Yorkshire Ease Home In Style
At Headingly

Yorkshire completed a comfortable 9 wicket victory over Derbyshire in this Totesport League encounter at Headingly. An unbeaten 70 from Australian Phil Jaques along with a solid 58 from England captain Michael Vaughan guided Yorkshire to their target of 159 with over 16 overs left to spare. After a blistering start from openers Jaques and Briggs which saw a flourish of boundaries, Briggs was run out after a poor call which saw him well short of the crease after a direct hit from Di Venuto standing at mid off. That left Yorkshire at 38 for 1 and Derbyshire with some hope, but the partnership between Jaques and Vaughan worth 121 won the game for the Phoenix as Derbyshire's hopes of promotion look to have gone after this defeat.

From Briggs View
After getting Yorkshire off to a blistering start, Briggs would have been anoyed with himself after virtually running himself out on a pitch which was proven to be a brilliant batting strip. Before getting himself out though, Briggs smashed a 4 and a 6 from Tom Lungley who took a battering all game. But, Briggs will have been thankful that the run out was not more costly for Yorkshire as they eased home for victory.

Stats For Shaun Briggs After Game Fourteen

Briggs is steadily showing his worth in the shorter version of the game, especially with the ball as he continues to pick up wickets. His batting has improved as the season has gone on and it can be safely said that after his promotion to opener, Briggs has been a lot better and it seems to suit him more.

Briggs hopes for A-Team call up

In a rare interview with a local Yorkshire newspaper, Yorkshire all-rounder spoke of his desire to be called up to the England A team for the coming tour to the West Indies. The tour, due to start on the 14th of October when England will arrive, see's the A-team take on a West Indies A team in 2 test matches and 3 one day internationals.

In the interview, Briggs said: "Obviously this has been only my first season for Yorkshire and I am not expecting anything special to happen straight away as far as a national team call up is concerned, but my aim now is to end the season strong so I can boost my chances of a call up to the national academy and maybe then get the call for England A, it would be a dream come true."

Briggs, who is averaging over 57 with the bat and has taken 59 wickets in the county championship this season has helped Yorkshire to the top of both the Totesport League and County Championship as they look to be promoted in both forms of the game and his captain Craig White suggested the selectors would be stupid to over look Briggs.

Craig White: "Briggs should be selected"

"Obviously he (Briggs) has the talent and if I were a selector I would not hesitate in selecting him. He's been outstanding for us this season to say its his debut season and I hope for England's sake he is selected."

The A squad will be announced before Yorkshire's game against Derbyshire in the County Championship on the 16th September
