs of a bad back with that effort. Briggs needs to sort out his batting as at this moment in time, only his bowling is saving him from being dropped in this version of the game.

Briggs came in after some good batting by the opening three

It took a stunner from Thorpe to get rid of him

Briggs was clearly dissapointed to have failed yet again

Well.... he came in with 30 overs gone, so I suppose he was trying to push the score on. But Briggs needs a One Day score soon, 23 as a highest score from 7 innings is poor when compared to his Four Day stats.

I think he is experiencing a Sourav Ganguly run of form in the shorter version of the game!

one more failure for briggs with the bat in one days. I think briggs need to pay more attention to his batting now because he has already shown his worth with the ball. He needs to perform well in both one days and tests if he wants a place for himself in the team and we all know he is fully capable of doing that.
I wont be surprised if he soon finds a place in test team of England

Yorkshire Move One Step Closer To Promotion
At Headingly

Yorkshire defeated Surrey by 67 runs in the Totesport League today to move one step closer to promotion to the first division. Surrey never got going in the game and despite a good opening partnership, wickets kept falling at regular intervals to dampen Surrey's hopes of winning the game. Scott Newman top scored for Surrey with 38 but he was not helped by his team mates who failed to keep with the run rate. All the Yorkshire bowlers took a wicket with Shaun Briggs taking 3 and Ian Harvey took 2 as Yorkshire look set for promotion.

From Briggs View
Despite coming into the attack and getting hammered around by Graeme Thorpe, Briggs bowled quite will in the innings and will be pleased to have taken 3 wickets. He was expensive but that in part was due to him bowling the last few overs. His 3 wickets included that of Graeme Thorpe which will of delighted Briggs as it really looked as if he was taking a shine to the young bowler by going after him. Briggs also caused a lot of trouble for Butcher and Newman during his spells of bowling and overall will be happy with his performance.

Shaun Briggs 8.4-1-43-3
1st Over: Thorpe welcomes Briggs into the attack by hitting him for first a 4 and then a huge 6 straight down the ground
2nd Over: WICKET! Briggs strikes back from his first over mauling by dismissing Thorpe who was again going for the big show but mistimed it and saw it land straight in the hands of Kruis
3rd Over: Maiden over in which Butcher plays and misses at a wide one
4th Over: Briggs gets an edge from Newman which flies straight past slip and rolls to the boundary for 4
5th Over: Single from the over
6th Over: Single from the over, Briggs keeping it tight
7th Over: WICKET! The tight bowling pays off as Bicknell under pressure goes for a big shot which goes straight in the air and is easily caught by Wood
8th Over: Ramprakash helps himself to a boundary
9th Over: WICKET! Briggs finishes the Surrey innings with the wicket of Ormond but not before being hit for a 6 by Harbahjan and 4 by Ormond.

Stats For Shaun Briggs After Eight Games

Briggs poor batting in the one day game continues as he failed to make an impression again. His bowling, while it was expensive, was good and again he took wickets, and you feel it is those wickets which at the moment are keeping him in the one day team.

wouldnt be suprised to see briggs down the order for the next game, playing like a bowler at the moment in the one day form of the game. Maybe moving down the order would take a little pressure off him for now and see him adapt his game to this side a bit more

Yorkshire vs Leicestershire
Headingly

Having met only a few weeks ago in the Totesport League, Yorkshire and Leicestershire lock horns yet again for what should be an intreguing contest. Leicestershire should have the one up on Yorkshire having beaten them in that contest and with Yorkshire missing Vaughan and Hoggard who are away on England duty for the game, Yorkshire may find themselves on the backfoot if they do not start brightly. Before the game the conditions were checked by both captains.

So the green pitch is still there from the previous game played here against Surrey, and considering how well Yorkshire did batting and bowling on that pitch, they may be happy doing whatever on this pitch. White and Ackerman met up for the toss to see who would be doing what first.

So Craig White won the toss and elected to bat first, not a suprise really considering Yorkshire have won most games from batting first this season. HD Ackerman did not seem too dissapointed to have lost the tost however, so things may be interesting in the morning session. Both captains released their team sheets and the game was ready to get underway.
