Somerset Crack As Yorkshire Claim Victory
At Taunton

Yorkshire's bowlers performed brilliantly at Taunton to dismiss Somerset for only 139 and to take the game by 70 runs. Deon Kruis was the Yorkshire hero, taking 4 wickets in his 9 over spell which resulted in him being not only bowled through, but also in him gaining a very well deserved man of the match award. Somerset never really got out of the blocks after a bright start by openers Smith and Trescothick, but when Kruis started giving it that extra effort, the wickets came and a hat-trick was only denied to the fast bowler when an LBW shout was turned down. To acompany Kruis' 4 wickets, their were also wickets for Dawson, Briggs and captain Craig White while Keith Parsons top scored for Somerset with 31.

From Briggs View
Shaun Briggs produced a firery 5 over spell to acompany Deon Kruis' fine bowling. Briggs caused problems throughout especially for Trescothick who seemed to find Briggs pace difficult which was enough to rough him up for Kruis. Briggs himself picked up 2 wickets from his short spell and yet again put in a fine all round performance.

Shaun Briggs 5-1-9-2
1st Over: Briggs starts up with a fine maiden over
2nd Over: Agony for Briggs as South African captain Graeme Smith is dropped by Harvey in the covers
3rd Over: 2 singles from the over
4th Over: Just a single picked up from the over
5th Over: WICKETS! Briggs strikes gold as he produces a fine over to claim the wickets of Smith and then Turner. First to go was Smith who played all around one from Briggs only to turn around and see the bails dislodged. Next ball Turner hammers Briggs away for 4 but Briggs replies brilliantly to claim his wicket the very next ball as Kruis takes a fine catch

So, another fine game for Briggs as it turned out his top score in the Yorkshire innings helped to give Yorkshire that important victory. His fine spell of bowling also accompanied Deon Kruis' opening spell brilliantly and really went far to give Yorkshire a fine victory and to get one back at Somerset for inflicting their first championship defeat in the mid-week.

Its Roses Time Again!

yorksvslancscopy6co.jpg

The time has come again for the second installment of the Roses battle as Yorkshire make the trip across the pennines to take on their rivals Lancashire in the County Championship. Both teams have had excellent starts to the season and a win in the upcoming game would be a huge boost to their credidentials as promotion favourites. The first game between these two at Headingly led to a steam-roll victory for Yorkshire by the huge margin of 290 runs, thanks in part to an amazing all round performance by youngster Shaun Briggs, who out shone England's very own all-rounder in Andrew Flintoff. Both guys took time out of their busy schedules to have a sit down this week with Al Kaholic and answer some questions on this second encounter.

AK: Hi guys, nice to see you two here today

AF: No problem mate, its nice to be here, only just managed it though after last night! (laughs)

AK: I bet! Well I'll start of with you Shaun, now you havent been known to speak to the press much, being a bit of the quiet one in the circuit, but you have been compared in many ways to Andrew, how does this make you feel?

SB: Its always nice to be compared to someone as prolific as Freddie, he is a top class player and will be for years to come, but as far as cricket is concerned we are two different players, we may be both all rounders but thats where it stops for me, we play our games the way we want too and thats fine for me

AK: And Andrew, how does it feel to have someone as young as Briggs coming up looking set to be the new you, if you will

AF: Its great, you know for cricket, especially English cricket if we have someone with the talent as this bloke has coming up and looking to take my place then yeah its great but like Shaun said, we are two different players and hopefully we will get a chance to show you that on Thursday when the match starts

AK: Coming on to the Roses match, obviously its a huge encounter for both teams, and with Yorkshire winning the game last time out on home turf by a huge margin, will they have the upperhand going into this one?

SB: Cricket is a funny game, one day you can be unbeatable and do nothing wrong, but the next day it could go all against you and you could be staring into defeat. 4 days is a long time and anything could happen, but as far as us having the upperhand, I would say no, as Roses encounters bring out the best in both sets of players and I would expect a close battle even if one of us were at the top and the other at the bottom of the table

AF: Yeah I would definately agree on that, Ive played in many Roses matches and they do bring out the best in you, the game earlier this season was obviously a blow for us losing by that big a margin, but we've progressed and gained some momentum going into this game and with Yorkshire having lost their last County Championship game to Somerset, id say we have a bit of momentum over them coming into it, but its going to be great.

AK: So, who's going to win?

AF: (laughs) Oh you can't ask us that!

SB: Yorkshire (laughs)

AF: Oh ill get a big mauling from the lads now for not saying Lancashire! but yeah id go with us because we are on home territory and you saw what that did for Yorkshire at Headingly, but whatever the outcome its going to be a great game and Shaun will definately be getting the rounds in afterwards (laughs)

SB: Hey, I thought only the loser was going to be getting the rounds!

AF: My point exactly!

Both men laugh and shake hands as the interview comes to an end

So stay tuned for the latest Roses encounter of the season!

Lancashire vs Yorkshire
Old Trafford

The time has come yet again for these two rivals to lock horns as Yorkshire make the trip across the pennines to take on their roses rivals in Lancashire at Old Trafford. After Yorkshire's huge victory at Headingly earlier in the season, Lancashire will be looking for some payback and with Yorkshire having lost their first game of the season in the county championship at Taunton a couple of weeks ago, Lancashire may come into the game with renewed hope of getting the victory. The two captains checked out the conditions before taking the coin toss.

So, the overnight rain has obviously left its mark with the pitch being quite damp, which could be useful for the bowlers, especially later in the game if the pitch deteriates. The coin toss was soon taken.

Craig White yet again sticks his head out as he wins the toss and elects to bat, just like in the last game against Somerset, but obviously we all know what happened their and White will obviously be hoping his team performs a lot better this time. The teams were then announced and the players made their way out onto the field to begin the game.

Injured Flintoff Misses Roses
At Old Trafford

Andrew Flintoff checks his toe in practice before the Roses game

Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff missed out on the Roses game on the morning of the Roses after a freak accident just 20 minutes before play was due to begin. As both teams warmed up on the pitch, Lancashire decided to throw a rugby ball around and as Flintoff was going back to catch a high kick, he stepped on a cricket ball that someone had left and fell to the ground immediately. He was then helped off the pitch and it was confirmed he would not be risked with the Ashes coming up. A Lancashire spokesman said "Andrew is a vital part of both this team and the England team, but both ourselves and Yorkshire were given instructions prior to the game that if any England player participating picked up a slight knock before the game, then they were not to be played and we made sure we complied with this".

Sajid Mahmood was called up as replacement for Flintoff who was stated to be 'devestated' to have missed out on one of the biggest games of the season. He will go for a scan later today but the Lancashire physio did not think it would be too serious.

Lancashire Fight Back After Jaques Dominates
At Old Trafford

A century from Phil Jaques put Yorkshire in control of the second Roses clash of the season, despite some late fightback from the Lancashire bowlers. On a pitch which is offering very little bounce and some spin, batting was always bound to be difficult, but after Wood fell early, Jaques and Vaughan put on 171 for the second wicket before Vaughan fell for 99. Once Vaughan fell, the Yorkshire innings went downhill as they lost there last 8 wickets for only 140 runs after a spirited fightback by Lancashire, led in part by Kyle Hogg's 4 wickets. Yorkshire were eventually bowled out for 392 which considering the conditions, is a very good score and Lancashire are going to have to bat very well on a deteriating pitch to stay in the game.

From Briggs View
In what proved to be a short stay at the crease, Briggs scored 18 from the same amount of balls in difficult conditions. With the ball staying low and hardly and pace coming from the pitch, Briggs struggled to get to grips with the pitch and despite hitting some fine boundaries early on, he was dismissed by Kyle Hogg to a ball which Briggs mis-judged and trapped him plum infront.
