Australia On The Verge As Yorkshire Tumble
At Headingly

Australia will have been releived to have bowled out Yorkshire on day 4 as it looked at one stage that Yorkshire might stage a huge shock. Yorkshire were going along nicely at one stage and at one point were 225 for 4, but that is when it all ended with the dismissal of Briggs which seemingly spelled the end of the Yorkshire fight back. Young Chris Taylor gave Yorkshire some hope with a very solid knock to support Briggs who was yet again the star of the Yorkshire innings. The Australian bowlers toiled away and got their rewards with Glenn McGrath picking up 4 wickets and 3 for Jason Gillespie as the Australians only require 95 runs to win with virtually a whole day to go.

From Briggs View
Yet again, Shaun Briggs frustrated the Aussie bowlers with a fantastic innings which at one stage looked to be saving the game for Yorkshire. Briggs formed some formidable partnerships, first with Anthony McGrath and then a fine partnership with young Chris Taylor which took Yorkshire past the Australian lead and meant they would have to bat again. Briggs played an array of shots in his 85 and would have been dissapointed to have got out when he nicked one behind where Adam Gilchrist took a fine diving catch to dismiss the youngster who walked off dejected but on the back of two fine knocks.

His innings was not without chance though as Warne had two shouts against him which were very close

But when Briggs did go, Gilchrist took a fine catch and it looked curtains for Yorkshire as Gillespie was delighted (Above/Below)

Briggs was clearly anoyed with himself at getting out at this stage, but the crowd still appreciated his fine effort

Tell me about it! I think that England call might come earlier than expected! (hint hint lol)

lol, i think he deserves it too! another great knock from the yorkshire prodigy!

Australia Stumble Home
At Headingly

Yorkshire showed their spirit today by not giving up even when the odds were stacked against them by pushing Australia all the way but eventually they did get home by the small margin of 4 wickets. The Aussies set out to get the total wiped out quickly and it would be that which nearly led to their downfall as the attacking strokes led to many batsmen being caught out. Some great bowling by Deon Kruis and Shaun Briggs who shared the wickets despite being hammered around the park nearly guided Yorkshire to a huge shock but Adam Gilchrist steered the Aussies home in typical style by hammering a 4 through the covers.

From Briggs View
Briggs took a pasting early on from Ricky Ponting as Yorkshire looked to have a plan to try and get the Australian captain out but some poor fielding and amazing hitting meant Briggs took quite a pasting from Punter. Briggs did manage to take 3 wickets, all of them just about caught on the boundary as the Aussies looked to take the attack to Yorkshire and the wickets of Langer, Ponting and Clarke will be one's which Briggs will remember for a long time.

Shaun Briggs 5-0-33-3
1st Over: WICKET! Briggs strikes straight away as Langer is out hooking, he had earlier hit Briggs away for 4 by hooking but the fact that the ball was in the air for a long time gave Briggs that bit of encouragement to go for it again.
2nd Over: Ponting and Martyn both get at Briggs and hit him away for 4
3rd Over: Briggs plan to Ponting not quite coming off as he helps himself to two boundaries
4th Over: WICKET! Ponting goes for the biggie but is caught on the boundary as the Aussies loose some quick wickets!
5th Over: WICKET! Amazing scenes at Headingly as the Yorkshire faithful think there team have a sniff of an unlikely victory as Clarke becomes the 6th wicket to fall hitting one straight in the air for a comfortable catch.

Warne and Gilchrist looked releived to have guided Australia home after a huge upset looked on the cards at one stage

Close, too close for the Aussies, they were hoping for a walkover after fielding that squad!

Yes they were but I have the feeling this second innings performance has something to do with the pacing for second inning chasing, ive read something on the forums about it and it obviously effects every team even the best ones!

Warne Predicts Big Future For Briggs

Shane Warne: Expects big things from Briggs

Shane Warne has tipped young Yorkshire starlet Shaun Briggs to go all the way at international level. The comments come as Warne watched first hand as Briggs single handedly took the Australian bowling apart in the recent tour match.

Warne said, "I think Shaun obviously has the talent to make it to the big time with England and obviously if he keeps going like he has this season it wont be long before he gets his chance"

But Warne also had a warning for Briggs saying that life at the top isnt all easy pickings like he has found at county level. "Obviously he (Briggs) has found it easy against county bowlers in England in English conditions, but once he goes out to places like India and Pakistan where pitches do a lot more for spinners, thats where he will be tested"

Yorkshire vs Derbyshire
Headingly

Fresh from the back of pushing Australia all the way in the recent tour match, Yorkshire welcome Derbyshire to Headingly in a game which could prove vital for Yorkshire's promotion hopes. A win for Yorkshire here would see them move a step closer to their return to the top flight of County Cricket and with Derbyshire the visitors, they would be expected to pick up the victory, but saying that Derbyshire are not a team to be wrote off and could cause an upset.

Craig White and Luke Sutton checked the conditions before the coin toss.

So to everyone's suprise the Yorkshire groundsman had prepared a green pitch and with the typical Leeds conditions of overcast clouds, the ball should swing around but it is warm so the clouds may not be there forever. Both captains met in the middle for the coin toss.

So, Craig White won the toss and elected to bat first. Judging on Yorkshire's success this season they have won the majority of games batting first and will be looking to continue that form today. The teams were announced soon after and play was ready to get underway.
