Stats For Shaun Briggs After Game Eleven
statsafter113au.jpg

Another improvement in Briggs one day game sees his average rise above 30 for the first time. His batting in the game today showed his potential as an opener and with him already making the number 4 position his own in the longer version of the game, he is slowly making the opening position his own in the shorter version too.

Somerset vs Yorkshire
Taunton

Yorkshire's promotion campaign moves on to the south of England as they travel to Somerset in what looks set to be a cracking encounter. With England players back from international duty for the time being, both teams will be at virtually full strength but if Somerset bat like they did in the meeting between the two teams earlier in the season which saw them fail to score over 200 runs combinded in both innings, then the game may yet again be a stroll for the in form Yorkshire. Both captains met in the middle and looked over the conditions before the coin toss.

A cracking pitch has been served up by the groundsman which looks perfect for batting and with hardly any cloud cover in the sky, you would think the winner of the toss would have an easy decision on his hands. The toss was due next.

So the toss went in favour of Graeme Smith and Somerset who obviously decided to bat in brilliant conditions. A big total on the board first up could set them up nicely but all will remain to be seen as the teams were announced and out came the players.

Some big scored one this pitch, are you up to it Briggesy, you could take a hammering here!

Hoggard Pegs Somerset Back
At Taunton

Returning England paceman Matthew Hoggard returned with a bang for Yorkshire today as he took 5 wickets in the Somerset first innings. Despite Hoggards heroics, Somerset still managed to score 304 before they declared just on the stroke of lunch on day 2. It was a slow scoring innings from Somerset who suprisingly on a fantastic pitch for batting, did at times struggle to keep up with the bounce and pace of Hoggard and Kruis in particular who caused them all sorts of trouble throughout. Hoggard seems to like playing against Somerset as he took 8 wickets in the first encounter between these two sides earlier in the season. Michael Burns top scored for Somerset with a fine 82 and Ian Blackwell score 50 too as Somerset will now look to gain control of the match.

From Briggs View
It was a tough innings from Shaun Briggs point of view as he took quite a bit of stick from the Somerset batsmen despite having some successes along the way. Briggs went at around 4 an over from him 18 overs which saw him pick up 2 wickets, and a vital one of Michael Burns who was starting to look dangerous when Briggs got him out playing a mistimed hook. Briggs will still take some hope from this bowling effort as even though he was not at his best, he still caused problems and picked up wickets which is something the best in the world do.

Shaun Briggs 18-1-74-2
1st Spell
1st Over: Graeme Smith welcomes Briggs to the attack by hitting him for boundaries on his first and fouth deliveries of the over
2nd Over: 4 runs picked up from the over as Briggs struggles with his line
3rd Over: Just a single from a better over
4th Over: 3 runs from the over
5th Over: More misery for Briggs as he bowls his first no ball of the innings
6th Over: Burns hammers Briggs to the boundary for two fours as Briggs looks on
End Of Spell 6-0-28-0
2nd Spell
7th Over: Briggs comes back better from his first spell by beginning with a maiden
8th Over: Burns hits Briggs away through the covers for 4
9th Over: 2 singles picked up from the over
10th Over: WICKET! Finally a success for Briggs as Burns mistimes an attempted pull shot straight into the air and is caught easily by Dawson. Two balls later, Blackwell is dropped by Kruis at square leg
11th Over: Fresh in, Parsons looks to get after Briggs and hits him away for 4
12th Over: 2 singles from the over
13th Over: Another good one from Briggs as only a single comes from the over
End Of Spell 7-1-18-1
3rd Spell
14th Over: Briggs is welcomed into his 3rd spell by being hammered away for 4 boundaries in the over! 3 of which go to Blackwell
15th Over: WICKET! Brilliant reply by Briggs as he clean bowls Turner after deciding to bowl around the wicket
16th Over: 4 runs picked up from the over
17th Over: Briggs keeps it tight with just a single from the over
18th Over: Another single from what would be Briggs final over of the innings

Yorkshire In Trouble As Somerset Rally
At Taunton

Yorkshire were left reeling at Taunton as they were bowled out for only 187 by Somerset in what was a spirited bowling performance. Little resistance was shown from Yorkshire with only one partnership between Briggs and McGrath really worth nothing, a 126 run partnership between the two dominated the innings and really showed how the rest of the team failed to contribute to the total. Andy Caddick and Ian Blackwell were the pick of the bowlers both picking up 3 Yorkshire wickets, but the one which counted the most was that of Briggs who finished the top scorer for Yorkshire with his 87 coming from only 100 deliveries, showing batting on this pitch is easy once you get in. Somerset take a 120 run lead into their second innings and must surely now be favourites to win the game with still over 2 days to play.

From Briggs View
Another fantastic innings from Briggs failed to get any support at all apart from that of Anthony McGrath who if it was not for their partnership, it would have left Yorkshire in a lot more trouble. Briggs dominated the partnership of 126, smashing boundaries all over the park and looked set for yet another century before Nixon McLean got him with a good piece of bowling after previously being hit for 16 by Briggs in his previous over. Overall it is clear from the scorecard that if it was not for Briggs innings, Yorkshire would have been in much more trouble and may have struggled to have even got over 100 in their first innings.

Somerset In Charge Despite Yorkshire Fightback
At Taunton

Yorkshire will require 338 runs to win after bowling out Somerset for 217 in their second innings. A good spirited fightback from Yorkshire restricted Somerset from amassing a large total which would have taken Yorkshire out of the game, but with 338 runs needed, Yorkshire will feel they still are in with a shout of winning the game. Only Blackwell and Durston really got in and made any decent contribution to the Somerset score as they both made scores in the 40's but it was that man Matthew Hoggard who yet again was in the wickets this time taking 4 for 48 to add to his 5 wicket haul in the first innings, showing how important he is to this Yorkshire team.

From Briggs View
Briggs was yet again in with the wickets in the Somerset second innings, this time taking 3 Somerset wickets to add to his 2 in the first innings. Despite taking the 3 wickets, Briggs still went at 4 an over, just like in the first innings but there was more pace and more venom in this second innings effort as his pace proved too much especially for Trescothick and Blackwell who were both bowled by Briggs. Michael Burns was also a Briggs victim in the second innings and has now been dismissed by Briggs 3 times in 4 innings against him not including the dismissal of him in the Totesport League game.

Shaun Briggs 10-1-41-3
1st Spell
1st Over: WICKET! What a bowling change from White! Briggs strikes immediately with his second delivery, clean bowling Trescothick
2nd Over: 2 runs picked up from the over
3rd Over: WICKET! Briggs does it again, this time dismissing Burns who hooks one straight to White who takes an amazing diving catch
4th Over: Graeme Smith decides its time to attack and smashes Briggs away for 3 boundaries in the over
End Of Spell 4-0-19-2
2nd Spell
5th Over: WICKET! Blackwell thinks he has the better of Briggs by hitting him away for 4, but next ball Briggs replies by bowling him brilliantly
6th Over: Durston plays and misses at a good one. Maiden over
7th Over: Briggs bowls a no ball, his first of the innings
8th Over: Very eventfull over as Johnson twice edges through slip and both go away for 4
9th Over: Briggs bowls his second no ball of the innings
10th Over: Another no ball from Briggs in what would be his final over

Note: For some reason the game went back in time after day 2 and once play ended and started again, it started on day 2 again so it will resume on day 3 for the chase!?

Somerset Scrape Home In Amazing Game!
At Taunton

In what turned out to be a thrilling second innings chase from Yorkshire, Somerset managed to win a fantastic game by the small margin of 31 runs on the final day at Taunton. A last wicket stand of 62 between Richard Dawson and Deon Kruis was so close to taking Yorkshire home, despite at one stage being 161 for 7, Yorkshire were bowled out for 306 after some spirited and gritty batting by the tail, in particular Richard Dawson who top scored for Yorkshire with 61. Somerset will have been relieved to have won a game they should have wrapped up on day 3 after getting Yorkshire 7 down but their bowlers just did not fire. Richard Johnson took 5 for 88 in the innings but it was Andy Caddick who took the winning wicket, much to the relief of the players and the Somerset faithful in the ground who were treated to a fine game and were the first set of fans to see Yorkshire beaten in the County Championship this season.

From Briggs View
When Briggs came in, Yorkshire were in trouble and 2 down for only 54. A patient innings from Briggs saw him take 71 deliveries for only 27 runs, which was the story of the Yorkshire innings as most players got in and made a start, but none could go on and really hammer in a decent score in the top order. Despite being under pressure, Briggs still managed to score nicely in his 27 and played some nice deliveries away to the boundary, but he was eventually out LBW to his early season weakness, playing across the line to a Johnson delivery.
